The Influence of Social Media Technology on Generation iY's Ability to Communicate Face to Face in Their Academic CareersHenry, James H. 05 February 2015 (has links)

This thesis investigates how Generation iY students perceive that social media and / or texting technology has influenced their ability to track and comprehend the subtleties of face-to-face communication within an academic setting. Generation iY is defined as those born between the years 1982 to 2004. Also involved in this study are members of the faculty and staff that teach Generation iY. The theories being applied and examined in this study include, Postman's Technology Ecology, McLuhan's Media Ecology, and Ong's Orality and Literacy. These theories while addressing different aspects of technological change, all agree that the change is all encompassing with every advancement in technology. The study consisted of four focus groups. Two groups consist of Generation iY, and two groups of faculty and staff. Comparative analysis was utilized to point out the similarities and differences between the focus groups. This study has revealed that while Generation iY said that they prefer face to face communication; they are intimidated, fearful of judgment, overwhelmed, and lack the sense of responsibility that is inherent with face-to-face communication. They find social media and texting a more comfortable means of communication because it requires less effort and minimizes consequences. The quotes given by the Generation iYers in this study are in accord with what Elmore (2010), writes about them, Generation iY is isolated yet connected. Generation iY has an overdeveloped attachment to their peer group via social media. The faculty of Generation iY cites this as a major reason why Generation iY struggle with critical thinking. Weiler (2004), supports these concerns as she indicates that they gather information for the wrong reasons. They use critical thinking in order to prove their beliefs right to their peer group instead of trying to find answers to problems.

Broadcast Advertising Sales Education: A Comparison of Perspectives of Broadcast Managers and Broadcast Educators in the South-Central Region of the United StatesHoskins, W. Dale (William Dale) 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the skills and knowledge areas that are valuable for success in broadcast advertising sales from the perspectives of broadcast managers and broadcast educators and to identify and compare to what degree recent graduates of broadcast-communication, business, and other majors perform or exhibit these skills and knowledge areas as perceived by selected broadcast managers and broadcast educators. The opinions of the broadcast managers and broadcast educators were determined from responses to a questionnaire of fifty-six items. The questionnaires were distributed to the chairs of the departments or areas responsible for broadcast curricula at forty-two four-year universities as listed by the 1983 Broadcasting-Cablecasting Yearbook [Sol Taishoff, editor, Washington, Broadcasting Magazine] as offering degrees in broadcasting, and 126 broadcast managers who were randomly selected from the broadcast markets in which the forty-two educational institutions are located.

Junior Officer oral communication in the Navy and Marine CorpsLong, John M. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / Communication is an essential skill for every military officer. Their jobs are accomplished through communication as they motivate soldiers and sailors, who in turn physically accomplish the diverse missions of the military. Junior officers in the Navy and Marine Corps hold key and challenging positions in any ship or unit. While they rarely originate any major initiatives or missions, they almost always give the final order or direction. Therefore they must be able to accurately communicate both up and down the chain of command. While communicating comes easily to some junior officers, many struggle with it, and most have room for improvement. The USNA recognizes the important role that it can play in developing junior officer communication abilities. One of the Academy's strategic initiatives is Oral and Written Communications Excellence. The focus of this thesis is oral communications. This thesis will identify what type of oral communications are prevalent in the fleet, what the important communication skills are that a junior officer must master, and how the Naval Academy and other institutions can help develop these skills in the future leaders of the Navy and Marine Corps. / Lieutenant, United States Naval Reserve

Previous issue date: 2017-08-15 / This is a study about the use of Brazilian television fiction in Junior High and High School
classrooms. Our teledramaturgy presents and discusses the diversified Brazilian everyday
life. The telenovela Lado a Lado (Side by Side, Globo, 2012/2013) showed the Brazilian
modernization process during the first decades of the last century by focusing on the
everyday lives of the people of Rio de Janeiro. The story discussed territorial disputes in
the urban space, racism, African religion and culture, the integration of black people in
society, among other topics. We argue that this particular work offers important resources
for the debate on the question of black culture nowadays. It also allows us to reflect upon
the shift of the hegemonic place of speech in historical narratives, as in Lado a Lado the
narrators are the poor and black people. Our theoretical framework rests in the field of
Communication/Education as well as in the studies of the interfaces
Communication/Consumption. The media system takes part of the educational process,
as discussed within the field Communication/Education. The media and the school
systems are bound together with cultural consumption, a central practice in contemporary
life. Our study aimed to comprehend the communicational interaction between school
and the informal pedagogy of the telenovela. In the qualitative empirical study we
undertook, we tried to establish a dialogue between the discourses in the plot and their
reception by the teachers. We interviewed ten selected teachers from three schools in the
city of São Paulo: a state school and two private schools. From these interviews, we were
able to analyse the cultural consumption of these teachers and the ways they use the media
in their classrooms, with emphasis on television. It was our idea to investigate how media
consumption intertwines with the educational process by its regular presence in the
everyday lives of teachers and students alike. We discussed the pedagogical potential of
the telenovela and its approach within the school environment. We analysed how teachers
receive and reinterpret this type of content in their practice. We sought to reflect upon the
ways in which this work of fiction could complement the work of professionals who
promote the construction of knowledge and of the critical sense in the formation of their
young students. For most teachers, the school is the place for education, par excellence.
They have a predominantly functionalist view of Communication and they worry greatly
about the possible negative effects of the media on our youth. We understand that
education plays a leading role in the construction of knowledge, which closely relates
with the construction of citizenship. However, we argue that communication and cultural
consumption also play a part in this process. In the complexity of today’s world, we
conclude that reaching a balance point among the different social agents that form the
current multifaceted educational ecosystem constitutes one of the main challenges in
contemporary education. Entendemos a
No campo Comunicação/Educação,
