This research study examines the relationship between conjunctive cohesion and relational coherence in students' narrative and expository compositions and writing quality (here defined in terms of teachers' ratings). Altogether 64 compositions were analysed using Halliday and Hasan's (1976) cohesion theory and Crombie's (1985) set of interpropositional relations. The results of the study show that both conjunctive cohesion density and relational coherence, as defined by the density of contiguous functional relations, affect perceptions of writing quality. Writers of low-rated narrative and low-rated expository compositions not only used a more limited range of conjunctives but their compositions manifested less cohesion density and contiguous relation density than writers of high-rated narrative and expository compositions did. / Linguistics / M. Thesis (M.Ed. (Language Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / This study investigates challenges grade 12 learners experience in essay writing in English first additional language (EFAL). Nine Grade 12 learners and 3 EFAL educators at Mothimako high school participated in the study. The method used in this study is qualitative method and it is used to get both teachers and learners experiences in depth detail regarding the challenges faced by learners in essay writing. Furthermore, the tools used to collect data are documents analysis, questionnaires, and observation. The study is underpinned by the Social Constructivism Learning theory. The researcher presented profiles of the school and EFAL teachers. The findings suggest that learners face a number of challenges with essay writing. The major challenges identified include the lack of resources, overcrowded classrooms, poor teaching methods and poor foundation skills of EFAL which led to poor grammatical competence. The study recommends that scaffolding be practiced when teaching the skill, conducive learning environments be created so learners learn the writing skill in a free, comfortable environment, support be provided in terms of writing materials, regular workshops be conducted to equip teachers with the writing skill, conducting workshops for parents so they could be aware how they could be involved in their children's education and lastly, encourage learners to work in groups if they are to learn the skill.

Lexical cohesion register variation in transition : "The merchants of Venice" in afrikaansKruger, Alet 03 1900 (has links)
On the assumption that different registers of translated drama have different functions and that
they therefore present information differently, the aim of the present study is to identify textual
features that distinguish an Afrikaans stage translation from a page translation of Shakespeare's
The Merchant of Venice. The first issue addressed concerns the nature and extent of lexical
cohesion in these two registers. The second issue concerns my contention that the dialogue of a
stage translation is more "involved". (Biber 1988) than that of a page translation. The research was
conducted within the overall Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) paradigm but the analytical
frameworks by means of which these aims were accomplished were derived from text linguistics
and register variation studies, making this an interdisciplinary study. Aspects of Hoey's ( 1991)
bonding model, in particular, the classification of repetition links, were adapted so as to quantify
lexical cohesion in the translations. Similarly, aspects of Biber's (1988) multi-dimensional
approach to register variation were used to quantify linguistic features that signal involvement.
The main finding of the study is that drama translation register (page or stage translation) does
have a constraining effect on lexical cohesion and involved production. For Act IV of the play an
overall higher density of lexical cohesion strategies was generated by the stage translation. In the
case of the involved production features analysed, the overall finding was that the stage translation
displayed more involvement than the page translation, to a statistically highly significant extent.
The features analysed here cluster together sufficiently to reveal that in comparison with an
Afrikaans page translation of a Shakespeare play, a recent stage translation displays a definite
tendency towards a more oral, more involved and more situated style, reflecting no doubt a

This research explores peer review in the academic writing of ESL university students.
It investigates the problem from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. Overall
findings showed no significant differences between the holistic coherence ratings
given to the original and final drafts of the group of students exposed to a process
approach to writing with peer review. Similarly, there were no significant differences
between the holistic coherence ratings of this experimental group and control group
on their final drafts. However, the findings of finer-grained comparative analyses of
each experimental group student's original and final drafts revealed both positive and
negative results with respect to changes made. The study also explores the changes
in terms of the peer review process, so attempting to analyse in more qualitative

Coherence breaks in first-year essays written by English second language (ESL) university studentsWatkinson, Hawthorne Janice 01 1900 (has links)
Writing coherent essays is evidence of a university student's discourse
competence and is important in terms of academic success. An analytical
taxonomy of coherence breaks {both topic-related and cohesion-related), based
on Wikborg (1985; 1990), was used to determine the frequency of coherence
breaks in essays written by first-year English Second Language (ESL) students.
A subset of these essays was selected for assessment of their holistic coherence
(HCR) by raters. The major finding of the statistical tests is that there is a
significant relationship between the frequency of coherence breaks, particularly
topic-related coherence breaks, and holistic coherence. Furthermore, the
relationship between the coherence of essays and marks awarded them was
established. Tutor intervention was also found to have had a positive impact
when draft and final versions were compared: in general, there was a decrease
in the frequency of coherence breaks, and a greater perception of coherence in
