Targeted Funding of Research and Education and Faculty Perception of Academic Freedom in Medical Education

Elliott, Shelly 02 December 2009 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between targeted funding of research and education and faculty perception of academic freedom at their medical schools. A total of 130 physician and basic sciences faculty from three medical schools assessed academic freedom at their institutions on an academic freedom inventory developed specifically for this study. The lack of a representative sample and the weak explanatory power of the findings limit conclusions that could be drawn. Using multiple regression analysis, the researcher was not able to reject the null for a relationship between targeted funding and academic freedom, using the probability of F statistical test (p>0.05). Other variables included I the study were found to be statistically significant, but the models were generalized considered weak. A statistically significant relationship was found for faculty, who perceived faculty governance and institutional autonomy to be inhibited at their institutions more than their administrators. Collateral track faculty perceived freedom to research to be inhibited, while women and minorities perceived freedom to speak to be inhibited. One unexpected finding was the relationship between being male and being a citizen with a perception that academic freedom was inhibited at their institutions more so than for women and faculty who were not U.S. citizens. These findings were surprising given concern raised in the literature about the treatment of foreign faculty and students after the 9-11 terrorist attacks (AAUP, 2003). Further research is recommended to determine if findings can be replicated with a reliable instrument and a representative sample.

A methodology to identify success criteria for the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center

Phusavat, Kongkiti Peter 12 March 2009 (has links)
The study has two objectives: to develop a methodology to identify success criteria for the VT CRC and to communicate outputs (success criteria) to selected members of the VT CRC’s stakeholders. A methodology is developed to identify success criteria based on the VT CRC's primary objectives. These primary objectives are: technology transfer and economic development. The purposes of a methodology are to place the VT CRC within the framework of Virginia Tech's larger missions and then to identify success criteria. A methodology consists of seven steps. There are thirteen success criteria which have been identified by a methodology. A methodology is based on management systems engineering theories, concepts, and tools/techniques. The study communicates outputs from a methodology by a questionnaire. Questionnaires will be sent to twelve selected members who are from the VT CRC, the university, tenants, and Town of Blacksburg. Their responses will be analyzed to decide whether these outputs are success criteria for the VT CRC and whether a methodology accomplishes its purposes. Furthermore, a background of Virginia Tech and a concept of university-related research parks will be discussed. Included in a discussion of Virginia Tech are missions, a modern view of a land-grant university, and roles of the Virginia Tech Foundation. Included in a discussion of research parks are purposes, benefits, and drawbacks. / Master of Science

資訊通訊系統代工產業之企業創新研發中心研究

劉震華, Liu, Tim Chen-Hua Unknown Date (has links)
Running a Corporate Research Center well in 3C ODM industry is always a questionable task, ODM based companies are used to follow industry standard to build huge mass production capacity and also hope can create better gross margin be creating something different. This is really a dilemma. In this thesis, we use a real case C Company to study how the corporate research center operates inside the 3C ODM industry by three examining scopes. There are operation strategy, innovative technology project management and intellectual property right management. According to this study result, we concluded a few successful factors for corporate research center in C Company. There are innovative clamping economics model for operation strategy, Dorothy’s theory based technology project phase management and project based IP mining system. All the above factors should work together to make the whole research center running smoothly.
