Improving the Management of Obesity in a Rural Community

Jones, Ashley May January 2015 (has links)
Background: Nearly half of the US population is overweight or obese, carrying with them a higher risk for morbidity and mortality and rising healthcare costs. Rural women are disproportionately affected, with higher rates of obesity, obesity-related chronic diseases, and poorer health outcomes (Befort, Nazir, & Perri, 2012; Penney, Rainham, Dummer & Kirk, 2014). There may be several factors. In general, rural health systems are more isolated, with a lack of healthcare resources including quality providers, technology, and public health services (IOM, 2009). Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to assess how obesity is managed in women residing in one rural community - Ritzville, Washington. Methods and Aims: Charts of all women ≥ 18 years of age receiving care at Hometown Family Medicine clinic (HTFM) were queried for a diagnosis of obesity. The prevalence of obesity in this group was calculated. Of those identified as obese, thirty charts were selected at random and reviewed. The following was determined: 1) Prevalence of chronic disease in adult women who receive care at HTFM; and 2) The management of obesity at HTFM compared with current evidence-based guidelines. This was followed by a community assessment to determine the resources available for the prevention and treatment of obesity in Ritzville, WA. Results: The prevalence of obesity (36.9%) and chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes type 2, dyslipidemia, and heart disease) in the population studied were found to be significantly higher than both state and national averages. Due to a lack of basic resources, (access to weight loss specialties, exercise facilities, healthy foods, etc.) management of obesity in Ritzville, WA may be challenging. Findings from this study helped to inform resource allocation and identified opportunities to improve the management of obesity based on current practice guidelines. Primary health care may be the only opportunity to promote healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes in this vulnerable population. Action needs to be taken or the burden of obesity will continue to rise.

The Impact of the Implementation of a Title I Comprehensive Plan on a Select Title I Rural School Located in the Southeastern Region of the United States

Richardson, Tavis 21 May 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the impact of a Title I Comprehensive Plan on factors that affect the learning and the success of a Title I school, such as administrative support, student discipline, parental engagement, professional development, class size, and attendance. Annual District Parent and Teacher Surveys, INow attendance reports, INOW discipline reports, ACT Aspire Testing data, and Ident-A-Kit school signature documents were analyzed and observations were made in order to acquire information concerning the success of the Title One Comprehensive Plan in a Title I school. This type of research involves emerging questions and procedures, data analysis inductively building from particulars to general themes, and the researcher interpreting the data (Creswell, 2008). The results of this study aims to influence and assist school leaders and teachers’ efforts to promote students’ academic success within Title I environments. The findings from this research will provide teachers, students and educational leaders with an opportunity for understanding how students in Title I identified school succeed. One elementary school in the eastern region of the United States was used in the study. This school is pre-kindergarten through fifth school that has been a Title I for several years. The school serves over 750 students. The time frame for this research project was two months. The findings of this study add supporting evidence to the influence of the independent variables. The results of this study show that the researcher identified four dominant themes that appeared during the study. Professional development, student attendance, class size, and high expectation on student achievement were the common themes that support the importance of the independent variables on factors that have an impact on the success of the Title I Comprehensive Plan on a Title I school.

En tid för digitalt deltagande : En fallstudie av kommunala tillvägagångssätt vid medborgardialog i ett allt mer digitaliserat samhälle

Nordmark, Maja January 2018 (has links)
Currently most municipalities in Sweden venture to increase citizen participation in spatial and social planning inquiries. The fact of the matter is that the population’s involvement in such inquiries is continuously decreasing. Where there is some participation, the representation of different socio-‐economic groups is low. This is resulting in an uneven distribution of civil influence in societal issues and a weaker democracy. The rearing of the study is the digital era and its influence on the population’s approach towards information and communication. Several functions and services in society have developed extensively due to the impact of digitalization. For instance, the way we communicate and interact, search for new information and search for medical help are all primarily digital today. By using the benefits from digitalization, the Swedish government is aiming to become more democratic and a country of equality. One strategy to improve public participation is by implementing digital aids into the work process of the public administration. This will provide a more representative, democratic and equal planning process. The case study examines how the municipalities of Höganäs and Härnösand in Sweden have integrated citizens in former planning processes; but also how they will meet expectations of digital participation in the future.

Other Comprehensive Income in Scandinavia : Value relevant or not?

Fjellner, Simon Napoleon, Norberg, Mattias January 2018 (has links)
Other comprehensive income is a widely debated subject, that has raised controversies and scholarly debates since Littleton’s pivotal economic research in the 1940s. Today OCI is an ill-defined measure of performance, with potentially large consequences for publicly traded companies. The purpose of this study is to research whether ‘net income’ with the inclusion of ‘other comprehensive income’ to a higher degree explain firm performance than net income alone, and if there is a significant difference in the mean of OCI between the three Scandinavian countries. Three hypotheses were formed, carefully formulated with similarities of many large European studies, through an exhaustive literature study conducted. The thesis mainly relies on theory regarding studies on value-relevance, clean-surplus accounting, and dirty-surplus accounting. The study used data collected through the Eikon database and conducted empirical tests on a sample consisting of 479 firms in Scandinavia, with 260 Swedish companies, 97 Danish companies, and 122 Norwegian companies. A pro forma OCI was calculated using proxy-numbers, and then tested. The empirical findings show that Net Income with the inclusion of OCI does explain firm-performance to a higher degree than Net Income alone, that is the relative value-relevance. Another hypothesis was framed to test the incremental value-relevance of OCI, and the results also showed this to be significant. The study however failed to find support for whether OCI or Net Income had any significant difference between the incremental value-relevance. The results also found evidence that support the claim that there is a significant difference in the mean of OCI between the three Scandinavian countries. The authors concluded the study by emphasizing an apparent need for standard-setters to further develop the concept of OCI due to the ambiguous nature it seems to present toward investors.

Analýza vyprojektovaných a realizovaných společných zařízení v pozemkových úpravách / Analysis of projected and actual joint facilities in land consolidation

PAVLÍN, Vladimír January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to compare the differences between of projected proposals and implemented elements of the common facilities within the complex land consolidation in South Bohemian Region. For this study we selected these test KPU: Smetanova Lhota, Řípec, Žíšov and Ratibořské Hory. On these k.ú. conducted a detailed analysis of the plan joint projects and after-terrain reconnaissance. Based on this reconnaissance was found that most of the proposed measure has not yet been realized. This applies mainly honorary networks. Another problem is that it often leads to the neglect of conservation.

Jordbrukets betydelse i stadsnära miljö : En undersökning av Umeå kommuns översiktsplanering för Röbäcksområdet

Österholm, Emil January 2018 (has links)
This study aimed to examine what role and how the agriculture will be affected in a periurban environment as by the comprehensive plan that the municipal has established for the Röbäck area. The study tried to value the importance and role for the agriculture today and in the future. The methods of this study were interviews with farmers, inhabitants and workers of Röbäck, businesses and a sports club based on two types of interviews one survey-based with fixed questions and one in-depth interview with farmers. The municipal comprehensive plan and accompanying environmental impact assessment along relevant literature and the statistical database from Jordbruksverket were used to extract and compile data. The results show that the fields in and surrounding Röbäck contained good agricultural values and the ability to maintain of self-sufficiency in Västerbottens county is low. In the interviews with farmers the fear of not being able to use the farmland as before as a result of complaints on dust, noises, smells and rules on spreading fertilizers and pesticides raised a concern. The interviews showed that people living in Röbäck liked the combination of being close to Umeå city centrum as well as living close to the nature and the open landscapes, but few saw the link between the agriculture in Röbäck and these. The report concludes that the issue is complex and depends on whose interest should go first. There were both positive and negative outcomes of the plan in all the three pillars of sustainability
