Role of Intimacy, Rumination, and Sleep Quality on Psychological and Physical Health

abstract: A sense of closeness (or intimacy) is important in nearly every relationship in life, whether it is within friendships, family, or romantic relationships. In the current thesis, intimacy is measured within four specific dimensions: emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual. Research shows that intimate relationships have been linked to mental and physical health outcomes. In addition, there is a novel explanation for the link between intimacy and health through rumination and sleep quality. The current study examined 2 primary aims: 1) to examine the relationship between intimacy and depression ; 2) to assess the role of intimacy, rumination and sleep quality on mental and on physical health. Results for Aim 1 suggest that there is a link between intimacy and both depression and physical health; where the higher the intimacy the lower the depression and the better physical health. For Aim 2, results indicated that there was a significant serial relationship between intimacy, rumination, sleep quality and both depression and physical health; where in the first model, higher intimacy predicted less rumination, better sleep quality, and lower depression; and, in the second model higher intimacy predicted less rumination, better sleep quality and higher physical health. The current study suggests that intimacy does have its own distinct contributions to health outcomes and that rumination and sleep quality do have a implication on intimate relationships. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2020

Investigating Pre-Financial Close Risks Associated with Communal Land Ownership Rights in Onshore Wind Energy Development in South Africa

There are challenges to be addressed if South Africa is to reach its full potential in exploiting wind energy resources. One of such challenges is communal land ownership, which is used for the development of wind energy in rural areas. Often, communal lands have no formal land structures, ownership or title deeds to support the individuals and communities that claim possession thereof. This challenge of communal land ownership and the associated risks impact upon investments by independent power producers in wind energy infrastructure. Land in South Africa remains a highly sensitive issue given the historical injustice of land dispossession which became the source of poverty and inequality. Moreover, transitioning to renewable energy sources would add more pressure on land scarcity. Commercial wind energy projects are capital intensive, with high annual turnovers. Achieving financial close is a risk mitigation strategy that confirms that early-stage contractual agreements have been reached in the development stage of a wind project lifecycle. Therefore, risk identification and allocation are fundamental to ensuring that the structuring and contractual obligations of non-recourse project financing are met. Wind energy plants require significant stretches of land, and this is progressing at an industrial scale and often, onshore wind energy projects are located in rural areas, thereby impacting local communities. Land ownership rights are a key element for communities, in which renewable energy development takes place. Households living on communal land, of which the right to use land is vested in individual households, are situated on such lands. This study uses the theory of risk management to investigate pre-financial close risks in developing wind energy associated with communal land ownership rights and the extent to which those risks inhibit wind energy projects from reaching financial close in South Africa. An exploratory research design was applied, while a questionnaire survey was used to collect data from wind developers. The study identified the pre-financial close risks associated with communal land to be technical, legal, economic, social and political risks. Indeed, there is a lack of clear, long-term policy framework to support investments in clean energy infrastructure. This causes significant delays to wind energy project development and it negatively affects financial close. In addition, there are competing interests among multiple stakeholders, leading to the burdensome processes involved in securing leasehold agreements on communal land. As a result, projects which were initially proposed on communal land, have not always reach financial close as planned while others were stopped. The results show that risk mitigation tools could include effective and continuous stakeholder management which is critical to reaching financial close. Furthermore, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has not established a streamlined process that developers can follow to secure communal land leasehold rights, given that the process is time-consuming.

A Professional Learning Community Design: Using Close Reading Techniques to Improve the U.S. History Comprehension

This dissertation in practice presents a research-based model for staff development utilizing the elements of a professional learning community. The focus of this problem of practice was determined through an analysis of one high school's reading data indicating that 36% of the student body was reading below grade level according to the state assessment test for reading. Researchers have noted that reading demands for college and careers have increased (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2011; Barton, 2000; Common Core State Standards, 2014). If students do not develop reading proficiency to graduate with a high school diploma, they are at risk of limited career choices without college and possible unemployment. Drawing upon a review of related literature in reading education, adolescent literacy, disciplinary literacy, and staff development, a professional learning community model was proposed to address improvement in teacher capacity by demonstrating the knowledge, dispositions, and skills of pedagogical knowledge of the Common Core State Standards (Florida Department of Education, Language Arts Florida Standards, 2014) and the use of close reading techniques to increase reading comprehension of U.S. History students. This design utilizes the five elements of the DuFour (2010) model of a professional learning community including (a) focus of learning; (b) collaborative culture; (c) collaborative inquiry; (d) commitment to continuous improvement; and (e) results oriented mindset. A logic model further delineates the priorities, program plan, and intended outcomes for the implementation of this model.

Faster R-CNN based CubeSat Close Proximity Detection and Attitude Estimation

Automatic detection of space objects in optical images is important to close proximity operations, relative navigation, and situational awareness. To better protect space assets, it is very important not only to know where a space object is, but also what the object is. In this dissertation, a method for detecting multiple 1U, 2U, 3U, and 6U CubeSats based on the faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) is described. CubeSats detection models are developed using Web-searched and computer-aided design images. In addition, a two-step method is presented for detecting a rotating CubeSat in close proximity from a sequence of images without the use of intrinsic or external camera parameters. First, a Faster R-CNN trained on synthetic images of 1U, 2U, 3U, and 6U CubeSats locates the CubeSat in each image and assigns a weight to each CubeSat class. Then, these classification results are combined using Dempster's rule. The method is tested on simulated scenarios where the rotating 3U and 6U CubeSats are in unfavorable views or in dark environments. Faster R-CNN detection results contain useful information for tracking, navigation, pose estimation, and simultaneous localization and mapping. A coarse single-point attitude estimation method is proposed utilizing the centroids of the bounding boxes surrounding the CubeSats in the image. The centroids define the line-of-sight (LOS) vectors to the detected CubeSats in the camera frame, and the LOS vectors in the reference frame are assumed to be obtained from global positioning system (GPS). The three-axis attitude is determined from the vector observations by solving Wahba's problem. The attitude estimation concept is tested on simulated scenarios using Autodesk Maya.
