Compaction of soil by a vibratory roller: a theoretical description

This study models the compaction of soil by a vibratory roller compactor and examines changes to current designs that may provide more efficient compaction. The modeling of the soil differs from previous analyses of the compaction process in its use of a distributed-parameter characterization of the soil mass and in the application of nonlinear constitutive relations that predict the continuous evolution of residual stresses in the soil. The model was used to determine whether compactor performance might be improved by changes in the forward speed of the compactor or by redistribution of the weight of the frame. No improvement was found to occur. The model was also used to estimate the effects of varying the frequency of vibration to match the evolutionary changes in soil properties during compaction. Hardly any improvement over operation at constant frequency was indicated, but this finding may reflect the tendency of the model to underestimate the rate of stiffening in the soil. / Master of Science

Development of a volumetric strain influence ground improvement prediction model with special reference to impact compaction

Aubrey Berrangé, a South African roads engineer, invented the impact compactor in 1949 with the intention of achieving improved compaction to greater depths than possible with conventional equipment available at the time. The aim of this dissertation is to present a simple prediction model for the profile of improvement in the ground, using surface settlement as the main input parameter. The model is based on the information reviewed, observation of field data and a static numerical analysis. For simplicity sake, no attempt is made to predict the energy requirement to achieve the input value of settlement. The model is then verified on fifteen impact compaction profiles at six different sites. A 2 ton-meter dropping mass compactor was also used in the verification process with reasonable success. In addition, the model was tested against comprehensive testing performed at a dynamic compaction site with very promising results. The method is also shown to give acceptable results for prediction of density increase during a vibratory compaction trial. Student Number : 0218148W - MSc Dissertation - School of Civil Engineering - Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment / Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is becoming a popular form of concrete usage in a range of applications throughout the world. This investigation considers the development of the technology and use of SCC. Importantly, the investigation aims to highlight the opportunities for using SCC in South Africa. A mixture design model is proposed and has been found to work well using local materials. The advantage of this model is the simplicity and the adaptability to any aggregate type. This method should be more acceptable to SCC producers who do not have special facilities and testing equipment An overview concerning concrete rheology is included to explain the mechanisms used to describe the flow and deformation of both the concrete and mortar mixtures. Included is a comparison between concrete, mortar and paste rheology. The Tattersall Two Point Tester was used to measure the shear resistance at two shear deformation rates. From the test results it was found that SCC can be made using South African materials and that it is possible to design a mixture with a lower cementitious content. The results from the Tattersall Two Point Tester gave additional information about the flowability of SCC.
