A collaborative intervention on the processes of teaching and learning of students with intellectual disabilitiesPatricia Braun 23 November 2012 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation aims at examining the pedagogical strategies and educational support offered to students with intellectual disabilities. It also reflects and elaborates, collaboratively with the teaching staff, proper educational activities for the organization of the teaching and learning process of these types of students. To answer the first question we systematically participated as researcher in the students daily school routine in the classroom as well as in the teachers routines such as planning meetings, case studies and class councils. Methodology involved the ethnographic case study for Stage 1 and collaborative action research for the 2nd stage. In the first stage we went to the field to understand the types of processes used for schooling the three students with intellectual disabilities in different school years. This involved 15 professionals from the 1st segment of elementary school. From the content analysis of the records in the field journal, and the participants observation, in semi-structured interviews as well as classroom videotaping we were able to organize thoughts and analysis on intellectual disability and how it is understood. We also took a look at the relationships established with learning and the pedagogical practices involving the three students. In the second stage, we went to the field to collaborate with the participants starting with the education collaborative proposal, which is backed through historical and cultural references. The collaborative actions that the teachers have in the classroom as well as in the multifunctional resource room (SRM) were developed with a student named Ian who was the subject of reflections and insights on the process of teaching and learning. From the results of the study we observed that the presence of students with intellectual disabilities in regular schools is still a cause for estrangement. The format of the curriculum indicates how difficult it is to ensure teaching and learning processes for students with intellectual disabilities. Despite the differential profile in teacher training, questions about how to organize the teaching of that student were common in their accounts. With the collaboration established in the 2nd stage of the study, between the teachers in the classroom and specialists (the SRM and researcher) we observed that this expanded the initiative in the organization and activities in their specific areas of knowledge, considering participation and how the student could acquire this knowledge which was worked on. In this context, we realize the importance of complementarily teaching strategies to ensure teaching, participation, and student learning both in the classroom and in the SRM. These practices favor the student as teaching conditions for his learning came to be known and considered. The mediation which was planned purposefully and challenging for all of the school environments was a keystone for us to understand how to organize teaching for Ians learning. Under these conditions we observed Ian demonstrating his ability to produce complex and everyday concepts in different areas of the school curriculum.

VITIMIZAÇÃO VERSUS EMPODERAMENTO: AS IDENTIDADES CONSTITUÍDAS NO DISCURSO DE PROFESSORES DE ENSINO MÉDIO PÚBLICO EM FORMAÇÃO CONTINUADA / VICTIMIZATION VERSUS EMPOWERMENT: THE IDENTITIES CONSTITUTED IN THE DISCOURSES OF HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS IN CONTINUING EDUCATIONBrasil, Angela Medeiros de Assis 30 June 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / To build a transformative school, capable of promoting the insertion of its students within social literacy practices, according to Liberali et. al. (2006, p. 170), a joint action between university, school and community is required. In this context of action, the teacher is a central subject, despite the historical disempowerment that challenges them and turns them into a victim of their profession. Assuming that the profession is an important part in the definition of any individual identity, the objective of this study is to examine, through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Norman Fairclough (1989, 1992, 2003), the discourses that teachers participating in a collaborative intervention (MAGALHÃES, 1996; LIBERALI, 1999, for example) produce about themselves in order to identify how their identity practices are constituted. From a perspective of discourse as a social construct, through which participants build their social reality and themselves by discourse, the construction of identity is seen as a constant process and, thus, dependent on discursive realizations in particular circumstances: the meanings participants give themselves and others engaged in discourse. In this sense, identity is never complete, full, but it is always in process through discourse (MOITA LOPES, 2002, p. 34). To achieve the aim of this study, we provided a collaborative space for reflection between the The Lab for Research and Teaching of Reading and Writing (Labler/Federal University of Santa Maria) and a state high school, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The investigated universe of analysis is the faculty segment of this public school. In this universe, the corpus for this study was generated through reflective sessions, provided by the practice of collaborative intervention and composed of discourses of eight teachers of different disciplines. For the analysis, the linguistic data of the participants was segmented into analyzable units associated with the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005) and interpreted discursively using a theoretical framework centered on ACD. The analysis of the discourses of these participants provided textual evidence that their career path, the current work in the school, the teaching profession in their view and in the society s view construct their identities. However, the practice of collaborative intervention proposed caused significant positive effects, generating shifts in the professional identity of these teachers, such as a discourse of resistance to victimization within the teaching profession.

Multilingual preschool learners: a collaborative approach to communication interventionDu Plessis, Sandra 29 September 2006 (has links)
Multilingualism in classrooms is currently prompting debate and has significantly impacted on schooling in South Africa over the last decade. At present South African educators face the challenge of coping with and finding solutions to culturally and linguistically diverse urban school contexts that did not exist before. In many South African communities young learners, without any prior knowledge of English, are placed in English preschools. Preschool teachers have the demanding task of preparing these multilingual preschoolers for formal schooling in English, and, in addition, are pressurised by parents or caregivers who expect their children to be fluent in English by the time they enter primary school. A group of preschool teachers in a specific urban, multilingual preschool context expressed concern about multilingual preschool learners’ academic performances and their future, and requested advice and support. Consequently a need was identified for speech-language therapists to make their expertise available to multilingual preschool learners, as well as to their preschool teachers. To address this need, an exploratory, descriptive, contextual research design, incorporating the quantitative perspective, was selected to describe the specific educational context of multilingual preschools in the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD) and Sunnyside area. A descriptive survey was conducted and two survey techniques were employed to collect the data, namely a questionnaire and a test battery. The questionnaire was used to collect information from 32 teacher participants to investigate the needs and strengths of preschool teachers and multilingual preschool learners. The test battery was utilised to collect data on the language and communication proficiency in English of 30 learner participants. Results indicated that the teacher participants perceived certain personal challenges while supporting the preschool learners acquiring English as Language of Learning and Teaching (ELoLT). These teachers expressed a need for knowledge and support. They also reported that the multilingual preschool learners in the research context had to communicate in ELoLT despite it being an unfamiliar language. Some of the multilingual preschool learners displayed behaviours that could be indicative of negative influences on their self-esteem. The language and communication assessment revealed that many learner participants’ comprehension and expression in ELoLT were insufficient for learning and that they required support for academic success. In addition, the results support the claim that an integrated view of the multilingual learners’ communication abilities need to be established across contexts, by combining assessment strategies, such as naturalistic and structured assessment, as well as interdisciplinary perspectives. The results of the empirical research was used to propose a service delivery model for the acquisition of ELoLT in the research context. This proposed model may be an effective approach to provide supportive intervention to multilingual preschool learners with linguistic barriers to learning. In addition, initial stage intervention guidelines for the basic level ELoLT learner were offered in response to the needs of the specific community. These guidelines may provide a basis for the planning of intervention strategies to preschool teachers who were concerned about the education and future of multilingual preschool learners. / Thesis (DPhil (Communication Pathology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology / Unrestricted
