Performance Comparison Study of Clusters on Public Clouds / Prestandajämförelse av cluster på offentliga molnleverantörerWahlberg, Martin January 2019 (has links)
As cloud computing has become the more popular choice to host clusters in recent times there are multiple providers that offer their services to the public such as Amazon web services, Google cloud platform and Microsoft Azure. The decision of cluster provider is not only a decision of provider, it is also an indirect decision of cluster infrastructure. The indirect choice of infrastructure makes it important to consider any potential differences in cluster performance caused by the infrastructure in combination with the workload type, but also the cost of the infrastructure on the available public cloud providers. To evaluate whether or not there are any significant differences in either cluster cost or performance between the available public cloud providers, a performance comparison study was conducted. The study consisted of multiple clusters hosted on Amazon Web Services and the Google Cloud Platform. The clusters had access to five different instance types that each correspond to a specific number of available cores, amount of memory and storage. All clusters executed a CPU intensive, I/O intensive, and MapReduce workload while simultaneously having its performance monitored with regard to CPU, memory, and disk usage. The performance comparison study revealed that there are significant performance differences between clusters hosted on Amazon web services and Google cloud platform for the chosen workload types. Since there are significant differences it can be concluded that the choice of provider is crucial as it impacts the cluster performance. Comparing the selected instance types against each other with regard to performance and cost, reveals that a subset of them have better performance as well as lower cost. The instance types that is not a part of this subset, have either better performance or lower cost than its counterpart on the other provider.

The decision to adopt cloud computing services should involve business units of an insurance company as well as information technology (IT) because cloud computing services are viewed as both a technology offering and business alternative. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore the strategies used by IT architects of an Illinois-based insurance company when adopting cloud computing services. The theory supporting this study was the technology acceptance model. The study's population consisted of IT architects from an Illinois-based insurance company that have used strategies to adopt cloud computing services. This study's data collection included semistructured interviews and review of organizational documents. Member checking with each participant increased the validity of this study's findings. Four major themes emerged from this study: strategies to adopt cloud computing services, strategies to adopt cloud services models, strategies to adopt cloud computing models, and concerns affecting the strategies to adopt cloud computing services. The study findings may assist IT architects in developing effective strategies to adopt cloud computing services for their respective business unit. This study might serve as a foundation for positive social change by decreasing customer concerns regarding critical information being compromised when adopting cloud computing services.

Migrating from IT legacy systems to Cloud Computing, is a complex task for an organization to undertake since changes of both technical end organizational aspects are required to take advantage of all capabilities that Public Cloud offer. A limited number of studies have been conducted exploring the organizational perspective of the migration process to Public Cloud for larger organization, which are bounded to their IT legacy. This thesis aims to contribute with knowledge to this gap by addressing the following purpose: investigate how the migration to Public Cloud affects an organization with large IT legacy. Anchored in a case study at an incumbent enterprise, the thesis bridges literature on Cloud Computing, organizational change management and organizational aspects of the migration process. Findings from empirics indicate that the case company is experiencing multiple layers of complexity of change management such as: change management, culture, internal processes, IT legacy and security, are essential to be managed to successfully migrate to Public Cloud. These findings suggest that the challenges are constraining the migration towards Public Cloud and especially the development of the IT environment, and therefore inhibit the essential value-creation processes. Another challenge is the generalized view of security being a great risk which further inhibits the evolvement and process towards Public Cloud. The thesis presents that although the migration to Public Cloud is primarily of technical concern, the migration process is also a major organizational change management process with large challenges that needs to be considered for a successful migration. Hence, the thesis contributes to better understanding of how an organization with substantial IT legacy can prepare for the emerging changes of a potential technology shift. / Att migrera från ett IT arv med förlegade IT system till molnbaserad datahantering är en komplex uppgift för en organisation eftersom stora förändringar krävs för att utnyttja alla möjligheter som publika molntjänster erbjuder. Ett begränsat antal studier har genomförts som undersöker migrationsprocessens till publikt moln från ett organisationsperspektiv, för större organisation som är begränsad till föråldrad IT infrastruktur. Detta examensarbete syftar till att bidra med kunskap till detta gap genom att uppfylla följande syfte: undersöka hur övergångsprocessen till publikt moln påverkar en organisation med stort IT arv. Förankrat i en fallstudie hos ett etablerat företag, förenar uppsatsen litteratur om molnbaserad datahantering, organisationsförändringshantering och organisatoriska aspekter av migrationsprocessen. Resultat från studien på företaget visar flera lager av komplexitet i förändringshantering som till exempel: förändringsledning, kultur, interna processer, IT arv och säkerhet, vilka är viktiga områden att kunna hantera för en framgångsrik migrering till Public Cloud. Detta resultat tyder på att dessa utmaningar begränsar migrationen mot publika moln och utvecklingen av IT miljön som hämmar de väsentliga värdeskapande affärsprocesserna. En annan utmaning är att den allmänna uppfattningen om säkerhet utgör en stor risk som ytterligare hämmar utvecklingen och processen mot publika moln. Examensarbetet presenterar, att trots övergångsprocessen mot publikt moln är av tekniskt intresse, är migrationsprocessen en viktig organisationsförändringsprocess med stora utmaningar som måste beaktas för en lyckad transformation. Med detta bidrar avhandlingen till bättre förståelse för hur organisationer med betydande IT arv kan förbereda sig för de framväxande förändringarna av ett potentiellt tekniskt skift.

Organizations are increasingly adopting the cloud to meet their business goals more cost-effectively. Cloud benefits like scalability, broad access, high availability, and cost-effectiveness provide a great incentive for organizations to move their applications to the cloud. However, concerns regarding privacy data protection remain one of the top concerns for applications migrating to the cloud. With various legislations and regulations mandating organizations to protect personal data, it is required that cloud applications and associated infrastructure are designed in a manner that provides adequate data protection. To achieve this there is a need to understand various data protection legislations, regulations, and risks faced by the cloud applications and various security controls that can be put in place to address those. Smart homes equipped with health monitoring systems have the potential to monitor the health of elderly people in their homes. In such homes, sensors are employed to monitor the activity of individuals and leverage that information to detect anomalies and raise alarms to the caretakers. However, hosting such a system in the cloud has potential privacy impacts, since health data is treated as sensitive privacy data in many regulations. This thesis is conducted based on a use case of the deployment of an elderly health care monitoring system for municipalities in Sweden. I analyzed various regulations and privacy risks in migrating such a health monitoring system to the public cloud, the regulations captured are specific to the use case where the e-health data of Swedish citizens is captured in the cloud. The study also highlights various data protection approaches that can be employed to address the identified concerns. In the thesis, I highlighted that data residency, data control, and the possibility of data leakage from the public cloud are among the top concerns for the municipality. I also listed various applicable data protection regulations and legislation, with “Swedish law for public access to information and secrecy” having a crucial influence on privacy data storage. I evaluated various data protection approaches to alleviate the above concerns, which include access control, anonymization, data splitting, cryptographic measures, and leveraging public cloud capabilities.

With advances in information technology, various cloud computing related research and development has become a hot trend. Except the vast amount of studies and reports appearing in local magazines and newspapers, government agencies have also set up corresponding R & D projects. However, most of these studies focus on the infrastructure or platform level of the cloud. For example, the projects for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) include the Cloud Computing Center for Mobile Application at Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the Cloud Service and Technology Center at Information Industry Institute (III) and the already launched ¡§hiCloud¡¨ at Chunghwa Telecom Corporation. In the business side, there is TCloud Computing that does the development of both "Infrastructure" and "Platform as a Service" (PaaS). As to Software as a Service (SaaS) related research, III has gathered 10 domestic companies to participate the co-operation plans for education cloud, manufacture cloud, ¡K and practice cloud, a total of nine cloud services. However, they are all in the early stages without much success stories or usages.
The study of this thesis is angled toward business needs, from the point of resource-based analysis to see how a firm will be affected if introduction of SaaS to business. In particular, we will study this subject from four dimensions, which are the competitiveness of enterprises, IT outsourcing strategy, cost structure analysis and data security technology, to identify the possible critical factors for the introduction for cloud computing services. As most people are perceived, cloud computing has a comparative advantage of cost saving over traditional approach.

The first section explains the concept of cloud computing, its characteristics and individual models. The following part is a brief analysis of the size and development of the current market for cloud services. Next section focuses on the creation of industry categories acording to area of their business, together with their description. The actual categories are examined in part four, along with their expenditures on IT and state of Cloud's adoption, in addition with specific advantages and obstacles. Results from previous section are summarized in part five. In conclusion, the hypothesis is verified and the main findings summarized.

Indexing file metadata using a distributed search engine for searching files on a public cloud storageHabtu, Simon January 2018 (has links)
Visma Labs AB or Visma wanted to conduct experiments to see if file metadata could be indexed for searching files on a public cloud storage. Given that storing files in a public cloud storage is cheaper than the current storage solution, the implementation could save Visma money otherwise spent on expensive storage costs. The thesis is therefore to find and evaluate an approach chosen for indexing file metadata and searching files on a public cloud storage with the chosen distributed search engine Elasticsearch. The architecture of the proposed solution is similar to a file service and was implemented using several containerized services for it to function. The results show that the file service solution is indeed feasible but would need further tuning and more resources to function according to the demands of Visma. / Visma Labs AB eller Visma ville genomföra experiment för att se om filmetadata skulle kunna indexeras för att söka efter filer på ett publikt moln. Med tanke på att lagring av filer på ett publikt moln är billigare än den nuvarande lagringslösningen, kan implementeringen spara Visma pengar som spenderas på dyra lagringskostnader. Denna studie är därför till för att hitta och utvärdera ett tillvägagångssätt valt för att indexera filmetadata och söka filer på ett offentligt molnlagring med den utvalda distribuerade sökmotorn Elasticsearch. Arkitekturen för den föreslagna lösningen har likenelser av en filtjänst och implementerades med flera containeriserade tjänster för att den ska fungera. Resultaten visar att filservicelösningen verkligen är möjlig men skulle behöva ytterligare modifikationer och fler resurser att fungera enligt Vismas krav.

Cloud computing has been given a great deal of attention during recent years. Almost all the technology market leaders and leading hosting service providers (like IBM, Microsoft and Verizon) have entered into the Cloud market as Cloud Providers. Cloud computing promises to provide highly available, secure, low cost, agile and highly scalable solution to the consumers. Scania is a global company and one of the world’s leading heavy vehicle manufacturers with 35,000+ employees. All the large organizations such as Scania, aim to constantly update themselves with the latest technology in order to meet their business requirements but, these organizations must always be convinced that there is a strong reason(s) to implement new technology. This research provides the method and criteria in relation to initiating Cloud computing. A number of Scania’s specific business requirements that it is possible to map to the Cloud are addressed in this thesis. The methodology of research is split in two parts. Firstly, the identification of business cases at Scania and their requirements with the Cloud and Secondly, the evaluation and comparison of the functionalities and capabilities of different vendors. The accumulated data is then compared and suitable vendors, according to those business requirements are suggested. This thesis also shares the experience of moving on premise applications to the Cloud. These are Scania specific applications which are currently being hosted in-house. The research also addresses the possibilities of portability between the Cloud providers. Although there is no standardization in relation to Cloud computing, some initiatives such as OpenStack are available and its current position and some application and data migration tools are also discussed. The thesis concludes with a general discussion, recommendations in relation to adapting Cloud computing and selecting the Cloud provider. This recommendation applies to every organization including Scania.
