Mobile solutions and the museum experience

This thesis presents four case studies from the Finnish museum sector that are using mobile technologies in diverse ways to enhance the museum experience. At the National Museum of Finland, the mobile solution functions as an aid for providing translations in different languages and thus improving the aesthetic appearance of the exhibition. At Tampere Art Museum, the outdoors mobile tour extends the museum visit outside the physical walls of the building. At Helsinki City Museum the mobile phone is perceived as a communication tool. At Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum the Augmented Reality game combines digital narrative with real-world events, creating a solution that is both entertaining and informative.   These solutions are analysed in terms of the Contextual Model, developed by Falk and Dierking. The model divides the museum visit into three overlapping and interacting spheres – personal, social and physical. This thesis looks at how mobile solutions may enhance or hinder the museum experience in regards to each of these three spheres. Additionally, the model is compared with the results of a visitor research conducted at the National Museum of Finland in October 2013. The aim of the thesis is to identify the most successful features of these solutions and to explore how the field could be developed in the future.

An exploratory study of CEO practices in an emerging economy

This study of CEOs in Nigeria sought to discover the practices that CEOs engaged in as relevant and effective in an emerging economy. Twenty eight CEOs of national and expatriate extraction running national and multi-national companies were interviewed to understand their experiences of the contextual influences of an emerging economy and how this impacted what they did, ie. their practices. In support of contingency theories that seek to explain how effective leadership is the result of appropriateness of fit between particular behaviours and particular situations , CEO practices in an emerging economy were found to be attributable to the macro influences of an emerging economy, discovered in the Nigerian environment to include: - undue government influence, unwholesome competitor practices, short supply of skills and talent, inadequate social and physical infrastructure, a large untapped market and poor government capacity to implement policies and laws. The inclusion of previously unresearched but potentially relevant meso and micro influences of company type and CEO nationality status led to the discovery of additional CEO practices that were perceived to be relevant in an emerging economy context and the attribution of differences in CEO practices to the individual or combined influence of these contexts. A conceptual model derived from the findings of this study provided a new understanding of the relationship between the macro influences of an emerging economy, the meso influence of company type and the micro influence of CEO nationality status on CEO practices and the intended outcomes of those practices. Practical knowledge about the development of business leaders in an emerging economy has been extended as a result of deeper insights into the contextually influenced and relevant CEO practices in an emerging economy.

Claims-Making in Context: Forty Years of Canadian Feminist Activism on Violence Against Women

Feminist activism has a rich history in Canada, but mobilization on the issue of violence against women specifically gained considerable momentum during what is often referred to as the “second wave” of the feminist movement. Since this time, the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec have seen a proliferation of both grassroots and public policy responses to intimate partner violence and sexual violence. This study is an effort to construct a feminist history of the activism that occurred between 1970 and 2010, as well as to make sense of feminist claims-making strategies using a social constructionist approach to social problems and to make sense of feminist activism as a social movement using social movement impact theory. In constructing a feminist history, documents from the Canadian Women’s Movement Archives were consulted and interviews with current and former feminist activists were conducted. The historical component of this study focuses on how feminist activists first recognized and responded to the problem of violence against women. This analysis suggests that throughout the last forty years, feminist activists have engaged in a multi-pronged project of providing feminist services for victims of intimate partner and sexual violence, advocating for social and legal change as the “official” response to violence against women, and conducting their own research on the extent and nature of violence against women. Various strategies were used in this process, including forming partnerships and coalitions, but activists also faced challenges from within and outside the movement, including internal debates, struggles to fit in, and backlash from counter movements. The final chapter discusses how the history of feminist activism on violence against woman cannot easily fit into strict constructionist approach to understanding social problems and, as a social movement, is difficult to evaluate given the myriad goals, mechanisms for reaching those goals, and interpretations of success associated with the movement. Future research directions are also suggested, including looking at evidence of claims-making from other sources; bridging the gap, theoretically and pragmatically, between the “mainstream” feminist movement and other streams of women’s activism; and, more conceptual work on feminist movements and the separation between intimate partner and sexual violence.

EVALUATING THE EFFECT OF CONTEXTUAL VARIABLES ON DISCOUNTING OF HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIORS

The present study used a discounting task with differing contextual variables to examine how variables effect discounting between studies and future health related behaviors. Thirty nine participants completed two discounting questionnaires, each included hypothetical food choices paired with a weight loss or stable weight. Participants were instructed to complete each survey based on either their current weight or a gain of 75 pounds, and each survey included two identical hypothetical menu options. One menu incorporated low calorie foods, while the other incorporated moderately healthy foods, and participants were instructed to select the menu they preferred based on weight loss/no weight loss and hypothetical weight presented in instruction. Visual analysis of the results showed a difference in discounting across the conditions; participants appeared to be more impulsive at their current weight. At normal weight, visual analysis of the switch values show that the proportional value of the switch ranged from 1.0 at the lowest proportional delay level to .75 at proportional delay 1. In the hypothetical weight gain condition, this occurred at a level of .95 at the lowest proportional delay and .75 at delay 1. In a visual analysis of AUC comparisons, participants’ scores are higher in the 75 pound weight condition than the normal weight condition, and farther from 0 in the 75 pound weight condition.

Attentional and Neural Manipulations of Visuospatial Contextual Information

A critical function of the human visual system is to parse objects from the larger context of the environment, allowing for the identification of, and potential interaction with, those objects. The use of contextual information allows us to rapidly locate, identify, and interact with objects that appear in the environment. Contextual information can help specify an object's location within the environment (allocentric encoding) or with respect to the observer (egocentric encoding). Understanding how contextual information influences perceptual organization, and the neural systems that process a complex scene, is critical in understanding how contextual information assists in parsing local information from background. In the real world, relying on context is typically beneficial, as most objects occur in circumscribed environments. However, there are circumstances in which context can harm performance. In the case of visual illusions, relying on the context can bias observers' perceptions and cause significant motor errors. Studying the illusory conditions under which perceptual/motor functions are "fooled", or breakdown, can provide valuable information about how the brain computes allocentric and egocentric frames of reference. The following studies examine how attentional (Chapters II & III) manipulations of visuospatial context affect components of observers' egocentric reference frames (e.g., perceived vertical or subjective midline) and how neural manipulations (Chapter IV) can modulate observers' reliance on contextual information. In Chapter II, the role of attentional control settings on contextual processing is examined. Chapter III addresses the question of how visuospatial shifts of attention interact with an egocentric frame of reference. Finally, Chapter IV examines the functional role of superior parietal cortex in the processing of egocentric contextual information.

Development of a Culturally Responsive PBIS Toolkit

The purpose of this grant proposal is to develop a toolkit to support school teams in the development and implementation of culturally responsive Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The toolkit is necessary to help school teams address lingering disparities in discipline and to improve school climate. Exclusionary discipline, such as out of school suspensions and expulsion, disproportionately affects ethnically and racially diverse students, and has a devastating effect on student outcomes, including academic achievement, attendance, and graduation. Ethnically and racially diverse students are also more likely to be given a disciplinary consequence for behaviors that require a subjective interpretation of the student’s behavior, which can be influenced by implicit bias. In schools that have implemented PBIS, exclusionary discipline has been shown to decrease overall, but disproportionate discipline persists. The development of a culturally responsive toolkit will support the efforts of school PBIS teams to decrease disproportionate discipline outcomes. The toolkit will assist school teams with the cultural adaptation of core features of PBIS by providing a process for addressing contextual fit of the school and soliciting feedback from the school community. The methodological approach for this project includes both qualitative and quantitative processes. An expert panel will be convened to address the complexities of implementation and cultural adaptation within the context of PBIS. The culturally responsive PBIS toolkit will consist of a comprehensive series of recommended practices, contextual considerations, evaluation tools, and resources, to be used concurrently with analysis of schoolwide data. The toolkit will be piloted in schools in the Pacific Northwest and then disseminated.

A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em 2005 e 2006 e envolveu estudantes agricultores que freqüentaram o segundo grau. Inicialmente, realizamos observações das atividades agrícolas desenvolvidas pelos estudantes. Então, nós investigamos os seus conhecimentos tradicionais, os quais foram comparados aos conteúdos de ensino da biologia contidos em livros didáticos. O objetivo desta comparação, não foi a hierarquização destas formas de conhecimento, mas buscar oportunidades adequadas para nossas intervenções pedagógicas. Baseadas nestas comparações e em desenhos feitos pelos estudantes sobre as plantas cultivadas, elaboramos um material didático, que foi empregado em intervenções pedagógicas conduzidas por uma professora de biologia da escola investigada. Este material teve como objetivo orientar o diálogo entre o conhecimento tradicional agrícola e o conhecimento científico escolar no contexto do ensino de biologia, acompanhado da delimitação dos contextos de aplicação de cada uma destas formas de conhecimento. Nossos resultados indicam que os estudantes agricultores compartilham um corpo significante de conhecimentos e práticas influenciadas por suas tradições culturais, que estão, porém, em um processo de erosão. Tais conhecimentos apresentam semelhanças e diferenças com relação às idéias científicas apresentadas em livros didáticos de biologia. Nas intervenções pedagógicas, ocorreram discriminações na sala de aula que poderiam e deveriam ter sido mediadas pela professora, para dar lugar ao diálogo entre aquelas duas formas de conhecimento, mas não o foram. Alguns estudantes perceberam os distintos contextos de aplicação dos conhecimentos, em particular, de seu conhecimento tradicional. Levando em conta a metodologia utilizada para investigar os conhecimentos tradicionais agrícolas, concluímos que a etnobiologia pode contribuir para a investigação dos conhecimentos dos estudantes sobre a natureza. A inclusão dos XII conhecimentos etnobiológicos nas aulas de biologia abriu possibilidades para o diálogo entre os saberes empíricos dos estudantes e os conteúdos do ensino de biologia. Contudo, o diálogo entre saberes nas salas de aula é uma questão complexa, como mostram as dificuldades com as quais a professora se deparou, e coloca demandas específicas para a formação docente. O presente estudo aponta, assim, para a continuidade de nossa pesquisa através da elaboração e teste de estratégias que contribuam para a formação docente sensível ao ensino de ciências multicultural.

Contextual Computing: Tracking Healthcare Providers in the Emergency Department via Bluetooth Beacons

abstract: Hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) are frequently crowded. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) collects performance measurements from EDs such as that of the door to clinician time. The door to clinician time is the time at which a patient is first seen by a clinician. Current methods for documenting the door to clinician time are in written form and may contain inaccuracies. The goal of this thesis is to provide a method for automatic and accurate retrieval and documentation of the door to clinician time. To automatically collect door to clinician times, single board computers were installed in patient rooms that logged the time whenever they saw a specific Bluetooth emission from a device that the clinician carried. The Bluetooth signal is used to calculate the distance of the clinician from the single board computer. The logged time and distance calculation is then sent to the server where it is determined if the clinician was in the room seeing the patient at the time logged. The times automatically collected were compared with the handwritten times recorded by clinicians and have shown that they are justifiably accurate to the minute. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2015

Categorical Contextual Cueing in Visual Search

abstract: Previous research has shown that people can implicitly learn repeated visual contexts and use this information when locating relevant items. For example, when people are presented with repeated spatial configurations of distractor items or distractor identities in visual search, they become faster to find target stimuli in these repeated contexts over time (Chun and Jiang, 1998; 1999). Given that people learn these repeated distractor configurations and identities, might they also implicitly encode semantic information about distractors, if this information is predictive of the target location? We investigated this question with a series of visual search experiments using real-world stimuli within a contextual cueing paradigm (Chun and Jiang, 1998). Specifically, we tested whether participants could learn, through experience, that the target images they are searching for are always located near specific categories of distractors, such as food items or animals. We also varied the spatial consistency of target locations, in order to rule out implicit learning of repeated target locations. Results suggest that participants implicitly learned the target-predictive categories of distractors and used this information during search, although these results failed to reach significance. This lack of significance may have been due the relative simplicity of the search task, however, and several new experiments are proposed to further investigate whether repeated category information can benefit search. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2014
