(RE) creating a theatre of myth : pedagogy and cultural heritage in a theatre for Cypriot youth

Polycarpou, Charis January 2002 (has links)
This thesis will argue that the contemporary educational system of Cyprus denies young people opportunities to participate in the creation of their culture, which can provide the nest for the exploration and understanding of their individual and collective lives. Culture, in schools, is treated not as a dynamic process in which the young people can play the main role but instead as a static field of knowledge that should be studied and learnt. This approach, however, contradicts the same principles that were the foundations of the ancient culture that the young Greeks have inherited from the past whose performative and participatory nature ascribed to it a proactive and democratic public life that guaranteed everyone the right to speak and act. This thesis argues that the Greek young people of contemporary Cyprus should be entitled to participation in recreating and reconstructing the meanings and values of those stories that have inherited from the past and that bind them together as one people in ways that help them make sense of their contemporary private and public roles. The thesis argues that the myths of the past should be reinterpreted and repositioned again in the present to respond to the immediate social context of the young people in a participatory and democratic way so as to enable a progress of this culture and a connection between the past, the present and the future. The thesis shows that culture is under continuous reconstruction taking on the example of fifth century BC Athens where theatre and public life fed one another and developed to respond to the current socio-historical context of the time. Throughout, the thesis shows in what ways theatre can provide the means for the investigation of the inherent meanings in the myths of the past and also its significance in playing the role of the social agent that can enable transformation and progress. The thesis consists of an introduction, eight chapters and a conclusion. In the Introduction I identify the problem that exists in the contemporary educational system of Cyprus concerning the way that the field of culture is approached and present the conceptual framework that provides the foundation for proposing a new Theatre of Myth. Chapter one provides a critical reflection on and analysis of the oral culture of Homer to the democratic fifth century BC Athens and the birth of tragedy. Chapter two studies, both from the ideal and the material aspect, the social role of the Athenian tragic theatre and its polis during the fifth century. Chapter three seeks to base the arguments made in the thesis of the educational and political role of the fifth century theatre through a critical analysis of its form and content. Chapter four identifies and supports the principles of the proposed Theatre of Myth, drawing from the twentieth century developments in Modem Drama whilst chapter five shows how the Drama-in-Education tradition attempts to bridge the practices in the Modem Drama paradigm to come closer to the proposed theatre model. Chapter six provides the methodology followed for a pilot case study that attempts to transfer the Theatre of Myth into practice, which is the preoccupation of chapter seven. Chapter eight discusses and analyses the findings of the case study to inform the theoretical lines of the model of the Theatre of Myth. Some conclusions are discussed concerning the potential and the limitations of the Theatre of Myth in the end of the thesis.

A comparison of grade 11 learners' and pre-service teachers' understandings of nature of science

Musekiwa, Kizito January 2017 (has links)
A research project report submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the MSc in Science Education. Johannesburg, February 2017. / An understanding of the NOS is a basis for scientific literacy which is one of the major goals of science education the world over. This study compared Grade 11 High school learners (n=10) and third year Bachelor of Education, Pre-service teachers’ (n=10) understandings of Nature of Science (NOS). Data on participants’ understandings of NOS was collected by means of a Likert type questionnaire and through semi - structured interviews. Likert type questionnaire data was quantitatively analysed using a combination of descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U test and graphical comparison of group median scores on questionnaire items to ascertain differences in NOS understandings between the Grade 11 learners and the B.Ed. Pre-service teachers. Semi-structured interview data was analysed through a combination of typological and interpretative analysis of interview transcripts to determine differences in NOS understandings between the two groups. The findings reveal that there are no significant differences in the understandings of the NOS between the Grade 11 learners and third year, Bachelor of Education, Pre-service teachers. The analyses reveal that overall; the Grade 11 Learners and third year B.Ed. Pre-service teachers’ understandings of NOS are not very different from each other. Both groups held such misunderstandings as; there is a single scientific method, scientific knowledge is not socially and culturally embedded, scientific knowledge is universal and can be proven through collection of empirical data. It is recommended that if the goal of science education for scientific literacy is to be achieved, initial teacher education training should do more to explicitly develop Pre-service teachers’ subject matter knowledge understandings, pedagogical skills and valuing of NOS, that is, their pedagogical content knowledge for nature of science. Explicit testing of learners’ NOS understandings is also suggested as a way of improving the school Physical Science curriculum. The effectiveness of the current science content and methods courses in improving the Pre-service teachers’ NOS understandings is questioned. Recommendations for further studies are suggested. / MT2017

At the bank of paradise: and other stories

Unknown Date (has links)
From modern-day parking lot snipers to 18th century Romantic picturesque painters, At the Bank of Paradise: and Other Stories explores the unexpected boundaries of the Caribbean, following those who have come, those who have stayed, and those who have left the Caribbean behind. Inspired by real historical figures at the periphery of the Caribbean experience, these stories dive into untold narratives only glimpsed in the footnotes of history. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Moreira, Alex. January 2018 (has links)
For this, we will support us on the theories that start from the studies on modernity and identity developed by authors like Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens, Stuart Hall, among others. In our understanding, these authors observe that today's societies are living a process of radicalization of modernity that triggers profound economic, political, cultural and social transformations. Based on these analyses, we try to understand how the transformations arising from the modernization process interfere in the configuration of the constructed identities, having the world of crime as one of its axiological references, allowing the subjects to assume the criminal identity as their social identity, supported in the organization of criminal activities, whose sophistication can be observed in the performance of the criminal factions in the great Brazilian urban centres. After the discussion about modernity and its transformations, the thesis will set the following course: first, we will make a historical biographical rescue of bandits with trajectories of prominence in the national scene. Such rescue will be done through archives of the press about these subjects and biographical and/or autobiographical works that have as a plot the action of these criminals so that, from this material, we analyse the individual trajectories...

January 2012 (has links)
Our purpose is to investigate cultural journalism - understood as an instance of propagation and dedication that operates on the gears of consenso's creation about the value of culture and art -, as we're intrigued by the appearance of a new editorial product which birth proposes the rescue of a legendary journal - Suplemento Literário - in a scene apparently unfavorable to publications of its form. Therefore, we divide our research in two: theoretical discussion an objects' analysis. We begin this work by approaching the historical development of the meanings of culture and its constitution as an independent field. We discourse about the mechanisms of value production of a work of art, and about the formation, structure and operation of the market of symbolic goods, and also about questions related to the cultural sphere in the context of Postmodernity. Next, we connect the journalistic practice observed in the literacy supplement Sabático with the cultural field's configuration processes, in a way to compose a series of concepts, practices and dilemmas about the cultural journalism, in order to justify the analysis' purpose of this essay / Mestre

January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The approach to the myths of modernity is a very comprehensive theme in Literary Studies. Fausto, Don Juan and Don Quixote are just a few examples of characters who become literature's representations of modern individuality. Over the centuries, a lot of variations of these myths illustrated the works of several writers, one of the reasons that enabled the spread of these figures. So we find in French literature, specifically the work of Honoré de Balzac, issues related not only to social but also to the individual, the man's nature. This way, the character Don Juan Belvidero, the story "L'Elixir de longue vie", becomes one of the most satanic variations of the myth of Don Juan, since the selfish and ambitious caracter's behavior motivate his fall . Valentin Raphaël, protagonist of La peau de chagrin, can be then the representation of Fausto, who allied with Mephistopheles in exchange for power. However, Raphael is just a guy who haven't anything in life and gets the chance to own everything he ever desired, using a magic talisman, and the only disadvantage is to give his life in exchanged. We will analyze these two narratives to verify the construction of these characters, both founded in the myth of Fausto and Don Juan and for this it's necessary to rescue some variations of these figures in literary history to this work. Discoursing about these modern themes in Balzac's work is important from the critical fortune developed by Ernest Curtius, Pierre Brunel and other researchers of the Balzac's liteture, to go deep in our work and to develop the themes related to religion, modernity and power relations. Later, wil be necessary to analyze the narratives by their spatial and narratological features, with the help of Michel Foucault and Gérard Genette, so we can also understand if the magical objects appereance in narratives are related to the introduction of modern myths. The Theoretical Ian Watt, Jean Rousset, Pierre Brunel and... / Doutor
