Family Sex Talk: Analyzing the Influence of Family Communication Patterns on Parent and Late Adolescent's Sex ConversationsAllen, Evette L. 08 1900 (has links)
Family communication has the potential to affect a variety of youth behavioral outcomes including adolescent sexual risk behavior. Within chapter 1, I present past literature on adolescent sexual risk behaviors, family communication patterns, and the gaps associated with those areas. In chapter 2, I review previous literature on adolescent sexual risk behavior, parent-child communication and family communication patterns. In chapter 3, I present the method which includes a description of the participants, procedures, measures, and data analysis used. In Chapter 4, I present the results of the study. According to the results of the study, father-child communication is not a better predictor of adolescent sexual risk behavior. A higher quantity of parent-child communication does not lead to less adolescent sexual risk behavior. Participants with a pluralistic family type do significantly differ from laissez-faire and protective family types in regards to levels of parent-child communication. Participants with a consensual family type do have significantly higher levels of parent-child communication in comparison to laissez-faire family types, but not protective family types. Finally, in chapter 5, I present the discussion with a review of previous research (consistent or inconsistent with the current findings), limitations and conclusions for the current study.

Assessment of the Effects of Communication Training on the Adult Elderly and the Assisting Adult ChildGoldstein, Roberta Eisman 08 1900 (has links)
This study examined the effects of Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) on affection, communication, and relationship between elderly parents and their assisting adult children. Twenty-eight pairs of parents and children were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. Subjects took Quinn's Family Life Questionnaire as pre-, post-, and follow-up tests. Parents and children in the treatment groups attended a four-session STEP workshop. No significant differences were found on the 2 x 2 analysis of variance for repeated measures for the parents or adult children. Quinn's affection and relationship variables approached significance for the parents over time. His variable affection approached significance for the children over time, irrespective of group. Agreement approached significance for children in the treatment group. The results for the parents regarding affection suggest that the study may have emphasized their feelings of trust. Although the data for relationship approached significance, it was negative, indicating that parents in the treatment group may have reduced their interaction with their assisting children perhaps because they were learning new communication skills. The data for the children regarding affection approached significance, but it was negative, suggesting they felt free to question their feelings about themselves and their parents. The results for children in the treatment group regarding agreement may suggest that the study increased their awareness of areas of agreement with their parents. When the data for parents and children were compared, communication approached significance for the parents; that is, they felt more comfortable with their communication with their children than did their children. The variables affection and perception showed significance. The elderly parents perceived their relationship with their children more positively than did their children. Absence of statistically significant data may be explained because Quinn's Family Life Questionnaire was not sensitive enough. Analysis of covariance might have identified significant findings. Increasing the number of participants and informing them of the purpose of the study might also affect a repeated study.

Technology has, without a doubt, altered the social fabric of society. Mediated forms of communication have paved the way for more efficient production, and the vast amount of information available online has given people the opportunity to be more informed than ever. However, the rise of mediated communication has also presented a number of new threats. The current study focused on one of these threats, cyberbullying, and was interested in looking at how parents talk about and understand their child's cyberbullying behavior.
This study had the goal of uncovering if parents talk to their child about cyberbullying, and how they approach these conversations. The intent of this study was was grounded in the idea that parent-child communication is a valuable tool for developing belief systems, as well as making sustainable, positive and effective changes to behavior and perceptions.
Ultimately, parents do not avoid conversations about cyberbullying with their children. Parents structure these conversations with the intention of positively changing their child's behavior and beliefs. Specifically, parents talk about cyberbullying with their children as an effort to decrease the perceived risk their child faces if he or she participates in cyberbullying. However, these conversations are limited because they are grounded in misrepresented media coverage of cyberbullying which intensifies cyberbullying behaviors. As such, media producers must work toward presenting more all encompassing and wide spread coverage of cyberbullying as an effort to educate parents about the variety of behaviors which relate to cyberbullying.

Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, it is important to understand the sexual
behaviours that place youth at risk of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
and unwanted pregnancies in order to develop and implement appropriate health-promoting
interventions. Parents are in a unique position to help adolescents to have responsible attitudes
and behaviour towards sex, and to educate adolescents into healthy sexual adults.
The study aimed to investigate parent-adolescent communication and adolescents’ sexual
risk-taking behaviour, and the relationship between them. An exploratory, descriptive research
design and a quantitative methodological approach were used. One biographical questionnaire,
three measuring scales of parent-adolescent communication and one questionnaire about
adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour were used as measuring instruments. Data from 95
female adolescents who were attending the family planning facilities of two clinics in the
Metropole Region of the Western Cape were employed for the study. The collected data were
analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlations, analyses of variance and
multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed a high prevalence of sexual risk-taking
behaviours among adolescents in the Western Cape. Family environment characteristics,
especially the parents’ marital status, play a significant role in both parent-adolescent
communication and sexual risk-taking behaviour. Unexpected findings were some significant
correlations that were found between different factors of both general and sexual
parent-adolescent communication. Spearman’s correlations and best subsets multiple
regression analysis were performed on the data to ascertain which factors are significantly
correlated or associated with adolescent sexual risk-taking behaviour. In both statistical analyses, the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues was the most
important. A significant negative correlation between adolescents’ sexual risk-taking
behaviours and the amount of parent-adolescent communication about sexual issues illustrates
the positive influence of amount of parent-adolescent sexual communication on adolescents’
sexual risk-taking behaviour. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Met die groeiende MIV/VIGS epidemie in Suid-Afrika is dit belangrik om te verstaan watter
gedrag jong mense in gevaar stel om MIV of ander seksueel oordraagbare siektes op te doen of
om ongewens swanger te word om daardeur programme wat hierdie gedrag verminder, te kan
ontwikkel en implementeer. Ouers is in ‘n unieke posisie om te verseker dat hulle adolessente
kinders verantwoordelike houdings en optrede teenoor seks ontwikkel en om hulle op te voed
tot volwassenes wat ‘n gesonde houding tot seks het.
Die doel van hierdie studie was om die verhouding tussen ouer-adolessente kommunikasie en
die seksuele waaggedrag van jong mense te ondersoek en die verhouding tussen hulle te bepaal.

Die bevindings dui op ‘n hoë voorkoms van seksuele waaggedrag onder adolessente in die
Wes-Kaap. Gesinsomstandighede, veral die ouers se huwelikstatus, speel ‘n belangrike rol in
ouer-adolessente kommunikasie en seksuele waaggedrag. Onvoorsiene bevindings was die
beduidende korrelasies tussen verskillende faktore van beide algemene en seksuele
ouer-adolessente kommunikasie. Spearman-korrelasies en best subsets meervoudige
regressie-analise is op die data uitgevoer om te bepaal watter faktore betekenisvol met
adolessente waaggedrag korreleer of daarmee geassosieer is. In beide statistiese analises is gevind dat die hoeveelheid ouer-adolessente kommunikasie oor seksuele kwessies die
belangrikste was. Daar was ‘n statisties beduidende negatiewe korrelasie tussen die adolessent
se seksuele waaggedrag en die hoeveelheid kommunikasie tussen die ouer en adolessent oor
seks, wat beteken dat adolessente minder seksuele waaggedrag sal vertoon indien hulle ouers
meer met hulle oor seksuele sake sal praat.
