How Servant Leadership Impacts Interpersonal Conflict Between Employees and Their Supervisors

Managing interpersonal conflict between employees and their supervisors continues to be a challenge for all employees. Researchers have studied how leadership styles relate to conflict management in organizations, but little is known about how servant leadership relates to conflict management in the workplace. Servant leadership is a management style in which one motivates his or her employees by serving them. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate how 7 servant leadership dimensions exhibited by supervisors correlated with 5 conflict management styles used by employees when employees had a conflict with their supervisor. A web-based survey invitation was shared with social service employees in 1 social service organization, an online participant recruitment service, and several social service-related groups on LinkedIn, and resulted in a sample of 230 participants. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to determine if a predictive relationship existed between the servant leadership dimensions, measured by the Servant Leadership Scale, and helpful and unhelpful conflict management styles, measured by the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II. Servant leadership exhibited by supervisors correlated positively with both helpful and unhelpful conflict management styles used by employees. Findings from this dissertation can facilitate social change by helping supervisors learn how their actions impact their staff members' preferred conflict management styles. Specifically, supervisors can modify their leadership styles to encourage staff members to use the integrating conflict management style when disagreements arise between them and their staff members.

The thesis examines the role of big data in resolving modern conflicts. The study combines the concept of big data with conflict resolution theory and then applies them to three directions of conflict resolution: non-violent, violent, and conflict prevention. Each of the three groups is accompanied by a case study. This method allows a detailed understanding of various aspects related to the resolution of current conflicts using technology and big data analytics. The thesis examines empirical data associated with many innovative projects that have been implemented or are in the process of development for the resolution of ongoing conflicts - UN projects focused on big data collection, technology projects developed by the US state research centers, databases of large amounts of data related to conflicts. Based on the acquired knowledge, this work explores the big data analysis for conflict resolution, its forms, advantages, disadvantages and limitations. Big data perspectives on the resolution of modern conflicts, based on empirical analysis, are summarized in three groups: operational (real-time data collection and processing), tactical (real-time decision-making based on big data analysis outcomes), and strategic (data-driven strategic advantage). Farmer-pastoralist conflicts in the Kilosa district of Tanzania: A qualitative study of stakeholder perspectives on causes, impacts and responses

This study applies a qualitative approach in examining the stakeholder perspectives on the causes and impacts of, and responses to, the farmer-pastoralist conflicts. The study is primarily a response to the broader stakeholder concerns surrounding the farmer-pastoralist conflicts in the Kilosa district of Tanzania. The interdisciplinary approach and, more importantly, the environmental security and political ecology theories, were used for conflict analysis in a bid to determine the gaps in the existing body of the literature. Specifically, the study aimed at determining: first, the causes of the conflicts in question driven by the growing concern around the increasing land conflicts between farmers and pastoralists in the district; second, the impacts of the conflicts and respective implications to the causes and conflict management mechanisms; third, the relevance of the conflict management mechanisms in place. The study adopted a case study design drawing from a range of qualitative methods involving semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis for collecting and analysing the stakeholder perspectives obtained from the field. The study then reveals that farmer-pastoralist conflicts in Kilosa district are mainly grounded in the broader domestic and external socio-political forces. The escalation into violence, however, depends mostly on resource scarcity driven by climate change manifesting as drought. In this regard, the lone environmental scarcity-conflict nexus is found to be less significant in causing farmer-pastoralist conflicts in Kilosa, a finding underpinning the political ecology’s structural influence. The study finds that the use of multistakeholder bricolage institutions is more relevant for addressing these conflicts in Kilosa district. / Commonwealth Scholarship Commission

More Than Meets The Eye: An Examination Of Whether Marital Conflict Transforms Newlywed Relationships

This exploratory research responds to two primary questions: 1) what is marital conflict and, 2) does it transform newlywed relationships? Using three-wave panel data collected with the purpose of studying the participants of the Covenant Marriage Act in Louisiana, it examines the nature and effects of conflict on newlywed couples over the first five years of marriage. While the analysis contained in this dissertation answers the research questions, it also presents more questions than it answers. This research examines six major themes regarding 1)the nature of marital conflict among these couples, 2) what couples disagree about, 3) how do couples behave when conflict is present, including managing thoughts of divorce, 4) how does conflict change over time, 5) how does conflict experienced in the family of origin manifest in current marriages, and 6) what effect does religiosity have on conflict? Findings support the conventional wisdom in marriage that conflict increases over time, and marital quality decreases over time. In addition, findings show that by wave three sex is the number one topic of disagreement, and that it had the largest increase over time.

Teaching child development principles to parents: A cognitive-developmental approach

Dissertation (Ed.D.)--Boston University, 1983 / The purpose of this study was to determine if a 12-week course would result in increased parental awareness and improved perceptions of parental behavior. The format included child development information and group problem solving of parent-child conflict dilemmas. A pre/post control group design was used with equivalent voluntary groups. The statistical techniques employed to analyze the data were the analysis of covariance and the t-test for correlated samples. The treatment group consisted of 11 parents and their 16 children while the control group comprised 11 parents and their 14 children. The Newberger (1977) Parental Awareness Scale (PAS) was administered to both sets of parents subsequent to the program and to the treatment group parents four months later. A modified version of the Schaefer (1965) Children's Reports of Parental Behavior Inventory (CRPBI) was administered to the parents and children of both groups. Analysis of the results of the PAS indicated that parents in the treatment group significantly increased their levels of parental awareness upon termination of the program (p<.03) and made further significant gains following a four month hiatus (p<.05). The results of the modified CRPBI indicated that parents perceived themselves as improving in their behavior to a significant level (p<.05) upon completion of the program but did not make likewise gains when retested four months later. The children of the parents of both groups failed to perceive improved behavior on the part of their parents. These results tentatively indicate that cognitive-structural growth can occur over time when the original stimulus conditions which facilitated it have been removed. It also appears that cognitive-developmentally oriented parent intervention is conducive to such growth. [TRUNCATED]
