Kelvin Probe Electrode for Field Detection of Corrosion of Steel in ConcreteEmmenegger, Leonidas Philip 02 November 2015 (has links)
While the Kelvin Probe (KP) has been used in a variety of surface scanning applications, the use of the KP in reinforced concrete structures to detect corrosion has been pioneered by previous work performed at the University of South Florida. However, in that work, the scale and construction of the probes was not suited to use in the field. This is primarily attributable to the small operating disk-to-concrete gap which would make the probe unable to accommodate road conditions, such as irregularities in the grading of the road, and local pitting of the surface. Therefore, it was important to investigate whether the KP can be scaled up while still maintaining resolution and fidelity of the measurements taken. The new mobile KP prototype (MKPP) constructed in this work, has a sensing disk that is approximately 10 cm in diameter and is capable of operating up to 2 cm above the concrete surface. Testing consisted of mapping an instrumented test slab simulating a corroding concrete bridge deck, at a rate of travel of about 0.6 mph (~1 ft/s) over the slab surface. The potential map generated through use of the MKPP successfully identified the corroding spot, the location of which was verified using the traditional half-cell potential mapping method outlined in ASTM C 876-09. The MKPP mapping in these trials was approximately 10 times faster than when using the traditional method. The faster potential mapping by the MKPP, while still identifying corroding sites, should allow for more economical and less intrusive survey of the condition of bridge decks. The work set the necessary proof of concept for future demonstration of an array of such probes which would further magnify the beneficial effect.

Exploring emotive listening experiences through continuous measurement of self-report and listening profiles / Maria Louisa SchutteSchutte, Maria Louisa January 2011 (has links)
Training can enable performers to express music in a personal and emotional way while
communicating aesthetic impressions to an audience. Little research has been done on the
emotive experiences of performing musicians listening to their own performances. The main
goal of this study was to develop a reliable way to investigate emotive content of such
experiences through a combination of listening profiles and continuous measurement.
This empirical, methodological study used a mixed-method design. Responses from formally
and informally trained musicians were tested. The methodology consists of two parts:
listening profiles (Part I), and the continuous measurement of self-reported emotional
response to music (Part II), supported by interviews. Part I consists of a demographic
questionnaire, a listening test and a personality test. Part II consists of a computerised
questionnaire with four questions: 1) word sorting, 2) word, colours, and facial expressions
checklists, which participants use to indicate their emotional responses while the music plays,
3) free description, and 4) rating scales. Data was obtained during three test periods.
Part I results revealed that personality, illness, preferences, and psychological factors
influence the emotive content of listening experiences. Participants’ response time and
manner of word sorting was also supportive of their profiles. Part II results revealed that
listeners pay attention to both structural and performance elements as well as emotive content
in both prescribed and personal musical tracks. Only a few participants were able to identify
the predetermined emotion of the prescribed musical tracks. Participants’ experiences seemed
to be influenced by training and personal preferences.
Listening to their own recorded performances, informally trained participants were able to
focus progressively less on performance elements and more on emotive content, while formally trained participants seemed to focus progressively more on performance elements,
and less on emotive content. / Thesis (MMus)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

Medienos tūrio nustatymo metodų tikslumo tyrimas / Investigation of methods for wood volume accurancyKlimas, Jonas 01 June 2011 (has links)
Magistro darbe tiriami brandžių medynų tūrio nustatymo metodai. Medynų tūris nustatomas pagal : 1) atrankinio medžių matavimo metodo duomenis (miškotvarkos metu nustatytas medyno tūris), 2) ištisinio medžių matavimo nustatytą tūrį, 3) tūris nustatytas pagal pagamintą medienos produkciją (pridedant biologinės įvairovės bei sėklinių medžių tūrius, taip pat pridedant atliekas pagal „Medžių tūrio struktūros“ lenteles ).
Darbo objektas - Tytuvėnų miškų urėdijos, Kelmės krašto IV miškų grupės brandūs medynai.
Tikslas – įvertinti kertamų medynų likvidinės medienos tūrio nustatymo tikslumą ir pasitaikančių skirtumų priežastis.
Darbo metodai – medienos tūrio paklaidų, gautų lyginant ištisinio medienos matavimo duomenis su miškotvarkos metu nustatytu tūriu ir pagamintos produkcijos duomenimis, analizė. Palyginti skirtingais metodais apskaičiuotą medienos tūrį.
Darbo rezultatai: Įvertinus kertamų eglynų tūrį, pagal ištisinį medžių matavimo metodą, gauti rezultatai parodė, kad vidutinis medienos tūris yra 0,7 % didesnis lyginant su miškotvarkos duomenimis (atrankinis medžių matavimo metodas). Medynuose, pagal atskiras medžių rūšis, didžiausi skirtumai pušies 8,7 % ir liepos 8,2 % medžių tūriuose.
Įvertinus Tytuvėnų miškų urėdijos brandžius medynus pagal ištisinį medžių matavimo metodą (etalonas) ir pagamintą medienos produkciją (pridedant biologinės įvairovės ir sėklinius medžius, pridedant atliekų tūrį) nustatyta, kad biržėse prikertama daugiau nei planuota, vidutiniškai 0,2 %... Stands must be determined by: a) a selective method for measuring tree data (at the forest stand volume), 2) continuous measurement of the volume of trees, 3) the volume of manufactured wood products (by adding bio-diversity and tree seed volumes, as well as the addition of waste under "Medienos tūrio struktūros” tables.) Object of research - Tytuvėnai forest enterprises Kelmė region IV group mature trees. Aim of research - to assess crossed stand merchantable timber volume and accuracy in common reasons for the differences. Methods of research - the timber volume errors, obtained by comparing the continuous measurement of wood in the forest data set in the volume and output data analysis. Compare the different methods produce timber volume. Results of the research: The assessment of the spruce volume crossed by a continuous method of measuring the trees, the results showed that the average wood volume is 0.7 % higher compared with the forest data (selective tree method). Stands under different tree species, the largest differences between pine 8,7 % and lime 8,2 % tree volumes. The assessment of forest enterprises Tytuvėnai mature stands of trees under the continuous measurement method (standard) and made of wood products (by adding bio-diversity and tree seedling, plus the volume of waste) finds that cut down more than expected, on average 0.2% increase.

Bodové měření průtoku vody v povrchových tocích pro zpřesnění kontinuálního monitoringu průtoku / Volume measurement discharge in surface runoff for refine continuous measurementŠEBOR, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part includes issues associated with runoff and discharge, methods for discharge measurement and measurements of uncertainties. The practical part of the thesis describes a specific process flow measurement in Kopaninský and Jenínský stream. There is a familiarization with the water flow velocity measurement and comparison methods of volume measurement discharge with continuous measurement. The results of the practical part served to refine the rainfall-runoff processes in research catchment areas. Refined values of the flow rate were used as input data for the calculation of the runoff coefficient and for quantifying the losses of nutrients from the catchment areas. Calculation of the runoff coefficient and nutrient losses were compared for the original and the revised equation discharge curve. Volume measurement discharge has shown that the different conditions above measurement weir during continuous monitoring lead to the uncertainties of measurement. That´s why one has to approach to each flowmeasurement individually and consider the situation in a particular installation.
