Communal identity and historical claims to land in South Africa : the cases of the Clarkson Moravian Mission and the Tsitsikamma Mfengu

Jannecke, Crystal January 2005 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 312-342). / In this thesis we examine the case of the Clarkson Mission and Tsitsikamma Mfengu communities on the Southern Cape Coast of South Africa, and highlight some of the ambiguities prevalent in their contested claims of entitlement to the Clarkson mission land. Their respective notions of communal identity are investigated, and the ways in which these are historically linked to land entitlement are examined. The analyses of the constructed communal identities of the "coloured" Clarksoner and the "native" Mfengu are located within the critical analytical approach of discourse theory, an important component of which is a socio-historical analysis. Primary data were obtained through archival, documentary, comprehensive Deeds Registry research, as well as fieldwork and in-depth interviews. Central themes in this study are colonial land dispossessions, the use of forced indigenous labour, resistance, rebellion and collaboration. The study shows that aspects of "coloured", "native", "tribal", "ancestral", Mfengu, and Moravian, used in contemporary communal identity formations are not fixed givens, but rather historical discursive constructions that are in a process of constant change. In the case of the Clarksoners we show how the Moravian historical narrative together with the Moravian Ethic had been transplanted and imposed by the early Moravian missionaries at the Cape and how these have over time come to be taken-for-granted and appropriated by members of Moravian Church, and Clarksoners in particular. We trace the origin of the Moravian narrative and show the similarities, differences, and continuity at both Genadendal in the Southern Cape and Clarkson. In the case of the Tsitsikamma Mfengu we show how the emerging colonial "Fingo" narrative and constructed colonial "Fingo" identity are firmly connected to land dispossession and forced labour in the aftermath of the 1835 Eastern Cape frontier war. We show how elements of both the "Fingo" narrative and constructed identity were appropriated and re-ordered in contemporary processes of Tsitsikamma Mfengu community identification. The study endeavours to make visible the dynamic changing history and relations of power and domination surrounding processes of communal identification that are connected to historical rights in land.

La información que presentan los claims nutricionales de las etiquetas de leche evaporada en relación a la intención de compra por parte de las madres de familia de entre 25 a 40 años de edad pertenecientes al nivel socioeconómico c en lima metropolitana

Salas Zorrilla, Javier Alonso 27 November 2019 (has links)
The objective of this research is the analysis of nutritional claims in evaporated milk packaging. Currently, the consumer is increasingly informed by what is more demanding with the products you consume. It is essential for brands to offer their consumers the necessary information about the products they consume and that this be true. There have been cases in the Peruvian dairy market in which brands have misused nutritional claims and have been heavily sanctioned. Nutrition claims have as main task to inform the consumer and its good use can influence the purchase decision. There are two types of nutritional claims: absolute content nutritional claims and nutritional health claims, both fulfill very similar roles with the difference that health claims provide information on the benefits, dangers and nutritional values of the product while the content of its composition. The public chosen for the development of this research has been mothers of families aged between 35 and 40 belonging to socioeconomic level C, since these are usually the decision makers of household products, especially those that have to do with the nutrition and health of the children. It was possible to have access to interact with the target audience and with specialists of the dairy market, making a contrast of the information obtained by both sides. / Trabajo de investigación

A Comparison of Two Methods of Medication Reconciliation

McCulloch, Matthew, Baumgart, Alysson January 2008 (has links)
Class of 2008 Abstract / Objectives: To compare the completeness of patient medication history collected upon admission at the University Medical Center (UMC) in Tucson, Arizona with that collected by RxAccordTM insurance claims database. Methods: An inferential retrospective chart review. A random list of 300 patients admitted to UMC from January 1, 2007 to June 30, 2007 who utilized specific insurance companies was obtained. Of those 300 patients, the first 100 patients found in the RxAccordTM database were included in this study. UMC recorded admission medication history was noted for each patient and compared against the RxAccordTM retail pharmacy adjudicated medication database. The main outcome measured was the number of medication discrepancies. The independent variable was the type of medication reconciliation conducted (RxAccordTM ) vs. physician compiled upon admission to UMC. Results: A total of ninety-five charts were used in this study. UMC admission medication reconciliation records had an average of 2.21 missing medications per patient whereas RxAccordTM had an average of 1.01 missing medications per patient. Of the medications missing on the RxAccordTM database, almost 50% (46/96) were OTC medications. On average, UMC had fifty-one medications that had discrepancies (i.e. route, strength or directions). On the other hand, RxAccordTM contained no discrepancies. A total of 17 out 95 records (18%) were missing medication reconciliation forms in their medical record. Conclusions: Information collected by RxAccordTM produced a more complete patient medication reconciliation history than that compiled upon admission at UMC. An insurance claims database may provide, a significantly more accurate method of medication reconciliation.

Leading Through Diversity: The Effect Of Leader Gender On Racial Discrimination Claims

January 2015 (has links)
The present research investigated the role that a leader’s gender plays in influencing Black Americans’ discrimination-claiming attitudes and behaviors. Using cross-sectional (Study 1) and experimental (Study 2 & Study 3) methods, these studies test a mediational model predicting that Blacks will have more positive discrimination-claiming outcomes when they have a White female leader than White male leader because targets will perceive the female leaders as less racially prejudiced than male leaders. Results from Study 1 revealed that Black employees viewed their female supervisors as less prejudiced towards Blacks than they viewed their male supervisors. Furthermore, Study 1 demonstrated that the less prejudiced that Blacks perceived their supervisors to be, the better discrimination-claiming outcomes they had. However, there was no evidence that perceived leader prejudice mediated the effect of leader gender on discrimination-claiming outcomes. These findings did not replicate in Study 2 where Black participants were randomly assigned to imagine they had a White female or male leader. Specifically, participants viewed the White male and female leader as equally prejudiced and had the same predicted claiming outcomes when imagining claiming discrimination to a White male vs. female leader. Study 3, in which Black participants took part in an organizational simulation with either a White female or male leader, replicated Study 1 in that female leaders were perceived as lower in prejudice than male leaders. Furthermore, Study 3 revealed preliminary evidence that perceived prejudice may mediate the effect of leader gender on perceived costs associated with claiming discrimination. Implications for how leaders can encourage targets to report discrimination, as well as a potential “leadership advantage” for female leaders are discussed. / 1 / Stefanie L Simon
