Essays in FinanceShore, Edward Peter January 2024 (has links)
In the first chapter, I investigate how external analyst forecasts influence managerial earnings decisions. Using shifts in analyst composition effected by brokerage mergers as a source of exogenous variation, I establish a one-to-one response of firm earnings to analyst forecasts. This response is driven by accounting accruals, consistent with short-termist earnings management. I find that the market perceives these accruals as costly to the firm. I present a model where this behavior emerges as a rational equilibrium, confirmed by a calibration that mirrors a one-to-one forecast-earnings relationship. Calibration outcomes align with real-world earnings and forecast patterns.
In the second chapter (co-authored with Harrison Hong and Jeffrey Kubik), we estimate the cost to capital of climate policy. Many US states have set ambitious renewable portfolio standards (RPS) that require utilities to switch from fossil fuels toward renewables. RPS increases the renewables capacity, bond issuance, maturity, and yield spreads of investor-owned utilities compared to municipal producers that are exempted from this climate policy. Contrary to stranded-asset concerns, the hit to overall firm financial health is moderate. Falling cost of renewables and pass through of these costs to consumers mitigate the burden of RPS on firms. Using a Tobin’s 𝒒 model, we show that, absent these mitigating factors, the impact of RPS on firm valuations would have been severe.
In the third chapter (co-authored with Lukas Fischer), we identify a source of peer group influence that is plausibly orthogonal to information provision, yet nonetheless affects economic decision-making: the shock to an equity analyst of their undergraduate college football team winning the NCAA Championship Game. We find that analysts’ forecasts respond positively to their undergraduate school’s football team winning the NCAA final. We then show that the shock of ‘winning’ spreads within an analyst’s brokerage, positively influencing the forecasts of their colleagues. Brokerages where the degree of this diffusion is greater have lower female representation in their analyst teams, as well as lower ESG scores.

A history of koshuisrugby at StellenboschHuys, Isabelle E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSpor)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the largest club in the world and the men’s
residence rugby competition is a component of that Club. The purpose of this study
was to document the origin, formation and activities of men’s residence rugby
(koshuisrugby) at Stellenbosch University.
The history of the University, the history of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club and a
little of the history of rugby in South Africa, and particularly at Stellenbosch, are given
as background information in the introduction to provide a global view.
The nucleus of this study concerns the development of koshuisrugby at Stellenbosch
University. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as
accurately and as thoroughly as possible.
Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific
information is minimal. Studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability
of primary sports history information. As this study is sport-historically orientated, the
historic-scientific method has been implemented. Preference has been given to primary
sources of information. These sources included minutes, annual reports, reports of
annual meetings and reports of special meetings of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football
Club, as well as interviews with people involved with the club. Personal
correspondence and interviews have also been undertaken with the students and warders
of the various male residences. Secondary sources of information included University
of Stellenbosch publications, books, articles and newspapers.
The introductory section provides a broad outline of the history of rugby in
Stellenbosch; the sports fields of the University and especially the various venues of the
rugby club are dealt with. At first, games were played on the Braak, from where they
were moved to the Vlakte, the Paviljoenveld and later to Coetzenburg.
The second chapter is devoted to the formulation of the problem, defining of the study,
method of research and the evaluation of the resources. The third chapter describes all the male residences playing in the koshuisrugby
competition. Their history, emblems and their results in the koshuisrugby competition
are discussed in detail. Two other teams are also described. However, they are not
resident on the Stellenbosch Campus: the Elsenburg Agricultural College has also been
discussed as they take part in the koshuisrugby competition although they are not part of
the University. Medies (the Medical School) is part of the University and plays rugby
in the koshuisrugby competition, but is not situated on the Stellenbosch Campus.
The fourth chapter deals with the koshuisrugby competition. First, the origins and the
evolution of the five leagues are mapped out. Other competitions such as sevens rugby
and the first years’ tournament are also described.
Since koshuisrugby provided the playing field for experimenting with rules, a section
has been written on rule changes. Referees had to know and apply al those rule
changes, so something about the history and evolution of referees has also been given.
Finally, sponsors are discussed because their participation helped to make koshuisrugby
extremely popular.
histories-wetenskaplike metode daarvoor gevolg.
is.

Factors that Influence Men to Coach Women's NCAA Division II BasketballJackson, James Calvin 08 1900 (has links)
This study identified factors that influenced men to coach women's basketball. The CCFQ, designed to determine relative importance of each of nine factors in career selection, was completed by 78 male head coaches of women's NCAA II basketball. Data was analyzed using univariate analysis with repeated measures, t-tests, and ANOVA. These coaches indicated fulfill need for competition, help female athletes reach full potential, and serve as role model as significant influences. Moderate influences included personal attributes of athletes, job attributes, and career advancement. Job availability, belief in own success, and income were not considered influential in career selection. Few differences were indicated between demographic sub-groups on any factor. Factors associated with well being of athletes had the greatest influence.

A Model Curriculum for the Graduate Preparation of Collegiate Basketball CoachesEvans, Marc S. 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of the study were (a) to examine selected areas of knowledge perceived by collegiate basketball coaches as essential for inclusion within a masters degree curriculum for collegiate basketball coaches, then (b) based upon these findings, to construct a model curriculum for the masters degree preparation of collegiate basketball coaches. A survey instrument, Questionnaire on the Areas of Knowledge Essential to Collegiate Basketball Coaches, was constructed and mailed for the purpose of collecting data from NCAA coaches. There were 252 instruments returned (58%). The coaches were asked to respond to topics which they perceived to belong within a graduate curriculum for intercollegiate coaches. The areas of knowledge were extrapolated from the 1995 National Association for Sport and Physical Education National Standards for Athletic Coaches. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests and paired t-tests were performed on the data. Major findings of the study led to the conclusion that the areas of knowledge (a) training, conditioning, and nutrition; (b) skills, tactics, and strategies; and (c) teaching and administration mean rankings were not significantly different from one another but were significantly different from mean rankings from all other areas of knowledge. The areas of knowledge (d) social/psychological aspects of coaching; and (e) professional preparation and development mean rankings were not significantly different from one another but were significantly different from mean rankings of the other areas of knowledge. The areas of knowledge (f) injuries: prevention, care, and management; and (g) growth, development, and learning mean rankings were significantly different from all other areas of knowledge mean rankings. Additional conclusions were that perceptions of collegiate coaches concerning the seven areas of knowledge were independent of coaching experience, division of NCAA affiliation, academic degree, gender, or the gender of the team they coach. A model curriculum was proposed for the masters degree preparation of collegiate basketball coaches. This curriculum, if implemented, could provide students with the academic preparation needed for a successful career in collegiate basketball coaching.

The effect of varsity athletics on midshipman performance / The effect of varsity athletics on midshipman military performanceHarvey, M. Christopher 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This study will examine the statistical effects of varsity athletics on Naval Academy Midshipman performance. Academic performance averages, military performance averages, conduct grade, and honor violation are analyzed with respect to Midshipmen participating in varsity athletics versus non-varsity athletics. Using hierarchical regression analysis, the expectation is that varsity athletes make up the upper-echelon of the Brigade of Midshipmen than non-varsity athletes. In the analysis however, no statistical significance is discovered with respect to varsity athletics, and that, consequently, varsity athletes perform to the same degree as non-varsity athletes. The results further outline the need for better prediction measures of Midshipman Performance. / Lieutenant, United States Naval Reserve

Readability of waiver of liability forms used in collegiate intramural and recreational sports programsWhite, Benjamin J. 28 May 2002 (has links)
Properly written waiver of liability forms can be an effective tool in
decreasing injury liability of intramural and recreational sports programs. In order
for a waiver to be effective, (i.e., held up in court), participants must not only read
and sign the waiver, but they must understand it as well. Readability, the ease of
which text can be read and understood, is an important part of a well-written
waiver.
Waiver of liability forms should be written at a reading level consistent with
that of the intended audience. On average, students read three grade levels below
the last grade they completed in school. The highest grade level at which waiver of
liability forms written for use in college settings should be the 9th grade. The main
goal of this study was to assess the reading level of intramural and recreational
sport waiver of liability forms, and compare them to the 9th grade level.
Nine NIRSA member schools and nine non-NIRSA member schools from
each of the six NIRSA regions were randomly selected for inclusion in this study.
Following multiple mailings, the forms received were scanned into a computer, and
readability was assessed using the Readability Calculation software (Micro Power
& Light, Dallas, TX) for McIntosh. A one-sample t-test was performed to compare
the forms to the 9th grade reading level. Forms were written significantly higher
than the 9th grade level (t[26]=14.53, p<.0001). An analysis of variance was
performed to assess possible moderating variables (e.g., NIRSA membership status
and involvement of a risk management team in writing the waiver). No significant
differences were found. Font size was also measured, and forms were found to have
been written at a significantly higher level then the recommended 12 point font
(t[28]=-2.88, p<.01). This study brings into questions the efficacy of waiver of
liability forms used in many collegiate/university intramural and recreational sports
programs in the U.S. / Graduation date: 2003
