Abstract: This research investigates the relation between design and art taking the process of creating posters as axis of observation of these connexions. The study period comprises the Brazilian Constructive Project, specifically the artistic production of Almir Mavignier and his subsequent performance as a graphic designer. The survey notes the Mavignier art production and from that analyzes the paths that he traced so the factors that led him to reach the message and the current graphic form with which he works could be understood. The relations established with the present make use of the production of posters in his post-concretist phase until the present day in which the artist performs in Germany, where he resides and establishes an atelier / studio. Besides that, it conducted to a comparison between the additives posters of Almir Mavignier and contemporary production finalist posters of the Museu da Casa Brasileira contest to determine similarities of evidence between the two productions. A study of the work of Gastão Manoel Henrique : a hypothesis about the different phases

Orientador: Marco Antonio Alves do Valle / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T03:31:42Z (GMT). A study of the work of Gastão Manoel Henrique: a hypothesis about the different phases The present thesis presents as its goal, the theoretical, critic and historic study of the work from the Brazilian sculptor Gastão Manoel Henrique, cataloguing the works produced by the artist since the fifties, investigating his expressive concerns in the historical context of the art in which he is inserted, as well as analyzing the formal and spatial organization of the works and its procedures, comparing them among themselves and also aligning them with the works of other artists of the same period in order to understand and classify them in seven distinct phases which configure an indention of the artist work until the present moment. The understanding of these set of works is done through the initial examination of some questions that characterize the introduction of the abstract art in Brazil during the fifties, taking the "Semana de Arte Moderna" (Modern Art Week) as the initial landmark of our artistic tradition, passing through the intervention of Lúcio Costa in his attempt to modernize the "Escola Nacional de Belas Artes" (Arts National School), which was one of the first acts of the Vargas Government with the nomination of a director in the area of culture. It was also analyzed, because of its relevance, the two streams present in the formation of Modern Movement in Brazil. The fist one is represented by Graça Aranha, and it is identified in the work of Ismael Nery with respect to the approximation of the artists from Rio de Janeiro to the international Surrealism and Dadaism. The second one is identified in the work of Cândido Portinari and represented by Mário de Andrade, becoming hegemonic with the 1930 Revolution and his coming to the Ministry of Education and Public Health, in the administration of Gustavo Capanema. The study of these two streams made possible the identification of its distinct theoretical conceptions, esthetics and ideologies, as well as the recognition of the proximity between the Modernism represented by Graça Aranha and the first works of Gastão Manoel Henrique, in which it is noticed the relationship with other pioneer artists of the international Modernism, among whom we find Giorgio de Chirico, from whom it is attributed the presence of the architectural motifs found in the drawings of the fifties. It was also incorporated in the dissertation the reports of the artist about the influence he received from his father, Elmano Henrique, cartoonist as a profession and responsible for the esthetic education of the young Gastão, especially in respect to the strength in the artistic fatura and conceptual, identified characteristics in his production. In order to understand and argue the many phases, it was necessary the study of the artist participation in key Brazilian neo-vanguard expositions which were the beginning of the contemporary art in Brazil; and the multiple dialogues initiated in the mid sixties between artists and the audience, also identified on the work of Lygia Clark, and started by the philosopher Merleau-Ponty; and also, beginning in the eighties the influence of Constantin Brancusi, who produced reverberations not only in Gastão Manoel Henrique but also in his friend Sérgio Camargo. The seven phases identified and analyzed on this research constitute a singular work that pretend to inaugurate in the Brazilian University the study of the work of this sculptor, showing ways for new research that might come in the national and international scenario / Doutorado / Doutor em Artes

Hermann Glöckner – Ein Beitrag zum Konstruktivismus in Sachsen

Welich, Dirk 20 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The dissertation explores the work of Dresden artist Hermann Glöckner (1889-1987). Contrary to existing studies which have been characterized by biographical approaches, this dissertation follows an approach based on theory of art. In the first part, the method is to strictly describe his work and analyze it according to functional logic; i. e. during this process a kind of artistic grammar is being produced. Set against the historical background of a search for a new identity by painters after World War One, the grammar shows clearly that the artist cherished – way more than hitherto assumed – a world view shaped by mathematic principles which, indirectly, led him on to a search for universality. The demonstration of the structures of the artist's way of thinking breaks new ground and shows that in all of his artistic expressions a primarily plastic way of thinking manifests itself. Although a few of his works are unequivocally arranged in a two-dimensional order, they reflect three-dimensional problems and thus point beyond themselves to a universe alien to nature. It becomes clear how the artist gains stimulus and energy by observing nature, while his works of art do not mirror this nature, but express their transcendence in a geometrical manner. The artist's insights gained during this epistemological painting process directly leave their mark on works which by their visual appearance seem to possess an equivalent in the outside world. However, these works also represent a verifiable, universal pictorial experiment to subsume the essence or inner sound of nature in a "unity of opposites". The analysis results in the conclusion that Glöckner's aesthetic position developed from a constructivist to a rather symbolic one. The second part of the thesis challenges the current state of research in relation to the autonomous artistic development due to political isolation, which also constitutes one of the main arguments for the assessment of Glöckner's works of art in the international context. Findings from extensive research describe the artistic environment of the early 20th century in Dresden in which the artist developed. At the same time significant connections to pivotal impulses in the development of his work are revealed so that their exceptional quality is demonstrated more clearly against a historic backdrop. Of key importance are individual works from art exhibitions in Dresden, especially from the 1920s, which Hermann Glöckner must have seen, since there are highly evident links to his own works. In studying the schooldays of the artist, the dissertation puts emphasis on a hitherto completely neglected aspect. Despite educational reforms starting in the middle of the 19th century, drawing lessons in elementary schools were hardly modernized. However, of all things the austere and reduced form, a controlled perception and the training in drawing elementary forms and assigning these to nature, turn out to be catalysts of Glöckner's artistic development. A doctrine otherwise perceived as restrictive and regularised as in an educational context is transformed in quite an extraordinary manner affirmatively into an aesthetic position which finds its artistic license in limitation. The focus of attention of the third part of the thesis is to determine Glöckner's position within theory of art and its evaluation in an international context. The main conclusion is that the artist as it were contributed with his ideas rooted in his oeuvre to the fundamental creative acts giving rise to modernist art theory, which has, however, not always been publicly acknowledged. His works possess the same character as the key works of art of the beginning of the last century and in some respects are even more radical than these. The authenticity of Glöckner's oeuvre is impressive, for all his life he had been working on a mirror of the world, which was he himself.
