Prevalence of traditional Chinese medicine and other complementary and alternative medicine use among Chinese cancer patients in British Columbia, Canada

Ferro, Mark Anthony 23 August 2006
Purpose: Little is known about the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in ethnic populations with cancer living in Canada. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and predictors of TCM/CAM use in newly diagnosed Chinese cancer patients who were starting cancer treatments.
Patients and Methods: A consecutive sample of newly diagnosed Chinese cancer patients treated at the British Columbia Cancer Agency over a four month period was surveyed. During admission, the study questionnaire was distributed along with other registration forms and anonymously returned in well-labeled boxes. A bilingual Chinese interpreter was available to answer any questions potential participants might have had. The 15-item questionnaire focused on TCM/CAM use, socio-demographics, and medical and cultural factors.
Results: Ninety-one patients completed the questionnaire. The majority of respondents (90%) were born outside of Canada and 64% completed the questionnaire in Chinese. TCM/CAM was used by 44% of respondents. Herbal remedies, vitamins/minerals, and prayer were the most commonly used therapies. In the bivariate analysis, factors predicting TCM/CAM use were prior TCM/CAM use (p < 0.001), having received chemo/radiotherapy (p = 0.021), female sex (p = 0.015), immigrant status (p = 0.040), and reporting a non-official language most frequently used at home (p = 0.018). Following multivariate analysis, it was found that prior CAM use (p < 0.001), lower income (p = 0.043), and immigrant status (p = 0.030) were associated with TCM/CAM use.
Conclusion: TCM/CAM use in newly diagnosed Chinese cancer patients is very common and results are comparable to previous studies in other populations. Healthcare practitioners must become aware of the widespread use of CAM and engage discussions about CAM use with their patients, especially those of a specific ethno-cultural group who may be less acculturated to Western society.

The Perceptions and Experiences of Acupuncture users: A New Zealand Perspective

Jakes, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is now widespread and endeavours are increasingly being made to incorporate CAM into conventional healthcare and move towards Integrative Medicine (IM). To date research has primarily focused on the prevalence of use, and safety and efficacy of CAM; less is known about patients' experiences of and reasons for using specific therapies. While therapeutically diverse, it has been suggested that many CAM modalities share mutually referential ideologies and that people who use them may be motivated to do so by specific health beliefs. This study focuses on traditional acupuncture in a New Zealand context and investigates users' experiences and perceptions of the therapy, and discusses how personal health beliefs influence usage. A systematic review of relevant international qualitative research informed the main study, which was carried out using an interpretive phenomenological methodology (Heidegger's approach). Data was gathered from interviews with 12 participants who had recently received treatment from traditionally trained (non-biomedical) acupuncturists. Thematic analysis suggested that acupuncture was often sought for health conditions (typically of a chronic and benign nature) that are difficult to treat conventionally. Whereas initial access was primarily motivated by ineffective biomedical treatment, personal health beliefs-particularly subscription to holistic and vitalistic ideologies-often inspired more extensive and ongoing use. The therapeutic encounter was interpreted to contain many elements-other than needling-integral to treatment. Outcomes were perceived to be wide ranging, personal and necessarily subjective, and included the relief of symptoms, increased well-being, and changes to understandings and health behaviours. It is concluded that the attraction of acupuncture for patients and many of its perceived benefits lie in therapeutic components that are ultimately embedded in Chinese medicine (holistic) theories of health. A more pluralistic schema for assessing evidence may be necessary to acknowledge treatment outcomes that are meaningful to patients, and to accommodate the divergent ontologies and practice models of acupuncture, other CAMs and biomedicine. Increased interdisciplinary cooperation and communication is suggested as a means to improve patient safety and satisfaction and as a scenario for moving forward with IM.

Tondatti, Paula Chadi. January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: A child's stay in hospital arouses anxiety due to the possibility of surprise, the unknown, pain, loss of autonomy, and the perception of one's very frailty in face of hospitalization and disease. Concerning the child, any change in health needs makes cirumstances more difficult and demands a professional attitude towards his/her role in the process of health and disease. Music is viewed as an important communication strategy and entertainment to provide care for the child in various features such as pain relief, acceptance of hospitalization, link development, anxiety reduction, trauma recovering and reduction of stay in hospital, favoring interdisciplinarity, growth, and socialization. Getting into this perspective, this study aims at improving such a critical environment as the ICU, trying to find out any benefit deriving from such a therapy within that context. It is a longitudinal randomized clinical study which assessed the clinical outcome before, during, and after the intervention of music in lactentes admitted to pediatric ICU of Hospital Regional de Assis/HRA-SP. The study at issue aimed at assessing the effects of musical intervention in the clinical parameters of children in pediatric ICU putting forward the hypothesis that such a musical intervention brings about positive clinical changes in such lactentes staying in that environment. One found out that music brings about some signs such as improvement in the severness of the disease, pain relief, positive emotional perception identified after and during each therapy session. Music is recommended to be used in hospitals, including pediatric ICU, as a communication facilitator among the clinical staff, the family and the child, as a resource to provide relaxation, pain relief, clinical condition improvement and as a factor capable of eliciting positive emotional response. However, some gaps still have to be filled... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness against Candida albicans of fraction enriched in phenolic (FE) of Buchenavia leaves tomentosa beyond substances gallic acid (GA), corilagin, kaempferol and vitexin, phenolic substances previously detected in the aqueous extract of B. tomentosa, free or encapsulated in cyclodextrins. Microdilution test with standard strains and clinical isolates besides the chemical analysis of FE by mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) were carried out. The acetone extract was the FE and AG was the most efficient phenolic substance against C. albicans. The effect of FE and AG against the virulence factors of C. albicans was also analyzed. FE and AG were encapsulated into 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and had their chemical analyses made. MICs and MFCs of encapsulated have been determined. Solely the GA encapsulated had its anti-biofilm and in vivo action verified. Cytotoxicity of free and encapsulated GA and FE were determined. The MIC ranged from 5,0 to 0,625 mg/ml for GA and 2,5 and 0,019 mg/ml for FE. MFCs values were not found. All phenolics molecules were found in FE by ESI/MS. AG and FE had a direct effect on virulence factors of C. albicans, except on the secretion of exoenzymes. There was no difference in the CIM between free and encapsulated substances. The anti-biofilm effect was better in GA encapsuladed than its free form. A clinical improvement of sugestives erythematous lesions on the palate of rats was observed, although the hyphaes were not found in the palatar mucosa. The cytotoxicity for all substances was moderated. After the analysis, we observed the anti-C. albicans effect of GA and FE. AG encapsulated showed promising anti-biofilm effect and apparent clinical improvement in lesions suggestive of erythematous candidiasis in palatar mucosa of rats. / FAPESP: 2012/16805-5 / FAPESP: 2013/00037-1 / CAPES - PDSE: 99999.000217/2014-00
