The relationship between the community and the school in a rural area.

Gaonnwe, Lebogang Edward 20 August 2008 (has links)
The focus of this research is the relationship between the community and the High School in rural areas. The strenuous relationship is addressed as a contributory factor towards learners’ poor performance at school. Rural areas constitute of several communities, which interacts with one another within a larger community. Particular attention is given to how several communities interact with the school in rural areas. It is the opinion of the researcher that every effort should be concentrated in bringing together all these communities and the school, to put into practice the concept of “tirisano”. The method used in this research is two-fold: Firstly it contains a literature study on the relationship between the community and the school. The researcher used this information to support his investigation and to make results based on factual information. Secondly, it contains information derived from the interviews. With the information derived from the interviews, the researcher was able to derive the respondents’ opinions on why the relationship is strenuous. The study recommends that learners should try their level best to improve this performance and to put the image of the school to where it belongs. Teachers should do the best job of teaching as possible and should involve other stakeholders like the church, business sector, political sector and the community at large. The study further recommends that the concept of “tirisano” and “ubuntu” should be seen being effectively implemented by the community and the school in rural areas. / Dr. M.C. Van Loggerenberg

Barriers to school-family collaboration: a case study in an informal settlement in Rustenburg

Raborife, Maria Mavis 16 May 2011 (has links)
M. Ed. / The aim of the study was to identify factors that hinder collaboration between the school and the families and developing strategies to overcome those barriers. Perspectives on schoolfamily collaboration and theoretical framework were also discussed. A qualitative investigation was explored. It was approached using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model. This model helps us to understand the complexity of the family as a system and how the individual child functions within the family and society. Data was obtained by means of individual and focus groups interviews with educators, parents and school management team at a school located at an informal settlement in South Africa. The study revealed that families, school management team and educators regard collaboration as vital for the learners’ academic success. The study also revealed barriers occurring at different levels, namely: the family, schools and community. Recommendations based on the findings were made: Develop involvement strategies that are appropriate to the school’s community setting for example informal settlements. Teacher training should equip educators with skills for initiating collaboration. Department of Education together with the school governing body should collaborate in empowering educators and parents.

How did they get there? The career development of senior women academic officers in New England community colleges

Miller, Darlene Gail 01 January 1996 (has links)
Few studies exist dealing with the career development of women to senior academic officers positions in higher education. As more women pursue these senior level administrative careers, there arises a need to better understand how they develop them. What is this phenomenon of career development? How do women develop careers in hierarchical organizations? How do traditional gender-roles influence career choice? The review of the literature comprises three sections: an exploration of the literature on the organizational structure of higher education and the career paths taken to senior academic administrative positions; an examination of the career development literature; and a review of the literature on the influence of role models and mentors on occupational choice. The methodology for this study was Naturalistic Inquiry. In Naturalistic Inquiry, a priori theory is used as guiding theory to help the researcher generate questions and search for patterns. To gain an understanding of the career development of the women chosen for this study, research questions focused on above questions. Six women participated in in-depth interviews. The analyses and synthesis of the data into assertions is presented in case studies. Many common themes as well as differences emerged from the data. These women labored to gain a depth of knowledge and breadth of experience in higher education administration. Much of their inclination to hard work was grounded in their desire to serve; they are committed to community college education. The dominant culture which places women in the private domain and men in the public domain significantly influenced the career lives of some of these women. Mentors were key to helping these achievers gain self-confidence and choose a path up the academic administrative career ladder. Finding the right fit, and positioning oneself were instrumental to developing a career in a hierarchical institution. Finally, obtaining the doctorate, while simultaneously growing intellectually and professionally, was also key to success. This study increases our knowledge on women's career development in the community colleges. Not every woman who pursues a career as a senior academic officer will act as these women. However, what we have learned can be applied to similar contexts.

Proposal for developing a school community program in the Remerton School

Unknown Date (has links)
"Since education is a process of development and growth throughout all life, it is necessary for man to realize that its forms and purposes vary from one environmental and societal condition to another. However, education is also a process by which the individual is trained to conform to the behavior patterns of society. In this society with its many values, some confused and conflicting, two values are basic: a belief in the potential worth of each individual, and reliance upon the method of individual and group intelligence in the solution of problems. When either of these basic values is challenged, democracy is threatened. Research shows that the elementary school's basic function is the education of its children for life in a confused and changing society. Also that this function requires close co-operation between the school and community. How to bridge the gap between the small limited community life of the Remerton children, who of necessity must also live in a school and other societies outside their community, provides an impetus for skillful planning and consequently the primary purpose of this paper"--Introduction. / "August, 1953." / Typescript. / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Virgil E. Strickland, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 64-68).

Planning with the local parent-teacher association for better understanding of the school program

Unknown Date (has links)
"It is within the framework of the objects of the Parent-Teacher Association that the writer of this paper has projected his thinking about what might be done to promote parent-teacher understanding. The main purpose to be served by the paper is, therefore, that of projecting a concrete plan toward improvement of the school through making proper use of the Parent-Teacher Association Local Unit. At Cherry Lake School, it appears that the Local Unit of the Parent-Teacher Association has not met in full its first obligation, viz., to project a program for building real understanding among the parents and teachers concerned. Without attempting to fix blame on either parents or teachers, the writer, within the limits of the paper, will analyze the situation briefly and project in as concrete a form as is possible the next steps that might be taken. In other words, the focus of the paper will be that of projecting a concrete yet flexible plan that will be useful in promoting cooperative efforts on the part of parents and teachers during the school year 1955-56"--Introduction. / "August, 1955." / Typescript. / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: W. Edwards, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 23-24).
