Geometry of numbers, class group statistics and free path lengths

Holmin, Samuel January 2015 (has links)
This thesis contains four papers, where the first two are in the area of geometry of numbers, the third is about class group statistics and the fourth is about free path lengths. A general theme throughout the thesis is lattice points and convex bodies. In Paper A we give an asymptotic expression for the number of integer matrices with primitive row vectors and a given nonzero determinant, such that the Euclidean matrix norm is less than a given large number. We also investigate the density of matrices with primitive rows in the space of matrices with a given determinant, and determine its asymptotics for large determinants. In Paper B we prove a sharp bound for the remainder term of the number of lattice points inside a ball, when averaging over a compact set of (not necessarily unimodular) lattices, in dimensions two and three. We also prove that such a bound cannot hold if one averages over the space of all lattices. In Paper C, we give a conjectural asymptotic formula for the number of imaginary quadratic fields with class number h, for any odd h, and a conjectural asymptotic formula for the number of imaginary quadratic fields with class group isomorphic to G, for any finite abelian p-group G where p is an odd prime. In support of our conjectures we have computed these quantities, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis and with the aid of a supercomputer, for all odd h up to a million and all abelian p-groups of order up to a million, thus producing a large list of “missing class groups.” The numerical evidence matches quite well with our conjectures. In Paper D, we consider the distribution of free path lengths, or the distance between consecutive bounces of random particles in a rectangular box. If each particle travels a distance R, then, as R → ∞ the free path lengths coincides with the distribution of the length of the intersection of a random line with the box (for a natural ensemble of random lines) and we determine the mean value of the path lengths. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the probability density function in dimension two and three. In dimension two we also consider a closely related model where each particle is allowed to bounce N times, as N → ∞, and give an explicit formula for its probability density function. / <p>QC 20151204</p>

Negotiating the Middle: Interactions of Class, Gender and Consumerism Among the Middle-Class in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

Higgins, Rylan G. January 2008 (has links)
This urban ethnography examines the everyday lives of young adults participating in middle-class culture in Ho Chi Minh City. My analysis illuminates the motivations and processes by which middle-class people create a social and moral middleness. Middleness refers both to the experiences of this group and to the cultural space wherein individuals perform their gender-specific, consumption-driven roles and negotiate identities as modern Vietnamese people. In attempting to understand precisely how social class functions and is experienced, my analysis focuses on how it relates to other processes of identity formation (i.e. gender and consumerism). Doing so also requires that I call attention to the uneven, unstable impacts of globalizing processes and the importance of performativity. By arguing that class is best understood as a socio-cultural process and by confronting the myth of global cultural homogenization, I reveal important insights about what it means to be middle-class in Ho Chi Minh City. Individual and group responses to the city's ever-changing consumer society show people carrying out their lives in social and cultural systems that are fundamentally unfinished.

A collection of stories from the ground up

Unknown Date (has links)
The stories proposed within this thesis examine the daily lives of working class men, women, and children and the subtle dynamics of the relationships between them. The stories engage a variety of narrative perspectives, sometimes employing serious overtones and sometimes shifting toward humor. Stylistically, the stories construct a single unified voice that sifts through common themes including alcoholism, self-pity, the loss of culture, grief, distrust, absolution, and hero worship. / by Dustin Clark. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. The ordinary middle class in an ordinary community: the formation of the new middle class in China. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2009 (has links)
Based on an ethnographic study of a middle class community in Beijing, this research attempts to investigate the formation of a specific segment of China's middle class, namely, the white-collar employees and the new generation of private entrepreneurs in urban China. It will demonstrate how this segment of China's middle class deliberately differentiate themselves from other social groups through symbolized everyday domestic practices, and capture the latest development of domestic lifestyles of China's middle class. / The economic reform in contemporary China has brought about transformations in its socio-economic and political environment. The implementation of a series of policies that changed the occupational structure, reinvented resources allocation mode, and increased the purchasing power of China's urban citizens has facilitated the emergence of a new social stratum. As this new middle stratum is still emerging and expanding, its composition is pluralistic. To describe the emerging affluent social classes, simply looking at economic indicators may not be adequate. Lifestyle factors have become important components in the shaping of China's new middle class. / Using Bourdieu's theoretical schema, three inter-related analytical questions regarding to domestic life patterns of China's middle class will be addressed in this research: their aspirations of home, how this expected domestic life is protected through collective actions, and how a local system or a moral order of behavior is gradually formed through mundane and ordinary everyday interactions. A legally recognized and protected homeownership has become the bottom line, upon which the middle class continue to develop higher requirements to live comfortably and safely at home. From these everyday practices in the field of domestic life, we shall see how the emerging middle class in China is establishing a lifestyle, forming a shared social identity, and constructing social space in the social structure. / Liu, Shuo. / Adviser: Lui Tai Lok. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 72-10, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2009. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 187-196). / Electronic reproduction. A Study of Class Normalization

Chiu, Jui-Yuan 04 July 2005 (has links)
Class normalization is a process that can be used to organize the structure of object schema to increase the cohesion of classes while minimizing the coupling between them. This research proposes a method to apply the rule of class normalization to class modeling during the object-oriented systems analysis and design process. A real-world case is presented to illustrate the concepts, application, and the advantages of using the proposed method. Utilizing this method in class modeling can help the system developer ensure the class diagram in third object normal form and thereby enhance the effectiveness of system development.

Ching-tsai, Wong 09 February 2006 (has links)
This research aims at studying the relationship between the satisfaction on class cluster classroom reflected by teachers in elementary school and its management performance, the main purposes include: 1. To further investigation and study on the basic concept and related theories of class cluster classroom design with open space. 2. To understand the current status of class cluster classroom in Kao-ping area which adopts open space design and the class management performance run by teachers on the class cluster classroom which adopts open space design. 3. To study and analysis on the differences of the satisfaction and the class management performance of class cluster classroom, which adopts open space, reflected by teachers of different background variables. 4. To investigate the relationship and forecasting between the cluster classroom satisfaction and the class management performance reflected by teachers in the elementary school. 5. Suggestions will be proposed based on the study results so as to be used by teachers who practically operate and apply class cluster classroom of open space and by persons who are going to perform planning on school building of open space in the elementary school. ¡§Questionnaire survey¡¨ will be the main method used in this study, the sampled targets will be from all the teachers, who adopt open space in designing class cluster classroom, in the schools of Kaohsiung City, Kaohsiung County and Pingtung County; the number questionnaires are about 356 copies and a total of 310 effective questionnaires are recycled. The research tool in this study is self-developed ¡§A questionnaire on the relationship between class cluster classroom with open space design and the class management performance¡¨, statistical methods used include: descriptive statistical analysis, independent sample t test, single factor ANOVA (analysis on variance), Pearson product-moment correlation, stepwise multiple regression analysis, etc. The following conclusions are derived based on the results of this study: 1. Teachers have above-average evaluation on class cluster classroom with open space design. 2. Class cluster teachers in elementary schools have higher class management performance. 3. For teachers in Kaohisung city, teachers with part-time administrative duties, teachers in L shape class cluster module or teachers with 2 years (included) or below of teaching experiences in this school show higher satisfaction on the class cluster classroom adopting open space design. 4. For teachers in schools of Kaohsiung city, in schools of L shape and ¡§Arc¡¨ shape class cluster modules, all show better class management performance. 5. Class cluster classrooms adopting open space design is helpful in improving class management performance. 6. Among all background variables such as teacher¡¦s background, class cluster classroom adopting open space design, etc., ¡§city of school served¡¨ and ¡§accessory equipment and space¡¨ have the highest forecasting power on the class management performance of teachers. The researcher of this study would like to propose the following suggestions based on the findings and conclusions of this study: 1. To improve school space to drive the core engine of educational reform. 2. To need government¡¦s policy support to activate space function of campus. 3. To let the users to participate so as to inspire the idea of like-to-teach and like-to-learn. 4. To build appropriate space to inspire innovative momentum of teachers. 5. To take good use of space resource to realize class management synergy. 6. To continue research and evaluation and continue the dialogue between people and space. 7. Future research study: to include suggestions on research aims, tools and methods.
