Type-Safe Domain-Specific Code Graph Construction Using Scala

As an extension to the ongoing Coconut (COde COnstructing User Tool) project at McMaster University, we present a Scala library for constructing type-safe domain-specific languages that uses Coconut’s hypergraph-based representation of code (code graphs) as the intermediate representation. Our library automatically produces strongly typed, deeply embedded DSLs given only a minimal specification of the DSL’s value types and primitives. We make extensive use of path-dependent types and implicit argument lookup to construct a type-safe interface on-the-fly, rather than requiring DSL designers to explicitly create a type-safe interface. In this thesis we present our library and demonstrate its utility as both a general-purpose DSL framework and as a suitable platform for continued research on the Coconut project. By giving practical examples of the library in use, we demonstrate both its general utility, and the striking swiftness with which new DSLs may be constructed, especially compared to the previously laborious Haskell DSLs of Coconut. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Use of High Pressure Processing to Reduce Foodborne Pathogens in Coconut Water

Juices have been implicated in numerous foodborne outbreaks over the last couple of decades. The FDA requires a 5-log10 reduction in juice products, which is most commonly achieved through pasteurization. However, pasteurization deteriorates some sensorial properties and nutritive value. Coconut water (CW; classified as a juice), is rapidly gaining popularity increasing over 300% since 2005. CW has not been implicated in a microbial outbreak, but is thermally processed to achieve the required 5-log10 CFU/ml reduction, which results in negative organoleptic properties. The objectives of this study are to determine whether E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes can grow in CW, and evaluate the use of High Pressure Processing (HPP) to reduce populations of these bacteria in CW. The three pathogens were inoculated separately into CW and bacterial populations were enumerated over 24 hours. All three bacteria reached at least 8-log10 CFU/ml after 24 hours, which was not significantly different from the control (TSB). CW was then inoculated with each pathogen and processed using HPP (400, 5000, or 600 MPa) for 120 seconds. The D-glucose, D-fructose, sucrose, and phenol oxidase levels in the CW were assessed before and after treatments. Following processing, the pathogens were enumerated from the CW. All three pathogens were reduced by more than 6-log10 CFU/ml following treatments of 500 and 600 MPa, enough to achieve the mandatory 5-log CFu/m reduction. There were no significant changes in the D-glucose, D-fructose, sucrose, and phenol oxidase activity after any of the treatments. / Master of Science in Life Sciences

A água de coco é utilizada na cultura popular como substituto da água, e também para repor eletrólitos nos casos de desidratação. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o processo de armazenamento da água de coco anão verde, produzidas comercialmente e envasadas assepticamente, por indústrias do Sertão Paraibano e do Ceará. Foram coletadas, identificadas, amostras em duas unidades industriais, no dia da sua fabricação, transportadas para o laboratório em caixas isotérmicas com gelo, onde foram analisadas, quanto aos parâmetros físico, físico químicos, microbiológicos e sensoriais, a fim de avaliar a qualidade da água de coco logo após o seu processamento. As amostras obtidas nas indústrias foram armazenadas de acordo com o planejamento fatorial experimental 22 com três repetições do ponto central, para avaliar quantitativamente a influência das variáveis de entrada sobre as respostas, turbidez, condutividade, viscosidade, pH, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez, ácido ascórbico. Constatou-se que a água de coco refrigerada deve ser armazenada a baixas temperaturas, para que sua vida útil possa ser de dez dias. Com o tempo de armazenamento, houve uma diminuição nos valores de pH, vitamina C, condutividade elétrica e sólidos solúveis totais para ambas as indústrias, sendo que os valores de sólidos solúveis totais estão de acordo com o permitido pela legislação, menos para o experimento 4.O pH de todos os experimentos não estão em conformidade com o permitido por legislação, houve aumentos simultâneos para as indústrias quanto aos parâmetros analisados de turbidez, viscosidade, e acidez total titulável, o binômio tempo x temperatura influenciou consideravelmente os parâmetros analisados durante o armazenamento. Microbiologicamente as indústrias não estão em conformidade com o padrão estabelecido pela legislação vigente para coliformes termotolerantes, bolores e leveduras. Não foram encontrados valores para Salmonella sp em nenhuma das amostras analisadas. Sensorialmente a água de coco com 15 dias de armazenamento já se mostrou imprópria para o consumo humano, apresentando características organolépticas alteradas. Sendo indispensável à implantação e monitoramento de Boas Práticas de Fabricação para as indústrias que envasam água de coco. / The Brazil currently has a tendency to increase in cultivation of green dwarf coconut spread virtually throughout the national territory. The coconut water is used in popular culture instead of water, and also to replenish electrolytes in cases of dehydration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the storage process of green dwarf coconut water, commercially produced and bottled aseptically, the Hinterland by Paraiba and Ceará industries. It was collected, identified, samples from two industrial units on the date of its manufacture, transported to the laboratory in cool boxes with ice, where they were analyzed for the physical parameters, chemical, microbiological and sensory physical in order to assess the quality of coconut water after processing. The samples were stored in industries according to the 22 experimental factorial design with three replications of the central point , to quantitatively evaluate the influence of input variables on the responses , turbidity , conductivity, viscosity , pH , total soluble solids , acidity , acid ascorbic . It was found that the chilled coconut water should be stored at low temperatures, so that its life may be ten days. With storage time , there was a decrease in pH , vitamin C , electrical conductivity and total soluble solids for both industries , and the values of soluble solids are in accordance with the permitted except for experiment 4 . the pH of the experiments are not in accordance with the extent permitted by law, there were simultaneous increases in the industries analyzed for parameters of turbidity , viscosity , and total acidity , the binomial time x temperature significantly influenced the parameters analyzed during storage . Microbiologically industries are not in accordance with the standard established by law for fecal coliforms, yeasts and molds. No values for Salmonella were found in any of the samples. Sensory coconut water with 15 days of storage has already proved unfit for human consumption, with altered organoleptic characteristics. Being essential to the implementation and monitoring of Good Manufacturing Practices for industries envasam coconut water.

Para isto, foram realizadas as seguintes tarefas: testou-se uma nova metodologia de cálculo para o volume de água aplicado na cultura do coqueiro, que considera apenas a área efetiva de maior adensamento do sistema radicular, visando à domesticação de seu desenvolvimento num determinado bulbo molhado; controlou-se a temperatura do solo através da plasticultura, tendo em vistas redução na evaporação d'água no solo e, consequentemente, diminuição no volume d'água a ser aplicado; e avaliou-se o desenvolvimento inicial da cultura do coco, através das variáveis altura de planta e diâmetro do caule, para os procedimentos de manejo de água, solo e da cultura propostos nesta pesquisa. O experimento de campo foi instalado em blocos inteiramente casualizados, resultante de duas combinações fatoriais entre quatro diâmetros molhados (D| = 0,7 m, D2 = 0,8 m, D3 = 0,9 m, D4 = 1,0 m), delimitados por anéis de zinco que possuíam uma altura de 35 cm, sendo 20 cm enterrados no solo, e duas condições de cobertura de solo (coberto e nu), mais uma testemunha (4x2+ 1), perfazendo nove tratamentos com três repetições, totalizando vinte e sete parcelas. Para ambas as condições de cobertura do solo, os diferentes volumes de água aplicados nos diversos diâmetros de influência do sistema radicular não apresentaram efeito significativo no desenvolvimento da cultura do coco, no que diz respeito à sua altura e ao diâmetro caulinar, durante os primeiros 120 dias após transplantio. O procedimento de cálculo do volume de água aplicado promoveu considerável economia de água, com valores máximos e mínimos, respectivamente, de 93,95 e 87,62%, na condição de solo sem cobertura, e de 96,98 e 93,81%, em solo com cobertura. O isolamento da evaporação contribuiu para redução substancial (50%) no volume de água aplicado, ficando demonstrada a importância de se controlar a temperatura do solo em regiões semi-árias e a eficiência do filme de polietileno de duas faces para esta finalidade. / This research had as objective to study different possibilities of reduction of the water volume to be applied by localized irrigation in the dwarfish coconut crop in the Northeast semi-arid region, through a management of water, soil and of the crop. Thus, the following tasks were accomplished: a new calculation methodology was tested for the volume of water applied to the coconut crop, that considers only the effective area of higher concentration of the root system, seeking to the domestication of its development in a certain wetted bulb; the soil temperature was controlled by using plastic manta, purposing the reduction in the soil water evaporation and, consequently, decrease in the volume of water to be applied; and the initial development of the coconut crop was evaluated, through the variables plant height and diameter of the stem, for the water, soil and crop management procedures proposed in this research. The field experiment was installed in entirely randomized blocks, resulting from two factorial combinations between four wetted diameters (Di = 0,7 m, D2 = 0,8 m, D3 = 0,9 m, D4 = 1,0 m), delimited by zinc rings having a height of 35 cm, being 20 cm buried into the soil, and two conditions of soil covering (covered and nude), plus a control (4x2 + 1), resulting in nine treatments with three replications, totaling twenty-seven plots. For both conditions of soil covering, the different applied volumes of water in the several diameters of influence of the root system didn't present significant effect on the development of the coconut crop, regarding its height and stem diameter, during the first 120 days after sowing. The procedure of calculation of the applied volume of water promoted considerable economy of water, with maximum and minimum values, respectively, of 93.95 and 87.62%, in the soil condition without covering, and of 96.98 and 93.81%, in soil with covering. The isolation of the evaporation contributed to substantial reduction (50%) in the applied volume of water, being demonstrated the importance of controlling the soil temperature in semi-arid áreas and the efficiency of the two faces polyethylene film for this purpose.

A geraÃÃo de ResÃduos SÃlidos Urbanos (RSU) vem aumentando a cada ano no PaÃs, sendo a fraÃÃo orgÃnica normalmente responsÃvel por mais da metade da quantidade total de RSU gerada. Entre as alternativas existentes para o aproveitamento dos resÃduos sÃlidos orgÃnicos, destaca-se a digestÃo anaerÃbia, uma soluÃÃo atrativa, tendo em vista que hà produÃÃo de biogÃs durante o processo. Entretanto, para que suas possibilidades de aplicaÃÃo sejam mais abrangentes, à necessÃrio que o biogÃs seja purificado e posteriormente submetido a um processo de upgrade, a fim de que adquira caracterÃsticas similares ao do gÃs natural. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo sintetizar Carbonos Ativados (CAs) a partir de endocarpo de coco seco (Cocos nucifera), de coco babaÃu (Orbignya speciosa) e a partir de vagem de flamboyant (Delonix regia) por meio de ativaÃÃo com diÃxido de carbono em Ãnica etapa. As caracterÃsticas texturais das amostras foram determinadas por meio de isotermas de adsorÃÃo de N2 a -196 ÂC. Os maiores valores de Ãrea superficial especÃfica e volume de microporos foram obtidos para o bioadsorvente sintetizado a partir do coco seco, com valores de 1452 m2/g e 0,60 cm3/g, respectivamente. Foram selecionados os CAs de coco seco e de coco babaÃu para a anÃlise de suas eficiÃncias na separaÃÃo de misturas CO2/CH4 para aplicaÃÃo no upgrade de biogÃs. Para tanto, ensaios de equilÃbrio de adsorÃÃo dos componentes puros (CO2 e CH4) e da mistura (30% vol. CO2, 70% vol. CH4) foram realizados a 20 ÂC utilizando uma balanÃa de suspensÃo magnÃtica. A capacidade de adsorÃÃo de CO2 pouco se diferenciou entre as duas amostras, apresentando o CA de coco seco melhores resultados. Essa amostra apresentou valores bem maiores de captura de metano a pressÃes acima de 3,0 bar. Os dados experimentais foram comparados com os obtidos pelo ajuste do modelo de TÃth e da IAST (Teoria da SoluÃÃo Adsorvida Ideal) para os dados mono e multicomponentes, respectivamente. Os ajustes de TÃth foram bastante precisos, enquanto os da IAST se adequaram moderadamente. As seletividades das amostras para o CO2 em relaÃÃo ao CH4 foram determinadas e comparadas com a de outros adsorventes comerciais. O CA do coco seco apresentou resultados melhores que o coco babaÃu a baixas pressÃes, com valor de seletividade de 4,2 a 1,0 bar, indicando ser um material competitivo para a aplicaÃÃo proposta. / The generation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is increasing every year in Brazil, being the organic matter responsible for more than half of the total MSW generated. Among the current alternatives to the use of organic solid waste, the anaerobic digestion is the most attractive as biogas production occurs in the process. Nevertheless, to increase its usage possibilities, biogas has to be purified and upgraded, in order to acquire characteristics similar to that of natural gas. The present work aims to prepare activated carbons (ACs) from coconut endocarp (Cocos nucifera), babassu coconut (Orbignya speciosa) and flamboyant pods (Delonix regia) by one step CO2 activation. The textural characteristics were determined by N2 adsorption isotherm at -196 ÂC. The best results of BET surface area and micropore volume were obtained for bioadsorbent synthesized from coconut shell, with values of 1452 m2/g and 0.6 cm3/g, respectively. ACs from coconut shell and babassu coconut were selected to analyze their efficiency in CO2/CH4 separation mixture for biogas upgrading application. Therefore, pure component (CO2 and CH4) and mixture (30% vol. CO2, 70% vol. CH4) adsorption equilibria were performed at 20 ÂC using a magnetic suspension balance. The CO2 adsorption capacity slightly differed between samples, presenting the AC from coconut shell better results. This sample had higher methane uptake above pressures of 3.0 bar. The experimental data were compared with the fit of Toth and IAST (Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory) models for mono and multicomponent data, respectively. The Toth fitting was fairly accurate, while the IAST fit was moderate. The samples selectivity to CO2 over CH4 were calculated and compared with another commercial adsorbent. The AC from coconut shell presented better results than babassu coconut at low pressures, with a selectivity value of 4.2 at 1.0 bar, indicating to be a competitive material for the proposed application.

Comportamento de chamamento e evidência de feromônio sexual em Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) / Calling behavior and evidence of sex pheromone in Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae)

The coconut moth, Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae), is considered an important pest of coconut crop, especially in the Northeast of Brazil, which holds more than 70% of coconut production in the country. Its control is difficult because the caterpillars develop inside the flowers and fruits of the coconut palm, limiting the action of chemical agents. Thus, the use of pheromone for this insect management becomes quite promising. The objectives of this study were to describe the calling behavior of A. subrufella females and to verify the function of the pheromones involved in this process. The calling position, pattern and frequency of calling were evaluated. Female pheromone glands extracts were obtained and male and female volatiles were also collected by an aeration process, and were analyzed on a GC/MS to verify the presence of sex pheromones. The behavioral response of males was evaluated by bioassays using a Y-shaped-olfactometer containing a sample of female extracts. Analyzing the calling behavior, it was found that females of A. subrufella has only one calling position, and that this behavior has a peak between the second and fifth escotophases. Nor the duration of the calling or the number of calling bouts has changed over time, however, the beginning of the calling behavior was anticipated in older females, probably to avoid competition with younger females. Data showed that the best time to perform gland extractions and behavioral tests was between the third and seventh hour of the third or fourth escotophases. The chromatograms showed that it was not possible to demonstrate the presence of any female pheromonal compound, which was corroborated by the bioassays results, in which the male.s response did not indicate the presence of any pheromone. Thus, further studies are needed to elucidate the chemical structure of A. subrufella sex pheromone. / A traça-do-coqueiro, Atheloca subrufella (Hulst) (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae), é considerada uma importante praga na cultura do coco, principalmente na região nordeste do Brasil, que concentra mais de 70% da produção de cocos do país. Seu controle é difícil, pois sua lagarta se desenvolve no interior das flores e frutos do coqueiro, limitando a ação de agentes químicos. Com isso, a utilização de feromônio para manejo desse inseto se torna bastante promissora. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho foi verificar o comportamento de chamamento da traça-do-coqueiro, e determinar a função do feromônio sexual utilizado nesse processo. Foram avaliadas a posição de chamamento e o padrão e periodicidade da exibição desse comportamento. Os extratos foram obtidos de glândulas de feromônio de fêmeas virgens e a partir da aeração de machos e fêmeas. Os extratos foram analisados em cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massas (CG-EM). A resposta comportamental de machos foi avaliada através de bioensaios utilizando um olfatômetro em Y. Através da análise do comportamento de chamamento, verificou-se que as fêmeas de A. subrufella possuem apenas uma posição de chamamento, e que esse comportamento tem um pico entre a segunda e quinta escotofases. A duração do chamamento e o número de chamadas não modificaram com o passar do tempo, no entanto, o início do chamamento foi antecipado nas fêmeas mais velhas, provavelmente para evitar competição com fêmeas mais novas. Os dados demonstraram que o melhor horário para realizar as extrações e testes comportamentais foi entre a 3ª e 7ª horas da terceira ou quarta escotofases. A partir da análise dos cromatogramas obtidos não foi possível verificar a presença de compostos feromonais da fêmea, o que foi corroborado com os resultados dos bioensaios, em que a resposta do macho não indicou a presença de feromônios sexuais. Sendo assim, se fazem necessários novos estudos para evidenciar a presença e elucidar a estrutura química de um possível feromônio sexual de Atheloca subrufella.

Effect of Coconut Oil on Ulcerative Colitis in the Mouse Model

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease of the colon or large intestine that causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. In patients with ulcerative colitis, the body’s immune system overreacts and the body mistakes food, bacteria or other internal materials in the colon for an invading substance. The immune system attacks the material, thus irritating the colon. Limited knowledge of inflammatory conditions coupled with a narrow range of therapeutic options necessitates investigating the role of natural products. This study describes the effect of natural coconut oil on chemically-induced acute and chronic disease in mice. Ulcerative colitis was induced in four groups (5 mice per group) of 10-week-old female C57BL/6 mice by exposing them to 2.5-3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) for 5 and 29 days in the acute and chronic models, respectively. Coconut oil treatment was given via food containing 5% coconut oil to three diseased groups in three different regimens: one, preventive group receiving treatment prior to disease induction (14 d in acute; 28 d in chronic); two, simultaneous group receiving treatment simultaneous to disease induction; and three, regular treatment group receiving treatment after the disease induction –until termination of the experiment (14 d in acute; 60 d in chronic). Coconut food was replaced by the regular chow in the disease and water control groups. Clinical symptoms (diarrhea, occult blood, anal bleeding and body weight change) and the size of the isolated colon were recorded for comparison between experimental and control groups. Groups receiving coconut food displayed remissions in clinical markers of the disease. Improvements in clinical symptoms, histopathology, as well as cytokine activities were observed in both models, but the effects were more significant on the basis of standard error in the chronic model.

Aiming to evaluate the phenology of the coconut tree, an experiment was carried in the didactic orchard of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA. The experimental area consisted of four-year old coconut trees of green dwarf variety, propagated by seeds and planted at a spacing of 7.5 m x 7.5 m, irrigated by microsprinkler. We selected randomly forty plants for which we made every week phenological observations during the period of January to October 2015. We analyzed as following variables: plant height, length and diameter of stem, leaf n°14 length, emission of 2nd, 3rd and 4th raceme, number of living leaves, total plants inflorescence, average number of fruits with 5, 6, 7 and 8 months of age, total number of fruits and percentage of abortion in the raceme with 5, 6, 7 and 8 months old. Com o objetivo de avaliar a fenologia do coqueiro, um experimento foi conduzido no pomar didático da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA. A área experimental foi composta por coqueiros da variedade anão verde com quatro anos de idade, propagadas via sementes e plantadas no espaçamento de 7,5 m x 7,5 m, irrigadas por microaspersão. Foram selecionadas, aleatoriamente, quarenta plantas, para as quais foram realizadas as observações fenológicas semanalmente, durante o período de janeiro a outubro de 2015. Foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: altura da planta, comprimento e diâmetro do estipe, comprimento da folha n° 14, emissão do 2º, 3° e 4° cacho, número de folhas vivas, número de inflorescências totais por planta, número médio de frutos com 5, 6, 7 e 8 meses de idade, número de frutos totais e porcentagem de abortamento de frutos do cacho com 5, 6, 7 e 8 meses de idade. Aiming to evaluate the phenology of the coconut tree, an experiment was carried in the didactic orchard of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA. The experimental area consisted of four-year old coconut trees of green dwarf variety, propagated by seeds and planted at a spacing of 7.5 m x 7.5 m, irrigated by microsprinkler. We selected randomly forty plants for which we made every week phenological observations during the period of January to October 2015. We analyzed as following variables: plant height, length and diameter of stem, leaf n°14 length, emission of 2nd, 3rd and 4th raceme, number of living leaves, total plants inflorescence, average number of fruits with 5, 6, 7 and 8 months of age, total number of fruits and percentage of abortion in the raceme with 5, 6, 7 and 8 months old. Such tool has been used by companies to face the problems caused by solid waste, in particular green coconut waste, which is constantly among the material discarded by society (companies/ consumer). It is a typical tropical fruit whose fresh water is very benefic for human health, and its popularization has caused a progressive increase of its consumption. Following this stream of thought, this present work came up with an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities SWOT analysis on green coconut solid waste management at two agribusiness companies in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil, aiming to know the challenges and the potentials of this kind of waste. According to the approach of the problem, this work fits a descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative research. The data collection was obtained by a questionnaire and a structured interview, in order to evaluate the strategic posture of agribusiness companies through SWOT analysis, which is an English acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The SWOT analysis is an effective tool to analyze the internal and external environment of an organization. This tool contributes to locate the company at the environment in question and when well applied it enables the detection of mistakes, the strengthening of correct procedures, the avoidance of threats, and the bet on opportunities. The studied agribusiness industries have very similar profiles, such as a long business life span, and a strategy that extends the useful life of the fruit, by using its waste for the manufacturing of new subproducts. In both, the daily quantity of waste resulted of this process reaches approximately 20 thousand units of the fruit in high season, being necessary a focus directed at use and/or treatment of these waste. Further to SWOT analysis, it was ascertained that the agribusiness company A works through a defensive marketing strategy and acts vulnerably, in other words, unable of acting before this market segment, for it has decided to stop using the waste due to a lack of equipment and technology. On the other hand, the agribusiness company B has incorporated an offensive marketing strategy because even not possessing equipments, technology, and appropriated internal installations, it still insists on use and benefits of green coconut waste in its agribusiness. Thus, it is considered that the potential of green coconut waste management for the production of several subproducts reduces the impacts produced by inappropriate placement and generates profits in a short, medium and long term. Such profits being tangible and intangible, as the interest for sustainability actions is not only a matter of obtaining return on capital, but it is an important question in order to move on into business, since it is not enough to have quality on products and process nowadays. It is necessary to establish socio-environmental practices aiming the image of the company as the prevailing role on consumers buying decision / A causa ambiental, na atual conjectura, est? alterando o posicionamento das empresas que est?o praticando ou minimamente adotando a gest?o ambiental. Tal ferramenta est? sendo utilizada nas empresas para enfrentar a problem?tica causada pelos res?duos s?lidos, dentre eles os res?duos do coco verde, presente constantemente no material descartado pela sociedade (empresas/consumidor). ? uma fruta tipicamente tropical, cuja ?gua fresca traz muitos benef?cios ? sa?de humana e sua populariza??o desencadeou um aumento progressivo do seu consumo. Seguindo esse racioc?nio, o presente trabalho prop?s analisar os pontos fortes, fracos, amea?as e oportunidades an?lise de SWOT - no gerenciamento dos res?duos s?lidos do coco verde em duas agroind?strias situadas no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte RN (Brasil), com intuito de conhecer os desafios e potencialidades do aproveitamento desses res?duos. Do ponto de vista da abordagem do problema, este trabalho se enquadra como uma pesquisa qualitativa, explorat?ria e descritiva. A coleta de dados foi realizada com a aplica??o de um question?rio e entrevista estruturada sendo avaliada a postura estrat?gica das agroind?strias atrav?s da an?lise SWOT, que ? uma sigla oriunda do idioma ingl?s, ? um acr?nimo de For?as (Strengths), Fraquezas (Weaknesses), Oportunidades (Opportunities) e Amea?as (Threats). A an?lise SWOT ? uma ferramenta eficaz para analisar o ambiente interno e externo de uma organiza??o. Essa ferramenta contribui para situar a empresa no ambiente em quest?o e quando bem aplicada ? poss?vel detectar erros, fortalecer acertos, driblar as amea?as e apostar nas oportunidades. As agroind?strias estudadas possuem perfis bastante similares como: tempo de vida no mercado e por seguir uma linha de estrat?gia que prolonga a vida ?til do fruto com aproveitamento de seus res?duos para fabrica??o de novos subprodutos. Em ambas, a quantidade di?ria de res?duos gerados alcan?a aproximadamente 20 mil unidades do fruto em alta esta??o, tornando necess?rio um enfoque direcionado ao aproveitamento e/ou tratamento desses res?duos. Em rela??o ? an?lise de SWOT, constatou-se que a agroind?stria A opera com capacidade defensiva atuando assim com vulnerabilidade, ou seja, impossibilitada de atuar diante desse segmento de mercado, por ter decidido parar de aproveitar os res?duos por falta de equipamentos e tecnologias adequadas. Em contrapartida a agroind?stria B est? utilizando a estrat?gia de capacidade ofensiva de mercado, pois, mesmo n?o possuindo equipamentos, tecnologias e instala??es internas apropriadas, ainda assim, persistem no aproveitamento e beneficiamento dos res?duos do coco verde em sua agroind?stria. Assim, considera-se que o potencial do gerenciamento dos res?duos do coco verde para a produ??o de uma diversidade de subprodutos reduz os impactos produzidos pela disposi??o inadequada e geram lucro em curto, m?dio e longo prazo. Lucros esses tang?veis e intang?veis, j? que o interesse por a??es de sustentabilidade n?o ? s? uma quest?o de obten??o de retorno financeiro, mas ? quest?o fundamental para manter-se no neg?cio, posto que hoje em dia n?o basta possuir qualidade nos produtos e processos. ? preciso estabelecer pr?ticas socioambientais, tendo em vista a imagem da empresa como papel preponderante na decis?o de compra dos consumidores
