A relação terapêutica frente a homossexualidade / The therapeutic relationship in relation to the homosexuality

Kniest, Gustavo Rihl 31 March 2005 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-06-01T18:08:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Gustavo Rihl.pdf: 1161766 bytes, checksum: 434112402fce63218fe8a48e6005343f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-03-31 / It is intended through this research to understand how the clinic psychologist interacts with the homosexuality brought by clients during the therapeutic process. The homosexuality, which until recently was considered as a disease or a behavioral deviation, is gaining special attention from the Psychology professionals not only because its incidence is rising among adolescents, but also because under the contemporary cultural configurations it is a phenomenon that needs to be revaluated. Taking the homosexuality historical and cultural evolution as reference - including some of its theoretical approaches - and also reviewing the authors that studied the establishment and development of Psychology as science and profession, it was possible to draw a map allowing us to come closer to the psychologist s proceeding, his/her role, his/her difficulties and contributions, and the influence of culture upon the therapist s practice. Also, taking the phenomenological method as theoretical reference, and performing individual interviews, a qualitative research was developed, aiming to unveil the experience and resonance of therapists working with clients that face homosexual issues. Reports full of reflections and contributions lead to a surprising picture: under solving/curative demands, along with psychological theories openly biased to pathological concepts, therapists relate a clinical intervention directed to a perception of man as an entire being, allowing them a critical theoretical and social attitude regarding this growing occurrence in their offices. On the other hand, therapists reveal an unassisted theoretic/professional position when dealing with this issue and with the family/social background of their clients. On calling attention to this situation we hope to contribute to the need of further reflection and also to offer a point of view that set in motion a critical thinking regarding this matter, and to find the place of the psychologist as a professional exploring this panorama / Buscou-se, através deste trabalho de pesquisa, compreender como o psicólogo clínico interage com a homossexualidade trazida pelo seu cliente no processo terapêutico.

Effects of Note-Taking on Self-Disclosure Among Prisoners

Lowrey, Kimberly D. (Kimberly Dawn) 12 1900 (has links)
The effects of note-taking on self-disclosure during a clinical interview among prisoners were investigated. Participants consisted of 60 male and female inmates incarcerated in a minimum security prison. Subjects within each gender were randomly assigned to either high note-taking, low note-taking or no note-taking conditions. Subjects were asked to discuss intimate information during an interview while varying levels of notes were taken. Self-disclosure was assessed using items from the Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank. A 3 x 2 ANOVA was conducted. No significant main effects were found. However, a significant interaction was found. Further analysis revealed that females in the high note-taking condition disclosed less than females in the no note-taking condition. Some theoretical and clinical implications are suggested.

An investigation of the relationship between therapist competence and client outcome

Wagner, Blake Douglas January 1984 (has links)
This research project was a descriptive study conducted at a clinical psychology practicum center which investigated the relationship between supervisory ratings of student therapist competency and respective client outcome. Cases were assigned to one of four outcome categories on the basis of six outcome criteria. These included: client and therapist assessment of change in presenting complaints and adaptive functioning, client satisfaction with treatment, type of termination, and session attendance. Clinical faculty supervisors completed subjective competency ratings of student-therapists and also rated the difficulty of client cases. A semi-partial correlation was calculated between competency and outcome scores with the effects of case difficulty partialled out of the outcome scores. It was hypothesized that a significant positive semi-partial correlation would emerge. Forty-eight client cases that were month period were included in the study. seen during a six Also, 14 student therapists belonging to four practicum teams participated. The major finding of this investigation was that overall, therapist competency ratings were not significantly related to the outcomes of clients, (r=-. 12, p>.05). However, when assessing the relationship between therapist competency and outcome for each of practicum teams individually, a significant negative semi-partial correlation was found for one of them, (r=-1.03, p<.01). Problems with subjective assessments of competency were discussed and recommendations for improving evaluations were given. Results of a fine grained analysis of outcome data and related variables were presented and discussed as they apply to clinical training and service issues. / Master of Science

Psychologists and race : exploring the identities of South African trainee clinical psychologists with reference to working in multiracial contexts

Nair, Sorayah 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))—University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The question of how to address diversity in the professional training of clinical psychologists is of concern in South Africa and elsewhere. This concern is particularly salient in contemporary South Africa, where much of the sociopolitical discourse centres on issues of race, transformation, relevance and redress. This research is in line with current debates, and set out to explore the self articulated racial identities as well as the impact of those identities on the work of trainees in the second year of their clinical psychology masters degree, at three universities in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Trainees’ perceptions of the role of the universities in facilitating the working through of challenges identified in trainees’ racial identities and in facilitating multiracial competencies, were also explored in this study. Individual interviews were conducted with nineteen trainee psychologists. A minimally structured questionnaire was used in this qualitative inquiry. The theoretical framework underpinning the methodology used in this thesis endeavour, with a critical lens as background, is primarily supported by the “interpretive” or “hermeneutic” approach to psychological theory. Critical theory offered further support to understanding some of the complex issues in working with racialised discourses. Whilst all trainees identified themselves in racial terms, race continues to be a complex and, for many, a painful construct. For many, the family has been the primary source of racial socialisation, largely premised on essentialist, stereotypical discourse. With regard to the impact of their racial identity on their work, many indicate that their race significantly impacted on this. They reported a particular concern with working in cross-racial dyads. Racial difference was sometimes reported to enhance the clinical process, but was far more often experienced as a difficulty. The trainees were unanimous that the universities at which they had studied had fallen far short of what they would have wished in terms of facilitating multiracial competencies. The findings suggest that whilst legislation has changed the political profile of South Africa, the process of transformation within the psychological sites studied, is cause for concern. The dissatisfaction with the training provided, for many trainees centres around issues of relevance to the South African context. Despite efforts by some universities to diversify the racial profile of trainees, in the attempt to address the needs of people of colour, trainees believe efforts to be insufficient. While this study did not collect data, that could corroborate or question the opinions of trainees, results clearly suggest that trainee psychologists do not believe universities are currently doing enough. The implications of the trainees’ views are discussed and implications considered for trainees, trainers, the users of psychological services, and for the role of psychology as a discipline in civil society.

"We were in one place and the Ethics Committee in another" : trainee clinical psychologists' experiences of research ethics processes

Brindley, Robert January 2012 (has links)
Aim: Whilst there is a wide range of research that explores ethics guidance and committee perspectives of research ethics processes, there is a lack of research into trainee experiences. The aim of this study was to explore Trainee Clinical Psychologists experience of the research ethics process and provide a platform to those voices. It was hoped that this research may be able to create a deeper understanding of applicants’ experiences, in which both positive and negative experiences of the application process can be shared and explored. This understanding could then potentially support ethics committees, training courses and applicants to work together and thus improve the application process and resulting research at a national level within the context of Clinical Psychology training. Method: This study adopted a qualitative approach in conducting semi-structured interviews with three Trainee and three Newly Qualified Clinical Psychologists who had applied for ethical approval for their Doctoral thesis. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used in an attempt to illuminate the lived experience of applying for research ethical approval. Results: From the analytic procedure, three main themes emerged regarding the experience of research ethics processes from participants’ accounts: The emotional intensity and personal impact of the ethics process; Responses to and ways of managing the ethics process; and Challenges within the ethics process. Implications: This study highlights the importance of recognising the impact of the relationships between Trainee Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Psychology training courses and Research Ethics Committees upon trainees’ journey through the research ethics process. A ‘them and us’ dynamic is being maintained by misunderstandings about each other’s roles, uncertainty and stereotyping, amongst other factors. Potential ways to change this dynamic and improve the research ethics process during clinical Psychology Training has been explored.

An exploratory study of South African clinical psychologists' opinions of the insanity defence.

Styles, Philippa Igea. January 2007 (has links)
This quantitative exploratory study surveyed 64 South African clinical psychologists' opinions of the insanity defence. Clinical psychologists are increasingly becoming meaningful contributors to the judicial process in South Africa with regard to criminal incapacity. It is therefore considered important to canvas their opinions. To the author's knowledge this is the first research on psychologists' opinions of the defence in South Africa, possibly internationally. A standardized Likert scale developed by Skeem and Evans-DeCicco (2004) to gauge jury views on the insanity defence in the United States was used as the data collection tool. This research employed an overall correlational research design. Due to heterogenous variances the more liberal assumptions of non-parametric tests were used to extrapolate findings. The bulk of opinion rested in the moderate to ambivalent support ranges, with few strongly positive or negative opinions of the insanity defence. Significant results suggest that female psychologists, regardless of race, showed less support of the insanity defence than their male counterparts. Furthermore, those whose primary therapeutic orientation was psychodynamic had less support than those who practiced other modalities. However, a disappointingly small sample size and low reliability of the scale makes the generalisability of the results tentative, and thus further research is needed to verify these findings / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Vividação na pele restaurada : limite entre o viver e o morrer do paciente grande queimado e o cuidado da equipe hospitalar / Vividação in the restored skin the limit btween to live and to die of the severely-burned and the health care teams

Josélia Quintas Silva de Souza 27 February 2003 (has links)
The main goal of this research is to reflect on the severely-burned patient who is in a limit situation and who has been offered current psychological help, so that he/she is able to face the necessary treatment. This severe health situation leads the patient into a deep depression and consequently makes him/her feel that his/her life may come to an end some time in the near future. Therefore the severely-ill patients feel themselves depressed and helpless. Because they underwent very serious burns and due to their high level of morbidity they feel emotinally impaired. They need strength so that they are able to stand and face treatment. Moreover, they need to be conscious of their own deep suffering in order to face it with courage and in a positive way. The methodology chosen has a phenomenal and existential basis. Hence interviews were made with the patients and the medical staff as well so that one can understand how this tough experience happens and also what it means to the patient. Based on the patients report it was found that they feel anxious and anguished both for not knowing what is ahead for them, e. g. if they will get better and also because they are aware of death: they know they may die! The author decides to name vividação that very situation which Frankl mentions when the patients make use of their own courage, hope and sympathy to overcome anxiety and suffering. Heidegger thinks that anguish and anxiety both force the patients to care for themselves, and turn them strong in their deep inner loneliness. This fact shows that vividação is in fact ação vivida, e. g. the patients themselves fighting to defeat all that anguish, anxiety and suffering

Re-significando a ação clínica psicológica na assistência à criança queimada / Re-directing the psychological clinical action in the assistance of the burn child an experience in question

Ivana Magaly Lima Alencar Carvalheira 28 March 2003 (has links)
Espera-se, com este trabalho, apontar aberturas para ousadias responsáveis na atuação clínica, com implicações para o estudo e prática interdisciplinar / Considering the pain and suffering of the burned child who is in hospital, this author was concerned mostly with the kinds of current clinical help which are offered by the psychology professionals staff. From this view point when one researched about the saber fazer, that is, the psychological and clinical know-how, there were a great number of possibilities as to the fazer saber, e.g. how to reach the suffering child in his/her innerself and let him/her know that there is someone who in fact can help. It was found out that there were a number of attitudes, actions, interventation and interpretation which the psychologist could make use of in his relationship and care for the subject, the burned child. Therefore, the psychologist and/or researcher should be conscious about how broad the psychological clinical field is, and further he/she needs to understand clearly what may help as well as what may prevent a certain contextual action. One should start from understanding the subjects individual experience as a unique human being. This study aims to take a rather different look at the burned child specific experience, and tries to provide a new meaning to the psychological clinical action, inside a hospital, enlightened by both the existential phenomenon and attitudes for the psychological clinical action. The qualitative methodology was chosen, and it was inspired by the narrator himself. It was also supported by the phenomenal method for interpretation. The material analysed is made up of narratives based on the psychologist/researcher experiences, as well as from the burned child and the mother, who were in the Burned Treatment Center (BTC). In addition, reports from professionals belonging to the same health staff were considered. Finally , special attention was given to both the experienced/affectionate knowledge and the theoretical one, all deriving from talks to area field experts. It was discovered that the psychological action done at the BTC is in the pratical-theoretical field from the Psychological Advice, and it is deemed as an educational and psychological-clinical practice, in an interdisciplinary dimension of a clinical social action. M oreover, some special peculiarities were found from the communication among the professional psychologist, the burned child and the mother. Those peculiarities were the tools which facilitated the psychologist

Leite, Paula Rachel Louro 25 February 2013 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 958205 bytes, checksum: 28a17ff0c0800375ffcfc838621a7986 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study aimed to evince the characteristics of the genre and style of the activity from the clinical psychologists in order to understand how this activity is conducted. for this, a qualitative research was conducted, of non-experimental nature and exploratory technique. This study utilizes the expertise of the Clinic of Activity, proposed by Yves Clot, which seeks to understand the work beyond the prescribed and observable, and from this, arise the concepts of genre and style of activity, which are investigated here. Undoubtedly important for the psychological mobilization of the subject in a work situation, the genres of activity are a way of rediscover yourself in the world and know how to act. The genre governs the interprofessional relations and guides the collectives of labor to locate itself and know how to act in situations. This work to adjustment of the genre to make it an instrument of action is called professional style. This notion of style of activity presupposes that for a subject come to act there is not enough follow only the collective, but also that it should be oriented from himself. This research involved the participation of nine independent clinical psychologists, all women, in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba state, aged between 29 and 50 years. With regard to the time of performance in clinical service, ranged between five and 28 years, with an average of 11 years. The selection of participants was made by convenience sampling and the number of participants was established being the saturation of information criterion. Two techniques were used for the production of data: a socio-demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The data obtained through the socio-demographic questionnaire were analyzed descriptively helping to understand the sample and discuss the information obtained in the interviews. These were read and grouped according to the general and specific objectives, and been found 4 categories called: Formation, Other Works, Experience/life and Genres & Styles. Finally, this work allowed the identification of the existence of a genre of activity from clinical psychologists in the city of João Pessoa and point out different styles of the same professional collective. The importance of academic and complementary formation as supervision and analysis / therapy itself, was quite detached by professionals interviewed. The influence of other jobs and motherhood in the performance of clinical practice was also seen in the results.

Burger, Martinus Charl 13 February 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Clinical Psychology) / The primary aim of this study is to investigate the different subsystems involved in a child custody case. By identifying the various patterns of interaction within each subsystem this work attempts to provide the clinical psychologist with a condensed frame of reference for the role of expert witness in cases of this nature. The study focuses therefore on the legal system in South Africa, the family system in the process of divorce as well as models of assessment used by practicing psychologists when giving expert testimony. In investigating the legal system, the study starts off by highlighting the premises from which the law derives its findings - in both constituted laws and judicial precedents. The best interests of the child as overriding standard is traced through various laws and judicial findings. The study then turns to the latest developments following the promulgation of the Mediation in Certain Divorce Matters Act no 24 of 1987. The hesitancy and doubts that prevail among practitioners of the law concerning this Act are noted. the study initially looks at divorce, then moves on to the the children subsystem.
