The role of cloud computing in addressing small, medium enterprise challenges in South Africa

This thesis was motivated by Roberts (2010) who found that 63% of SMEs in South Africa do not make it past second year of operation. To expand further on this problem, we reviewed literature to understand key business challenges experienced by SMEs in South Africa which contribute to this high failure rate. The challenges include red tape, labour legislation, lack of skills, lack of innovation, impact of crime, and lack of funds. The research project aimed to answer a key question: “How can information technology, in the form of Cloud Computing be used to address the challenges faced by small and medium businesses in South Africa?” To answer this question, data was collected from 265 SME companies and quantitatively analysed. It is important to note that the profile of SMEs targeted in this study are those that employed fewer than 200 employees, with a turnover of not less than 26 million rand per annum, and registered with South African Revenue Services (SARS) and also with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) of South Africa. Over 60% of the firms that responded to the survey were in business for more than 10 years which means we are mainly dealing with data from businesses that have past the survivalist stage and are matured businesses. These are businesses that can share their experiences and challenges they faced throughout their journey. The profile of SMEs in this study should not be confused with that of Very Small Medium Enterprise Businesses. The questionnaire was designed to address four themes being the Demographic profile, SME Business Environment, Threat of Survival, and lastly Technology Adoption. Key finding in this research is that 60% of the panellists stated that red tape is the overriding challenge that small businesses contend with. 67% of the panellists confirmed that they have not invested in their businesses in the past year; and 53% stated that they have not applied for finance from the bank for fear of being rejected. Only 30% of the SME market were found to use enterprise resource planning (ERP) and 62% do not have their own IT department. Of great concern is that 65% of the panellists have experienced server down time at least once in the past year. Inability to predict the rising IT costs in a firm has been cited as the main concern when running IT on premise. The cost predictability finding was also discovered to be a benefit enjoyed by the SMEs who use Cloud Computing. The conclusion is that there is a relationship between Cloud Computing, Small and Medium Enterprise businesses and the challenges they face in their business environment. To address the identified business challenges, technology adoption studies by Gumbi & Mnkandla (2015), Carcary, Doherty & Conway (2014), Lacovou et al (1995), Mohlomeane & Ruxwana (2014), Kshetri (2010), BMI Research (2018), Conway & Curry (2012), Li, Zhao & Yu (2015), Wernefeldt (1985), Schindehuitte & Morris (2001), Tornatzy & Flesher (1991) were reviewed. From these publications, the Technology, Organisational and Environmental (TOE) was found to be relevant and of interest for use in answering the main research question. This study developed the Cloud Adoption Framework which is the anchor of all SME challenges. Key study contribution is that the TOE model, which is predominantly used to understand the determinants of technology adoption like various industry applications, infrastructure innovations etc., are now used to address specific challenges that have contributed in the high failure rate of SME business. This is the first-time TOE model has been used to align with key SME challenges that contribute to firms’ failure. Specific technology across Software, Infrastructure and Platform services models are recommended for use by SMEs to ensure challenges are mitigated and improve the chances of survival for SMEs operating in South Africa. By following the recommended Cloud Adoption Framework, SMEs should be able to navigate the complexities brought about by the tough operating environment and also the technologies available to address those challenges. All six challenges have solutions in Cloud Computing and SMEs are educated on these solutions and also how to access these on a pay as you use model of consumption. / Business Management / D.B.L.

<p>Transitioning to cloud computing is a complex and major effort for large multinational corporations (MNCs). Automated cloud migration tools (ACMTs) have been developed and are evolving to streamline this process. The potential benefits of their use are reported to be significant in terms of cost, time, and business innovation. Academic research on ACMTs and the best leadership practices for their use has been limited. </p><p> </p><p>The purpose of the research was to identify the best leadership practices of MNCs in the use of automated migration tools for the adoption of commercial cloud computing platforms. Adoption of cloud computing is a major technological shift occurring globally, and is still in early stages of growth. Major providers of commercial cloud computing platforms include technological giants such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google, Oracle and IBM.</p><p> </p><p>A meta-analysis designed research approach focusing on the triangulation of case studies, cloud computing industry data and trends from cloud service providers (CSP) revealed that best practices of leaders within MNCs fall under three main categories: awareness, impact and actions. Further, it was determined that the ACMTs with the most advanced capabilities do not necessarily equate to faster realization of cloud value for the MNC. </p><p> </p>With the continued development of ACMTs and their growing adoption, further study on the role of automation in cloud migration solution deployment will be critical, as ACMT capabilities will continue to mature. No longer the sole domain of becoming a market leader alone, organizations that utilize ACMTs are increasingly doing so just to maintain competitive parity, as the true differentiator in organizational excellence is now in cloud optimization and not simply just getting to the cloud.

In a traditional business environment, companies set up their organisation’s IT data infrastructure, install their applications and carry out the maintenance and management of their infrastructures. Whereas Cloud computing removes the need for companies to set up own data centers and run enterprise applications. Cloud computing technology provides businesses with the advantage of on-demand access, agility, scalability, flexibility and reduced cost of computing. An appreciable increase is being observed in the acceptance and migration to this new IT model in developing economies. In Nigeria, it has been observed that there is a somewhat unimpressive rate of adoption of Cloud computing by the microfinance operators. This research investigates the reason for the slow adoption of Cloud computing by SMEs in Nigeria with special consideration to the Microfinance subsector and to develop a model for improving the adoption of cloud computing by microfinance organisations. The research was conducted using a qualitative research design method. Interview was the main data collection instrument and data collected was analysed using thematic content analysis method. The analysis of the study revealed that SMEs in Nigeria, with particular reference to microfinance subsector in Akwa Ibom State are yet fully to embrace cloud technology. It was discovered that most of the SMEs studied, has some level of reservation about cloud computing arising from not having appropriate education and enlightenment about the cloud economic offerings and potentials. From the outcome of the research, the researcher identified that most people’s concerns are as a result of lack of knowledge about cloud computing and so the researcher concluded that appropriate enlightenment by industry stakeholders, cloud service providers, cloud enthusiasts and even the government on the risks and overwhelming economic incentives of cloud computing as well as the provision of a monitored free trial services will encourage the adoption of cloud computing by SMEs. / College of Engineering, Science and Technology / M.Tech. The expanding adoption of cloud computing services by businesses has transformed IT infrastructure and data management in the computing space. Cloud computing offers advantages such as availability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, making it a favored choice for businesses of all sizes. The aim of this thesis is to compare private and public cloud computing services in terms of pricing and implementation effort as well as comparing the cloud providers to each other. The top three cloud providers that will be examined are Google GCP, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon AWS. The study examines different pricing models and evaluates their effectiveness in different business scenarios. In addition, the thesis also discusses the challenges associated with building and maintaining private infrastructure and the deployment of applications to cloud computing service are examined. The research methodology involves data collection, analysis, and a case study of developing and deploying a ticketing system application on different cloud platforms. The ticket system helps to provide a realistic example and investigation of the cloud providers. The findings will help companies make informed decisions regarding the selection of the most appropriate cloud computing service based on pricing models and implementation efforts. The thesis provides valuable information on private and public cloud computing and recommends appropriate pricing models for different scenarios. This study adds to existing knowledge by analyzing current pricing models and deployment concepts in cloud computing. The thesis does not propose new solutions but follows a structured format compiling information on private, and public cloud computing and a comprehensive review of cloud computing pricing models and marketing efforts. / Den växande adoptionen av molntjänster inom företag har förändrat IT-infrastrukturen och datahanteringen inom datorområdet. Molntjänster erbjuder fördelar såsom tillgänglighet, skalbarhet och kostnadseffektivitet, vilket gör det till ett populärt val för företag i alla storlekar. Syftet med denna avhandling är att jämföra privata och offentliga molntjänster med avseende på prissättning och implementeringsinsatser samt att jämföra molnleverantörerna med varandra. De tre främsta molnleverantörerna som kommer att undersökas är Google GCP, Microsoft Azure och Amazon AWS. Studien undersöker olika prismodeller och utvärderar deras effektivitet i olika affärsscenarier. Dessutom diskuterar avhandlingen också utmaningarna med att bygga och underhålla privat infrastruktur samt implementeringen av applikationer till molntjänster. Forskningsmetodologin omfattar datainsamling, analys och en fallstudie av utveckling och implementering av ett support system på olika molnplattformar. Supportsystemet hjälper till att ge ett realistiskt exempel och undersökning av molnleverantörerna. Resultaten kommer att hjälpa företag att fatta informerade beslut när det gäller valet av lämpligaste molntjänst baserat på prismodeller och implementeringsinsatser. Avhandlingen tillhandahåller värdefull information om privat och offentlig molntjänst och rekommenderar lämpliga prismodeller för olika scenarier. Denna studie bidrar till befintlig kunskap genom att analysera nuvarande prismodeller och implementeringskoncept inom molntjänster.
