Error- related Negativity (ERN) is an event- related potential elicited by the commission of errors. It appears as a negative deflection peaking between 50ms and 100ms after an erroneous response. Previous literature demonstrated that individuals who suffer from either anxiety or depression display a higher ERN amplitude compared to a control group. It has also been shown that people with ADHD display a lower ERN amplitude. Based on these findings, we investigated the relationships between these three disorders and their effects on the amplitude of the ERN. We recruited thirty- one students at East Tennessee State University and gathered data on their level of anxiety, depression, and ADHD through completion of three surveys: the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and the ADHD self- report scale. Subsequently, participants were asked to perform a modified Flanker task while their EEG was collected using a 32- channel EEG cap. ERN amplitude for error responses was significantly higher than ERN amplitude for correct responses. In contrast with previous literature, no significant influence on the ERN due to anxiety, depression, and ADHD was found. Additional research on the topic with larger sample size and different diagnostic procedures may be necessary to further investigate the phenomenon.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a method of communication that utilizes the scalp recorded electroencephalogram (EEG). A BCI requires no movement, making it a viable communication option for people who are severely disabled. Most BCI research has focused on improving BCI technology through advances in signal processing and paradigmatic manipulations. Research has recently begun to examine the influence of psychosocial factors on BCI performance. Examining psychosocial factors may be particularly important for disabled people who have several co-morbidities. The purpose of the current study is to examine the hypothesis that participants will be more motivated in a free spelling paradigm than in a copy spelling paradigm. Participants completed copy- and freespelling tasks, order was counterbalanced. Motivation was measured after each task. Preliminary data suggests an increase in motivation after the second task regardless of which task was performed second. No differences were observed in performance accuracy between the two tasks.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology holds promise to restore the communication and control ability of individuals with severe motor disabilities (Wolpaw et al. 2002). An EEG-based BCI system that detects the P300 event-related potential (ERP) allows users to select items from a matrix consisting of letters, numbers, and function calls (after the method of Donchin et al., 2000) using brain signals rather than the brain’s normal output pathways of peripheral nerves and muscles. Our laboratory seeks to realize independent home use of P300-based BCI by severely disabled individuals. In an earlier study, we found that P300-based BCI performance (i.e., accurate classification) on test data was correlated with the test data and was not correlated with the training data (Mak et al. 2009). Is empathy the missing link in teaching business ethics? A course-based educational intervention with undergraduate business studentsAdkins, Christopher P. 01 January 2009 (has links)
Past approaches to teaching ethics have been rooted primarily within the cognitive developmental tradition, with the focus on developing moral reasoning. Recent studies in cognitive neuroscience and social psychology have challenged this emphasis, highlighting the primacy of the emotion in driving moral decision-making. This study proposed that empathy may be an appropriate construct for integrating both processes, and that an moral education intervention that focused on empathetic perspective-taking based on Martin Hoffman's work may prove effective in both advancing moral reasoning and empathy. This approach was applied using a quasi-experimental design with undergraduate business students (N = 181) within a semester-long business ethics course. It was predicted that the class section receiving the empathetic perspective-taking intervention would show more growth on both perspective-taking (Interpersonal Reactivity Index, PT subscale) and moral reasoning (Defining Issues Test-2) measures than the comparison groups receiving the principled moral reasoning approach. Results from repeated measures ANOVAs by group indicated statistically significant differences for the comparison group increases on moral reasoning (DIT-2 N2 score); no difference was seen in the intervention group on either moral reasoning or perspective-taking. The results, however, did indicated a significant difference by gender for the intervention group on one of the subscales, Empathetic Concern, with women increasing and men decreasing in empathetic concern. A discussion of the results offers specific suggestions for integrating empathy into business ethics courses, balancing moral reasoning with emotional engagement and addressing issues related to gender. Also, this study suggests the need for skill-based, context specific measures of empathy.

A Heart Thing to Hear But You'll Earn: Processing and Learning about Foreign Accent Features Generated by Phonological Rule MisapplicationsBennett, Monica Lee 18 March 2015 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on how native English listeners process phonological rule misapplications in non-native-accented speech. In Experiment 1, we examined whether listeners use information about a speaker’s native language to help them understand that speaker’s accented English. The test case for this scenario was word-final obstruent devoicing in German and German-accented speech. Results showed that participants did not generalize their knowledge cross-linguistically. In Experiment 2, we used a categorization task and an eye-tracking visual world paradigm to investigate listeners’ use of a position-sensitive allophonic alternation, the velarization of /l/, as a word segmentation cue in native English. Participants were able to use velarization as a cue during word segmentation, even though they also showed a later, post-perceptual bias to segment /l/ as word initial. Follow-up experiments will build upon these conclusions using German-accented speech as stimuli, which will have reduced or absent velarization of /l/ in word-final position. In sum, these experiments inform us about the limits of phonological knowledge about foreign-accented speech.

Distinct Mechanisms Underlie Attraction Errors and Agreement with CoordinationKeung, Lap-Ching 11 July 2017 (has links)
Previous research has suggested that attraction errors are not due to the proximity of the local noun and verb, as a more distant local noun can result in more errors than a nearer one (e.g., *The helicopter for the flights over the canyon are vs. *The helicopter for the flight over the canyons are; Franck, Vigliocco, & Nicol, 2002). However, the verb tends to agree in number with the nearer noun of a disjoined subject, suggesting that linear order can indeed play a role in agreement computation (e.g., The horse or the clocks are vs. The horses or the clock is; Haskell & MacDonald, 2005). In the present study, two experiments using a two-alternative forced-choice production paradigm and one experiment using eyetracking during reading directly compared agreement computation in the classic attraction configuration and when the subject is a coordinate phrase. The 2AFC experiments replicated both the lack of a linear distance effect in classic attraction and the presence of a linear order effect in disjunction agreement, which was also extended to conjunction agreement; when the second conjunct was singular, subjects frequently selected a singular verb. This order effect was also modulated by the presence or absence of additional material between the subject and verb. In the eyetracking experiment, a singular second conjunct both facilitated processing of a singular verb and inhibited processing of a plural verb. These results suggest that variable agreement with coordinate subjects is not a form of agreement attraction and that distinct theoretical treatments are required for two distinct phenomena.

The Effects of Predictability and Stimulus Quality on Lexical Processing: Evidence from the Coregistration of Eye Movements and EEGBurnsky, Jon 02 April 2021 (has links)
A word’s predictability has been shown to influence its processing. Two methodologies have demonstrated this time and again: eye tracking while reading and Event Related Potentials (ERPs). In eye tracking while reading, words that are made predictable by their contexts (as operationalized by the cloze task; Taylor, 1953) receive shorter first fixation times (Staub, 2015, for a review) as well as shorter gaze duration and increased skipping rate. In ERPs, the N400 component’s amplitude has also been shown to inversely correlate with a word’s predictability (Kutas and Federmeier, 2011, for a review). Despite the similarities, there is much reason to suspect that these two measures are reflections of different underlying cognitive processes, both modulated by a word’s predictability. We utilized the simultaneous collection of EEG and eye tracking data to investigate the differential effects of lexical predictability and stimulus quality on these measures. We found that these two manipulations had additive effects in the eye movement record, but yet only the manipulation of predictability influenced the N400 Fixation Related Potential (FRP) amplitude, with stimulus quality influencing neither the amplitude nor the latency of the N400. These findings provide no evidence for there being a role for predictability in early visual processing, and thus call into question the relative ordering of lexical processing effects laid out in Staub and Goddard (2019). Our findings also suggest that the N400’s underlying process is strictly temporally fixed and indexes the lexical processing difficulty left after there has already been a convergence of evidence towards the identity of the observed stimulus.
