<p> This qualitative study explores the personal and intimate lived experiences of stroke survivors who suffer the comorbid emotional sequelae of Post Stroke Depression (PSD) and how it affects their rehabilitation and interpersonal relationships post stroke. By using Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT), the idea of Social Construction of Identity, the epistemology of Narrative Inquiry (NI), and conversational interviews (CI), with stroke survivors, their spouses/significant others, friends, and other family members, the aim of this body of research has been to take on the difficult task of observing how stroke survivors navigate the difficult and sometimes daunting path that all stroke survivors must travel as they attempt the reconstruction of their <i> self</i> post stroke. They face every new day with the knowledge of who they once were and who they are now. The person that they are now has become their reality.</p><p> Many stroke survivors regardless of the hemisphere in which the brain lesion occurs, suffer from some degree of the post stroke emotional sequelae, or a condition following and resulting from a disease, of post stroke depression (PSD). With the comorbid occurrence of PSD comes yet another challenge to their reconstruction process. The findings of this research study have remained consistent with the current research data and literature on stroke, stroke recovery, PSD, and aphasia.</p>

This dissertation has explored organisational communication in a college with the
following main objective in mind: To evaluate the functionality of organisational
communication. To realise this objective, relevant literature review was conducted. The literature
review focused, among others, on different types of organisational structures in
terms of how the different structures influence communication flow and power
dynamics in an organisation. Following this, different flows of communication such as
downward communication, upward communication, horizontal communication, and
diagonal communication were discussed.

D.Ed. (Didactics) / The inability to work in groups effectively and difficulties with discussion and decision-making were observed amongst pupils. This led the researcher to question whether pupils in South African schools are presented with opportunities to share in and take responsibility for their own learning. The literature pertaining to the nature, phenomenon and process of negotiation is briefly examined and fundamentals are identified. Negotiation is contextualized as a component of the educational phenomenon. An observation study of three std 7 classrooms in three different schools is undertaken in order to identify and describe all forms and modes of negotiation. Interviews with teachers and with pupils serve as cross-validation of these results. The results reveal that little negotiation of any nature takes place in the classroom; that teachers and pupils possess few skills and little knowledge in this regard; and that teachers perform the central role in the classroom whilst pupil contributions are not encouraged. As a qualitative study the final results indicate trends that may be generalized to similar classrooms. The concept of negotiation as a didactic phenomenon is now examined in depth by means of a literature research, with back reference to the findings of the field study. Key elements are identified and a conceptual presentation of classroom negotiation is made. The necessity of negotiation as an innovative, democratic and relevant perspective on the classroom is argued and a model for negotiated learning is presented...

Engaging identities: Globality and communicative practices in education for democratic citizenshipRao, Sangeeta V 01 January 2012 (has links)
This study critically examines facets of student identity and youth activism in the context of evolving notions of citizenship and democracy in a globalized world. I conducted this study to research the nature of the divide that exists between civic engagement programs at higher education institutions that have committed to educating students for active citizenship, and the civic practices and activism that characterize student engagement outside the confines of higher education institutions. I argue that there is a dialectic between the subjective component of the civic agency of students and the dormant notion of citizenship promoted through institutional civic engagement programs. Through focus group research involving students, I critically analyzed the evolving identity of youth through their communication, civic practices and meaning- making. Along-side, I conducted a case study of Project Pericles, a national civic engagement initiative within higher education to research whether and how this relatively new initiative has engaged with evolving notions citizenship and democracy, and specifically how global citizenship is addressed and incorporated within the initiative. By illuminating aspects of student identity that inform their civic participation in current times and revealing how a new civic engagement institutional program is communicating and shaping civic practices on campuses across the nation, the study makes recommendations for how best to bridge the divide between the two sides with the goal of shaping the democratic character of our society through empowered students and effective pedagogies and practices within institutions.
