Esta tesis doctoral analiza las relaciones entre ciudad y el comercio urbano en la bibliografía especializada. El punto de partida son los cambios económicos, sociales y culturales que están transformando estructuralmente el papel que juegan las ciudades en la sociedad global y el comercio urbano en las ciudades occidentales, en particular. La tesis doctoral analiza en profundidad la producción de la Geografía Urbana y la Historiografía a partir de las obras fundamentales y los conceptos utilizados. Se analizan los enfoques teórico-metodológicos y las principales escuelas geográficas de Francia, Alemania, España, Portugal, Italia y Brasil. También analiza en dos capítulos monográficos las teorías de la localización de las actividades comerciales y las técnicas de investigación utilizadas. Incluye un capítulo que analiza las clasificaciones de las actividades terciarias y propone una nueva clasificación a partir de la utilización de la técnica del diferencial semántico. Por último, el caso de estudio expone las relaciones entre las editoriales y las librerías, principalmente, en la ciudad de Barcelona desde el último cuarto de siglo XX hasta el año 2011. / The main aim of this study is to explore in depth the relationship between city and retail. To this end, it sets of with a review of the state-of-the-art in specialized literature. The beginning is the analysis focused on the economic, social and cultural changes that transforming the role of cities in the global society and retail in the western cities too. This thesis explores in depth the most important theories in Historiography and Urban Geography and key works used. One important point is the theoretical and methodological discusses approaches at geographical schools in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Brazil. To achieve these aims, the study is divided in some parts, one of them deals with the theoretical fundamentals of commercial location and research techniques used. Other chapter deals with the tertiary activities classifications and proposes a new classification from the use of semantic differential technique. Finally, the case study discusses the relationship between publishers and libraries, mainly in Barcelona city from the last quarter of the twentieth century until 2011.
