Binding of Nitrite in Concrete, Cement Mortar and Paste

Alshehri, Saad 03 November 2015 (has links)
Calcium nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor is mainly used to protect steel reinforcement in concrete by reducing its corrosion rate. Hence the effectiveness of calcium nitrite depends on its availability as a free nitrite in the pore solution. The present research work aims to determine the concrete mixture component mostly responsible for nitrite binding in concrete. Firstly, the experimental program included testing of nitrite binding in cement paste. Secondly, the effect of adding the fine aggregate (mortar mix) on nitrite binding was assessed. Finally, the mix with coarse aggregate (concrete mix) was evaluated. In-situ leaching method was used to obtain the pore solution that was needed. Measurement of pore solution with the In-situ leaching method and after an average of 48 days showed that concrete specimens have the most nitrite binding capacity. Then, the binding of nitrite was less in mortar and paste specimens respectively. Therefore, concrete specimens bind more nitrite compared to the paste and mortar specimens. The binding ratio increased whenever the nitrite addition level increased. Nevertheless, the free nitrite were similar in the case of the lowest nitrite addition for all types of mix. The pH levels for the mixes with nitrite present, were lower than those of the control mixes.

Revamping aggregate property requirements for portland cement concrete

Stutts, Zachary William 18 June 2012 (has links)
Current Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) procedures for evaluating coarse aggregate for portland cement concrete (PCC) have been in place for over 39 years. Item 421 in the TxDOT "Standard Specifications for Construction and Maintenance of Highways, Streets, and Bridges" describes the tests and test limits that must be met by aggregates before they can be approved for use in portland cement concrete applications. The intention of Item 421 is to ensure that only strong, durable aggregates are used in concrete so that the life of concrete is not cut short by common distress mechanisms which ultimately lead to costly repairs and replacements. The two main tests currently used by TxDOT to evaluate aggregates are the magnesium sulfate soundness test and the Los Angeles abrasion and impact test. These tests are meant to characterize the overall soundness and resistance to abrasion and impact of an aggregate respectively. Unfortunately, past research has shown that the magnesium sulfate soundness and test and the Los Angeles abrasion and impact test are not able to successfully predict the field performance of an aggregate in concrete. The requirements of item 421 have thus far done a reasonably good job of ensuring long-lasting concrete; however the current tests and test limits may be unnecessarily precluding the use of some local materials. As high quality aggregate sources are depleted and transportation costs increase, it will become more necessary to distinguish good performers from marginal and poor performers in the future. If aggregate tests can be found that demonstrate better correlations with field performance, it may be possible to use more local aggregate sources and still provide the desired level of reliability for pavements, bridges, and other TxDOT concrete applications. Researchers are in the processing of collecting coarse and fine aggregates commonly used in Texas and testing these aggregates on a variety of alternative tests. Researchers will attempt to relate this test data to concrete behavior and ultimately recommend tests for improved TxDOT aggregate specifications. / text

Evaluating The Use Of Recycled Concrete Aggregate In French Drain Applications

Behring, Zachary 01 January 2013 (has links)
Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is often used as a replacement of virgin aggregate in road foundations (base course), embankments, hot-mix asphalt, and Portland cement concrete. However, the use of RCA in exfiltration drainage systems, such as French drains, is currently prohibited in many states of the U.S. The French drain system collects water runoff from the road pavement and transfers to slotted pipes underground and then filters through coarse aggregate and geotextile. The primary concerns with using RCA as a drainage media are the fines content and the precipitation of calcium carbonate to cause a reducing in filter fabric permittivity. Additional concerns include the potential for rehydration of RCA fines. The performance of RCA as drainage material has not been evaluated by many researchers and the limited information limits its use. A literature review has been conducted on the available information related to RCA as drainage material. A survey was issued to the Departments of Transportation across the nation in regards to using RCA particularly in French drains. Some state highway agencies have reported the use of RCA as base course; however, no state reports the use of RCA in exfiltration drainage systems. This thesis describes the investigations on the performance of RCA as backfill material in French drains. RCA was tested for its physical properties including, specific gravity, unit weight, percent voids, absorption, and abrasion resistance. RCA cleaning/washing methods were also applied to evaluate the fines removal processes. The potential for RCA rehydration was iv evaluated by means of heat of hydration, pH, compressive strength, and setting time. The permeability of RCA was tested using the No. 4 gradation. Long term permeability testing was conducted to evaluate the tendency for geotextile clogging from RCA fines. Calcium carbonate precipitation was also evaluated and a procedure to accelerate the precipitation process was developed. The results show that RCA has a high abrasion value, that is, it is very susceptible to break down from abrasion during aggregate handling such as transportation, stockpiling, or placing. The most effective cleaning method was found to be pressure washing with agitation. RCA has not demonstrated the tendency to rehydrate and harden when mixed with water. The permeability test results show that the No. 4 gradation does not restrict the flow of water; the flow rate is highly dependent on the hydraulic system itself, however excessive fines can cause large reductions in permeability over time. It has been determined that No. 4 gradation of RCA can provide a suitable drainage media providing the RCA is properly treated before its use.

Impact resistance of deflection-hardening fiber reinforced concretes with different mixture parameters

Banyhussan, Q.S., Yildirim, Gurkan, Anil, O., Erdem, R.T., Ashour, Ashraf, Sahmaran, M. 31 January 2019 (has links)
Yes / The impact behavior of deflection-hardening High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Concretes (HPFRCs) was evaluated herein. During the preparation of HPFRCs, fiber type and amount, fly ash to Portland cement ratio and aggregate to binder ratio were taken into consideration. HPFRC beams were tested for impact resistance using free-fall drop-weight test. Acceleration, displacement and impact load vs. time graphs were constructed and their relationship to the proposed mixture parameters were evaluated. The paper also aims to present and verify a nonlinear finite element analysis, employing the incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis, concrete damage plasticity model and contact surface between the dropped hammer and test specimen available in ABAQUS. The proposed modelling provides extensive and accurate data on structural behavior, including acceleration, displacement profiles and residual displacement results. Experimental results which are further confirmed by numerical studies show that impact resistance of HPFRC mixtures can be significantly improved by a proper mixture proportioning. In the presence of high amounts of coarse aggregates, fly ash and increased volume of hybrid fibers, impact resistance of fiberless reference specimens can be modified in a way to exhibit relatively smaller displacement results after impact loading without risking the basic mechanical properties and deflection-hardening response with multiple cracking.

Latterza, Luciano de Mello 18 August 1998 (has links)
This dissertation researches the potential of the use of construction and demolition debris (C&D), crushed in the recycling station of Ribeirão Preto-SP, as coarse aggregate to make concrete of low and medium strenght. The use of coarse fraction, 4,8 mm < Dmax < 19,0 mm, substituting, partial or totally the natural aggregate, as recommended in NBR 7211/82, can result in a significant economy on the production of urban components and for social interest constructions. The present work presents the physical and granulometric characteristics of the recycled aggregate, comparing with the natural one, used as reference. Experimental results are showed and compared. The influence of recycled aggregate on the loss of the slump of fresh concrete and on the mechanical properties of harden concrete were analyzed. Finally, the flexural behavior of a model of panels was evaluated.

This research contributes to the study of concrete carbonation using recycled concrete coarse aggregates (RCA) and rice husk ash (RHA). The use of RHA may contribute to reduce the effects of RCA's high porosity on the properties of the concrete. It was used 0,25 and 50% of RCA in replacement of natural aggregate; 0,10 and 20% of RHA as cement replacement; and water/binder 0.42, 0.53 and 0.64. For the accelerated carbonation test it was used a carbonation chamber with continuous feeding gaseous solution at 3% CO2 and controled relative humidity, where the concrete samples remained for 63 days. The results point to a positive effect of the use of RHA in concrete produced with RCA. Concretes with water/binder 0.42, for the most of the concrete tested, resulted in a compressive strength of 40 MPa to 55 MPa, with carbonation coefficient of 1.0mm/day1/2 to 1.5 mm/day1/2, independent of the amount of the RHA. However, concretes with higher water/binder (0.64) showed resistance between 15 MPa and 30 MPa, and for most of these the carbonation coefficient is below 3.0 mm/day1/2 and above 2.0 mm/day1/2.

Efeito da resistência e da dimensão máxima característica do agregado graúdo nas propriedades mecânicas do concreto de alto desempenho / Effect of compressive strength and the maximum size of coarse aggregate characteristics on mechanical properties of high performance concrete

Rohden, Abrahão Bernardo January 2012 (has links)
Aggregates role in the concrete behavior under high stress level : experimental and numerical analysis

Paulina, Ewa 15 July 2013 (has links)
This PhD thesis focuses on identifying concrete behavior under high triaxial loading. The study is carried out within a more general context of understanding the behavior of concrete under impact, which induces very high-intensity triaxial stress states. In order to reproduce very high stress levels with well-controlled loading paths, static triaxial tests are carried out on concrete samples by means of a very high-capacity triaxial press. We are interested in the influence of coarse aggregates, which occupy approximately 40% of the concrete volume. More specifically, the effects of coarse aggregate shape and composition on concrete behavior for triaxial compression tests ranging from 0 to 650 MPa of confinement are investigated. Both macroscopic response and failure patterns are concerned. Coarse aggregate shape seems to have only a slight influence on concrete behavior while the effects of coarse aggregate composition are quite important over whole range of confining pressures. The second part of the thesis is devoted to a numerical modeling of concrete. The main objective of this numerical work is to develop a very simple model in terms of interaction laws and introduce concrete heterogeneity at the mesoscopic level. A mesoscopic model of concrete is thus established within the discrete element framework. The effects of coarse aggregate and aggregate/mortar interface properties on the stress-strain curves and damage mechanisms in a concrete sample are investigated. On the other hand, the influence of voids is studied using one-phase samples having different void properties. A complex, nonlinear behavior of a numerical specimen arising from the void structuring is observed. The numerical results complete and allow better understanding of experimental observations.
