Wireless digital point to multipoint link utilizing wideband CDMA

Ambekar, Sanjay January 1998 (has links)
One of the proposed techniques for multiple access communications for the third generation is code division multiple access (CDMA). This has been shown to be a viable alternative to both TDMA and FDMA. While there does not appear to be a single multiple accessing technique that is superior to others in all situations, there are characteristics of CDMA that give it a distinct advantage over the other multiple access techniques. In CDMA each user is provided with an unique, orthogonal code. If these K codes are orthogonal and uncorrelated with each other, than K independent users can transmit at the same time and in the same radio bandwidth. The receivers decorrelate the information and regenerate the original transmitted signal. It must be noted that the term "Wideband CDMA" is used comparatively to the only existing commercial CDMA system, IS-95 which uses a spectral bandwidth of only 1.2288 MHz. This thesis examines and evaluates a good set of orthonormal codes (orthogonal and normalized to have equal power) and their application to providing accessing for a point to multipoint (PMP) stationary system. The correlation properties, design and constellation properties of these codes are investigated. The system model is then simulated using Systemview and then evaluated in terms of it's bit error rate, user capacity and Erlang with addition of users to the system.

Improvements to the UMASS S-Band FM-CW Vertical Wind Profiling Radar: System Performance and Data Analysis.

Waldinger, Joseph 12 July 2018 (has links)
Upgrades to the University of Massachusetts S-Band FMCW boundary layer vertical wind profiling radar for use in the VORTEX-Southeast campaign are discussed. During the experiment, the radar characterizes velocity and reflectivity in clear-air and light to moderate precipitation conditions. Data is presented from the experiment which illustrates system performance and typical environmental results. This thesis begins with relevant background information on FM-CW radar operation, scattering mechanisms, and other calculations relevant to results discussed. The system hardware is described, along with improvements and modifications made prior to and during the experiment. Collected data is used to demonstrate system capabilities, improvements made, and remaining challenges. Various environmental features in the case of clear-air and precipitation are identified in the dataset. Several examples of Drop Size Distribution (DSD) estimates are presented, and the possibility of separating vertical wind speed biases from rain data is explored. Finally, the validity of results of DSD estimates are discussed.

Perception of leadership traits: nonverbal communication, verbal communication, race of target and sex of perceiver

Fishman, Janet E. January 1970 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / A 2x2x2x2 study (N=l51 undergraduates) tested the effects of: (a) nonverbal communication (Strong vs Weak), (b) verbal communic ation (Strong vs Weak ), (c) race of communicator (Black vs White), and (d) sex of perceiver, on person perception. Overall results of both univariate and multivariate analyses indicated significant effects of: (1) nonverbal communic ation on the perception of "Leadership", "Empathy", "Wise-Man", and "Nice-Guy", (2) verbal communication on the perception of "Leadership", "Wise-Man", and "Nice-Guy", (3) race of communicator on perception of "Empathy", "Wise-Man", and "Nice-Guy", and (4) sex of perceiver on perception of "Leadership" and "Nice-Guy". / 2031-01-01

Some identifiable features of English language shortwave newcasts

Doherty, Robert Paul January 1973 (has links)
There has been a lack of studies and a failure to develop methodologies for short wave newscasts. Yet short wave newscasts are news source for journalists, writing on developments in various countries, and they are monitored by an unknown number of the North American public. This paper attempts to fill part of that gap with the selection of features common to all short wave English language newscasts, and the definition of such common aspects by categories that are quantifiable, valid, and reliable. The features are chosen to be useful in describing the style and structure of a particular service, but their primary value lies in their use as a/basis of comparison in studying other services. Five features (specification, news emphasis, immediacy, national philosophy, structure) are developed, defined, and tested in theory for reliability and validity. The features are then defined by categories. They are then applied by the use of a simple counting process to three services (Radio Moscow, Radio Peking, Voice of America) to determine if comparison is possible. The results indicate the three services can be compared and studied by the selected common features through the use of relative numerical values. Persons interested in short wave news reporting will be able to study such newscasts on a comparative basis through the use of the five selected features and their appropriate categories.

The role of branding in the success of the Economic Freedom Fighters( EFF)

Horwitz, Dean January 2016 (has links)
Much has been written about the political mediatisation of society, often through the lenses of the media, its institutional rules and processes. These studies have focused on either side of the debate, choosing to look at the media itself, or its influence on the political subsystem and vice versa. This has resulted in the formation of a gap in the literature around the issue of the relationship between media and governance particularly in the political branding area. This thesis focuses on political branding in South Africa and explores the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)'s "brand image" amongst voters in the last national elections 2014. The thesis thus is considered an exploratory study that uses in-depth interviews combined with primary qualitative and a preliminary secondary quantitative research. The data from the different research methods were thematically analysed by the researcher through the projective technique analysis of political branding in South Africa. The main objective of this thesis is to consider how the EFF used the media function within the current commercial media spheres to shape and influence political branding in South Africa. In addition, this thesis will look into how the EFF positioned itself on top of the current political dynamic in South Africa. The thesis ends with a number theoretical reflections and directions for future empirical research to explore the relation between media and governance in depth in dealing with South Africa as a society in transition. It also acknowledges its limitations.
