Quality of the combined oral contraceptive pill (0.15mg levonorgestrel and 0.03mg ethinylestradiol) in the private retail pharmacies of Nyeri Town, Kenya. Results from a postmarket quality study

Kauki, Tom January 2015 (has links)
Magister Pharmaceuticae - MPharm / Background: The effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill as a family planning method is dependent on its quality. The quality of medicines on the healthcare market is established through postmarket quality studies. Methods: The quality of the combined oral contraceptive pill was established through the collection of samples from 17 (62%) private retail pharmacies in the Nyeri town of Kenya. Their quality was then determined through the assay of content of levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol and the levonorgestrel dissolution test at the National Quality Control Laboratory. Findings: 13 of the 17 pharmacies were licensed with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board while 4 were unlicensed. Femiplan® was available in all the 17 pharmacies while Microgynon® was available in only 4 pharmacies. 17 samples of Femiplan® and 4 samples of Microgynon® were collected. None of the samples was counterfeit or falsely labeled. All the samples passed the assay of content of levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol and the levonorgestrel dissolution test. Conclusion: Notwithstanding the fact this study provides a snapshot in time, it is reasonable to conclude that the combined oral contraceptive pill (0.15mg levonorgestrel and 0.03mg ethinylestradiol) in the Nyeri town of Kenya private retail pharmacies is of the right quality with respect to the quality tests of assay of content of levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol and the levonorgestrel dissolution test.

Age estimation of living South African individuals : a multifactorial model

Uys, Andre January 2019 (has links)
Age estimation in living individuals around the legal age of 18 years remains a difficult challenge, with limited options available. In this study third molar development was used, along with the novel method of anterior inferior vertebral ring apophysis development, to assess the age of living individuals and the probability of being 18 years. For third molar development, panoramic radiographs of 705 white and 563 black South Africans were scored using a 10 stage scoring system. Vertebral apophysis development of C2, C3, and C4 of 496 white and 478 black South Africans were assessed from cephalometric radiographs, using a four-stage scoring system. Likelihood values were determined for individuals in each sex and population group being 18 years, based on developmental stages. For apophysis development, the median ages for attainment of stages 0, 1, and 2 were below the 18-year threshold for all ancestry and sex groups, while stage 3 was also below this threshold in some groups. For third molar development, black South African individuals consistently matured earlier than white South African individuals, while for most of the stages the opposite was true for apophysis development. Differences between the sexes were also noted for third molar, but not for vertebral apophysis development. These age indicators were also combined by using a generalised linear model (GLM). The combined sample comprised of 165 females and 122 males aged between 15 and 18 years. Four additional models were obtained from data sets only containing data for third molar and cervical ring apophysis development respectively. The performance of all the models were quantified and compared using the Akaike information criterion (AIC) as an estimator of the relative quality of the statistical models and the prediction error as a mean square error value. The best performance resulted from third molar development, although the vertebral data adds a component related to skeletal development which may better reflect biological reality. These results show that cervical vertebral apophysis development is a valuable, novel addition to the assessment of age in living individuals. Both these methods are easy to use and can be assessed from standard and routinely used radiographic images. The developed models need to be sex and ancestry specific, as clear differences were noted. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Anatomy / PhD / Unrestricted

The Off-Design Modelling of a Combined-Cycle Power Plant

Naidu, Rushavya 26 November 2021 (has links)
The shift towards renewable energy has steered the focus of power plant operation towards flexibility and fast response which are more attainable through the use of combined-cycle power plants. These aspects are required to account for the fluctuation of the supply as well as the demand of power that is associated with renewable energy. Combined-cycle power plants consist of a gas turbine as the topping cycle, forming the core of the plant, and a Rankine cycle with a steam turbine as the bottoming cycle. A component called the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) forms a connection point between the two cycles. It uses the heat released from the gas turbine to produce high pressure and temperature steam to be sent to the steam turbine. The objective of this project is to develop a model of a combined-cycle power plant in Flownex which can be solved in off-design conditions in order to compare it to plant data. The verification of this model will show that Flownex can be used to effectively and efficiently model a combined-cycle power plant. The process of development of the final Flownex model was achieved using various additional software. Initially, an analytical model was developed in Mathcad (software used for engineering calculations). This software provides a tool for understanding knowns, unknowns and what is being calculated in the system. Manual calculations of the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) were done using heat balance equations. A temperature profile of the gas and water/steam in the HRSG was developed so that the duties of each component (economiser, evaporator, superheater) could be calculated. The overall conductance (UA) of each component was calculated in the design mode for the system to be evaluated in off-design mode. The development of an analytical model provided detailed understanding of the process of mathematical modelling used in commercial tools. Thereafter, a model was built in Virtual Plant, a thermodynamic modelling software for assessing plant performance. Virtual Plant uses plant design information and first engineering principles to predict plant performance. Finally, the Flownex model was designed. Flownex uses endpoint values (initial pressure and temperature and outgoing mass flow) and the UA of each component to calculate the characteristics of the flow at each intermediate point. For the single-, double-, and triple-pressure combined-cycle power plant systems, the analytical, Virtual Plant and Flownex models were compared. The results of all the models agreed closely with one another. The triple-pressure design and off-design Virtual Plant and Flownex models were also compared to plant data and it was concluded that Flownex was successful in modelling the design and off-design conditions of a combined-cycle power plant.

Návrh paroplynového zdroje elektřiny / Design of a combined cycle electricity source

Kadáková, Nina January 2020 (has links)
A combined cycle is one of the thermal cycles used in thermal power plants. It consists of a combination of a gas and a steam turbine, where the waste heat from the gas turbine is used for steam generation in the heat recovery steam generator. The aim of the diploma thesis was the conceptual design of a combined cycle electricity source and the balance calculation of the cycle. The calculation is based on the thermodynamic properties of the substances and the basic knowledge of the Brayton and Rankin-Clausius cycle. The result is the amount and parameters of air, flue gases, and steam/water in individual places and the technological scheme of the source, in which these parameters are listed.

Combined Tension and Bending Loading in Bottom Chord Splice Joints of Metal-Plate-Connected Wood Trusses

O'Regan, Philip J. 01 May 1997 (has links)
Metal-plate-connected (MPC) splice joints were tested in combined tension and bending to generate data that were used in the development of a design procedure for determining the steel net-section strength of bottom chord splice joints of MPC wood trusses. Several common wood truss splice joint configurations were tested at varying levels of combined tension and bending loading. The joint configurations were 2x4 lumber with 20-gauge truss plates, 2x6 lumber with 20-gauge truss plates, and 2x6 lumber with 16-gauge truss plates. All the joints tested failed in the steel net-section of the truss plates. The combined loading was achieved by applying an eccentric axial tension load to the ends of each splice joint specimen. Three structural models were developed to predict the ultimate strength of the steel net-section of the splice joints tested under combined tension and bending loading. The test data were fitted to each model, and the most accurate model was selected. Data from other published tests of splice joints were used to validate the accuracy of the selected model. A design procedure for determining the allowable design strength of the steel net-section of a splice joint subjected to combined tension and bending was developed based on the selected model. The new design procedure was compared with two existing design methods. The proposed design procedure is recommended for checking the safe capacity of the steel net-section of bottom chord splice joints of MPC wood trusses subjected to combined tension and bending. / Master of Science

Rovnoměrné a kombinované. Historicko-sociologický přístup k evropské krizi kolektivní identity. / Uneven and combined. A historical sociological approach to the European collective identity crisis

Horler, Vanessa January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse the current EU crisis from the perspective of international historical sociology. By re-reading Jenö Szücs' essay 'The Three Historical Regions of Europe' [1983] through the lens of the concept of 'uneven and combined development' [Rosenberg 2016], I argue that the countries that have assumed a prominent role in the EU as part of the Visegrád 4 coalition, have been shaped by two hegemonic powers to the East and West respectively. Supplementing the concept of uneven and combined development with a constructivist understanding of state identity, interest and action, I argue that the V4 cooperation is an act of emancipation from the East-Central European region against a perceived Western hegemony, triggered by the multi-level European crisis.
