EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL BURNOUT AND THE BEHAVIORAL WELL-BEING OF SOCIAL WORKERS

Pisapia, Damian A 01 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between occupational burnout and the behavioral well-being of social workers. Burnout is a multidimensional syndrome where workers experience feelings of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment as a consequence of work related stress and overwhelming job demands. Burnout can negatively affect organizational functioning, work performance, and pose significant health risks to workers. There are a limited number of studies focusing on the impact of occupational burnout on the behavioral well-being of workers. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant relationship between burnout and behavioral well-being. Emotional exhaustion was found to negatively impact exercise frequency, which was consistent with previous study findings. Depersonalization was positively correlated to the number of hours of sleep and the frequency of self-care activities participants engaged in. The effects of depersonalization on sleep and self-care activities suggest that workers may engage in these activities as a way to cope with feelings of depersonalization on the job.

Substance Abuse Among the Elderly: What Works in Treatment

Morelli, Sophia 01 June 2015 (has links)
Social workers are trained during the course of their education to work with the elderly and to understand the various dynamics of aging. These professionals also receive education on substance abuse and how to assess clients as well as link them to appropriate supportive services. How can social workers be more inclined to effectively treat the elderly substance abuser? What are, if any, special considerations a social worker should be aware of when working with the geriatric population? What treatment modalities seem to be more effective with the elderly client? This study utilized a qualitative analysis consisting of interviews with eight clinicians who specialize in the area of addiction treatment amongst the aging population. The purpose of this study was to gain insight and knowledge that can be used to promote social worker awareness of elderly substance abuse as well as the identification of effective addiction treatment methods in the field of gerontological social work. The findings of this study will impact future social work practice, policy and research in the areas of education, treatment, and advocacy for the aging and substance abuse populations. Keywords: gerontology, substance abuse, aging, polypharmacy, interventions

The assessment of caregiver burden among participants in the Home-Based Primary Care program

Kaney, Dennis 01 January 2000 (has links)
With the increase in the elderly, American's caregiver roles and responsibilities are also on the rise. Developing with this increase is the growing problem of caregiver burden. The Loma Linda V. A. Hospital has developed a service known as the Home-Based Primary Care program designed to combat caregiver burden. Studies were conducted among caregiver participants in this program in an effort to evaluate overall levels of burden and the program's efficiency at meeting caregiver needs. Overall this program provides a useful model for future programs aimed at reducing caregiver burden. Limitations that can be improved, however, include consistency in scheduling, reliable staffing, and continuity in care.
