Cognition and inquiry : the pragmatics of conditional reasoning

Oaksford, Michael Robert January 1989 (has links)
This thesis reports the results of both normative and empirical investigations into human conditional reasoning, i.e. reasoning using if ... then and related constructions. Previous empirical investigations have concentrated on experimental paradigms like Wason's Selection Task, where subjects must assess evidence relevant to the truth or falsity of a conditional rule. Popperian falsification provided the normative theory by which to assess errorful behaviour on these tasks. However, it is doubtful whether this is an appropriate normative theory from which to derive a competence model of human reasoning abilities. The relationship between normative theory and competence model need not be direct, no more than the relationship between competence model and performance needs to be. However, research in this area has imported a theory directly into individual psychology from the philosophy of science. On the apparently orthodox assumption of directness, continued adherence to this import may stand in need of re-assessment in the light of the quite radical descriptive inadequacy of falsification as a model of rational scientific inquiry. However, this model also possesses the virtue of relating the interpretation of the rule directly to the normative task strategy. Hence, this thesis has two aims: first, to retain the virtue of a direct relation between normative task strategy and interpretation while simultaneously offering a competence model which is consistent with more recent and descriptively adequate accounts of the process of scientific inquiry. In Part I, this will involve introducing a semantic theory (situation semantics) and showing that the process of inquiry implicit in this semantic theory is consistent with recent normative conceptions in the philosophy of science. The second aim is to show that the competence model derived in Part I can provide a sound rational basis for subjects' observed patterns of reasoning in conditional reasoning tasks. In Part II, chapter 5, the data obtained from the Wason Selection Task using only affirmative rules is discussed and the behaviour observed rationally reconstructed in terms of the competence model of Part I. A central concept of that model is partial interpretation (motivated by concerns of context sensitivity). Prima facie evidence for partial interpretation is provided by the observation of defective truth tables. However, in conditional reasoning experiments using negated constituents, this evidence has been interpreted differently. A subsidiary aim of Part II (which will constitute the largest section of this thesis) therefore concerns the empirical demonstration of the consistency of this data with the competence model.

Automatic Creation of Researcher’s Competence Profiles Based on Semantic Integration of Heterogeneous Data sources

Khadgi, Vinaya, Wang, Tianyi January 2012 (has links)
The research journals and publications are great source of knowledge produced by the virtue of hard work done by researchers. Several digital libraries have been maintaining the records of such research publications in order for general people and other researchers to find and study the previous work done in the research field they are interested in. In order to make the search criteria effective and easier, all of these digital libraries keep a record/database to store the meta-data of the publications. These meta-data records are generally well design to keep the vital records of the publications/articles, which has the potential to give information about the researcher, their research activities, and hence the competence profile. This thesis work is a study and search of method for building the competence profile of researchers’ base on the records of their publications in the well-known digital libraries. The publications of researchers publish in different publication houses, so, in order to make a complete profile, the data from several of these heterogeneous digital libraries sources have to be integrated semantically. Several of the semantic technologies were studied in order to investigate the challenges of integration of the heterogeneous sources and modeling the researchers’ competence profile .An approach of on-demand profile creation was chosen where user of system could enter some basic name detail of the researcher whose profile is to be created. In this thesis work, Design Science Research methodology was used as the method for research work and to complement this research method with a working artifact, scrum- an agile software development methodology was used to develop a competence profile system as proof of concept.

A Competency Perspective on the Occupational Network (O* Net)

Fahrenbach, Florian, Kaiser, Alexander, Schnider, Andreas January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model which integrates the well-established US-based occupational information network (O*Net) into a competence perspective. Taking serious claims about lifelong learning, one of the biggest challenges is the assessment of tacit knowledge and competences. To tackle this challenge, we depart from four well-established competences (personal competence, social competence, methodic competence and domain competence), and integrate descriptors from the O*Net. We argue that learning outcomes (what a person should be able to do) can be made comparable and accessible when linking them with the descriptors from the O*Net. This approach is in line with the European Qualification Framework (EQF), that aims at establishing comparability of learning outcomes within the European Union and relies on theories linking individual to organizational learning.

Modelo de competências digitais em educação a distância : MCompDigEAD um foco no aluno

Silva, Kétia Kellen Araújo da January 2018 (has links)
As students face rapid changes in Distance Learning Education (DLE) mediated by Digital Technologies (DT), they are required to have an increasingly broad set of skills that supports the needs of learning exclusively through online resources. Therefore, the present thesis proposes the construction and validation of a Model of Digital Competences in Distance Learning Education entitled MCompDigEAD, with a focus on the student of this modality. It is understood that the model is a form of establishing a relationship by analogy with reality in a simplified form, being a figurative system (Behar et al., 2009). It is an exploratory-descriptive research, with a qualitative approach performed through two stages. In the first, the mapping and validation of digital competences to be integrated into MCompDigEAD. This mapping was developed through analysis and comparison between digital competences of the theoretical reference and mapped through case studies with DLE students In the second stage, the construction and validation of the MCompDigEAD was performed, using the following procedures, outlined throughout this research, 1) Conception; 2) Planning; 3) Modeling and 4) Validation. As results, a Digital Competence Model was obtained in DLE, composed of three Digital Competences: Digital Literacy, Critical Digital Literacy and Digital Fluency, fourteen specific skills, detailed through the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA), totaling 328 elements. Each specific competency has three levels of proficiency, 1) Initial, 2) Intermediate and 3) Advanced with example of use cases. MCompDigEAD is a model to guide and assist learning processes in ODL by integrating Digital Technologies in a competency perspective. It can serve as a reference and be adapted according to the profile of students and institutions, thus constituting an instrument that supports the identification of digital competences in educational contexts at a distance. Systém rozvoje kompetencí v ČSOB a.s. / The system of development of competencies in CSOB a.s.

Vaňasová, Miroslava January 2009 (has links)
This diploma thesis describes and evaluates the contemporary development of managers' competencies in CSOB. Simultaneously, the goal is to find out how satisfied they are with the current situation. I came to the conclusion that the managers exploit methods for their self-development which do not belong to their favourite ones. The managers do not think that they are familiar with the observed competencies at the optimal level, which was based on their self-evaluation. Hence, I would suggest to concentrate on the preferred methods and to try to optimize the system of the development from the point of view of managers' preferences. Thanks to this suggestion employees' satisfaction and thereby also the efficiency of the whole system would arise.
