Evaluating the impact of a leadership development programme for women at the industrial development corporation

M.Comm. / This study evaluates the impact of leadership development programmes for women in the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) and provides comments on the leadership competencies and skills acquired. An evaluation research methodology was chosen and .Kirkpatrick‟s Four Level Evaluation Model defined the parameters of this study. A mixed-method approach was adopted, since it provided a vehicle for the researcher to make recommendations for improving further programmes as they evolved and substantiate findings from different sources to ensure the validity of the data and conclusions that emanated from this study. Female leadership studies conducted worldwide draw conclusions that highlight the unique challenges that women face as they ascend into the leadership ranks of organisations. This study also explored the challenges and opportunities that women in the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) encountered in their quest for leadership roles and responsibilities. The women‟s leadership development programmes received considerable praise from the participants and the results of this study conclude that the programme outcomes were met in providing an opportunity for them to learn and implement individual leadership competencies .The leadership competencies that were enhanced were self-awareness and confidence, collaboration, cultural competence, communication, networking and relationship building. In addition, various leadership theories were explored and the participants identified with transformational leadership in particular. The participants reported favourably on the mentoring and coaching aspects of the leadership development initiatives and some have indicated an interest and willingness to support others through mentoring and coaching. However, the leadership competencies have not been applied optimally into the organization and the participants would need the continued support of the organisation by way of additional platforms to apply these acquired leadership competencies. This can help the organisation realise the unique contribution of IV women in the organisation, and if the programmes that have been implemented are sustained over time and the leadership competencies applied, this could lead to organisational transformation. An interesting aspect of this study was that the majority of the women believed that the organisation provided sufficient opportunities for women to progress and encouraged the continuation of these leadership development initiatives, but not to the exclusion and marginalisation of men in the organisation. As progressive as this kind of thinking is, it typically illustrates the transformational leadership tendencies of women in keeping with research that recommends leader development (i.e. individual leaders such as the women‟s leadership development initiatives), as well as leadership development (i.e. broader organisational focus on enhancing the organisational leadership competencies). The Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa will reap rewards in future should it continue on the path of leadership development for women; but also in general as this critical mass of leaders who apply cutting-edge leadership thinking will contribute to organisational success over a sustained period of time.

LL.M. / The main objective of the South African interrogation procedures during corporate insolvency is to trace and recover all corporate assets. The focus of such procedures is therefore on gathering information rather than investigating any probable causes of the insolvency and failure of the company, as English legislation prescribes. At present in South Africa no reasons have to be supplied to creditors, contributors or the public to explain the failure of companies. This situation contributes to the hesitant and sceptical attitude of the public towards companies and their reluctance to invest in companies. This aspect of our insolvency law can also have a negative impact on the level of foreign investment. The question therefore arises on how the insolvency industry should deal with the various challenges that such a situation presents, which entails at the same time challenging the general effectiveness of the South African insolvency system in its entirety.

Collapse of Atlantic Acceptance Corporation and its effect on the structure of liabilities and quality of reporting of Canadian finance companies

On June 14th, 1965, Atlantic Acceptance Corporation Limited, a major Canadian finance company failed to meet a $5 million matured short-term secured note and three days later the company was placed in receivership by Montreal Trust Company, the trustee. This thesis represents a study of the growth, development and collapse of Atlantic Acceptance, and the effects of that collapse on the structure of liabilities and the quality of reporting on the activities of finance and consumer loan companies in Canada. From the outset, I would like to bring to the reader's attention the fact that this thesis was completed before the findings of the Ontario Royal Commission on the collapse of Atlantic were made public. The evidence presented to the Commission has been so voluminous and intricate, that after more than two years of study, Mr. Justice Hughes of the Ontario Supreme Court, who served as Chairman of the Ontario Royal Commission on Atlantic, has not yet been able to present his report. It is expected that the above report will be made public later this year (1968). The thesis is divided into three Chapters. Each Chapter is divided into sections which might in themselves have been treated as chapters, except that to do so would have, in my view, broken the continuity of the study. Chapter I serves as an introduction to Atlantic. Here the reader will learn that over the life of the company, especially in the early nineteen-sixties, Atlantic Acceptance Corporation was completely out-performing the Canadian finance industry. In the Appendix to Chapter I, tables are drawn up to trace the growth pattern of Atlantic Acceptance. Chapter I also discusses the general nature of the finance industry, and the methods in which finance companies finance their assets. It concludes by investigating the financing techniques employed by Atlantic Acceptance Corporation. Chapter II is a study of the precipitating factors in the collapse of Atlantic Acceptance. Here, the Haves Lending Model is presented as a normative model for the conduct of the affairs of financial institutions. The rather exhaustive and comprehensive evidence on Atlantic's lending, management and auditing practices presented in this Chapter, indicates that the affairs of Atlantic Acceptance and its subsidiaries were not conducted in accordance with the principles collected and published by Professor Douglas Hayes. In Chapter II it will be learned that Montreal Trust Company, the trustee, brought legal action against the President of Atlantic and members of the accounting firm which audited the subsidiaries, alleging a conspiracy on the part of the defendants and each of them to defraud the plaintiff. In Chapter III the concern is with the effects of the collapse of Atlantic Acceptance on the structure of liabilities and the quality of reporting on the activities of finance and consumer loan companies in Canada. Evidence is presented to show that: (1) as a result of Atlantic's collapse, finance and consumer loan companies in Canada saw a flight of funds out of their short-term paper, and an increase in their use of bank borrowings and advances from parent and associated companies; (2) the collapse of Atlantic has led the finance and consumer loan industry and the Investment Dealers Association of Canada to develop a new improved method of reporting on the activities of finance and consumer loan companies in Canada. Since March 1967, minimum standards of reporting for all finance and consumer loan companies doing business in Canada have been: audited financial statements, appropriate Robert Morris Associates questionnaires, and the Canadian Sales Finance Long Form Report. Since finance companies in Canada are now major intermediaries in both the commercial and financial industries, we conclude that there should be a special Act of Parliament under which their operations are conducted. This Act should be known as the Finance Company Act. There should also be an Inspector of Finance Companies with similar powers to those given the Inspector of Chartered Banks, and finance companies should be brought into a closer working arrangement with the Bank of Canada so that they would be made more responsive to monetary policy. / Business, Sauder School of / Graduate

Aim of my work is find out if current adaptation process in transnational organization is sufficient and satisfy its needs in area of adaptation of employees. In the first theoretical part i am focus on leading of human resoureces in connection with personal l function on culture of company, its strategy and policy. Also in this part you can find explanation of perception of the word adaptation. Describe of process for adaptation of new emplyees. In methodology part I intruduce my aim of the thesis, also with methodology which i use for reach to answer on my aim of the thesis. In the last part, which is empiric, I focus on analyze of external and internal environment of company and also analyze of current situation of human resources in this company. The aim of these analyses is determinate needs and targets of the company adaptation process. These findings help us to determinate criteria and indicators. After this we confront these criteria and indicators with current situation of adaptation process in company. The result of these finding leads me to suggest company couple new guesses, how to improve and make its adaptation process more effective.

Promises and challenges of internal dispute resolution in the corporate workplace

This thesis examines the promises and challenges of internal dispute resolution (IDR) in the corporate workplace of Canada and the United States. The focus of inquiry is twofold: a theoretical and socio-historical study of the corporation followed by a practical analysis of dispute resolution of human or civil rights. The examination of the role of the corporation begins with a review of the statutory and jurisprudential underpinnings of the "corporate person," which have legitimized the corporation and its powerful place in society. Such power, sanctified by the law, impacts not only society at large but also employees of the corporation. Internalization of legal systems into the corporate workplace has shifted some dispute resolution responsibilities from the public to the private domain, relegating further power to the corporation. This public to private shift has deputized the corporation as an enforcer of its employees' civil rights. Two predominant theories of the corporation - the Contractarian and Communitarian - provide understanding about power relationships among the corporation and its constituents. U.S. and Canadian courts and legislatures have demonstrated a preference for the Contractarian theory, which holds that the corporation is a nexus of contracts, and that firm managers should prioritize its contract with its shareholders, governing the corporation so as to maximize shareholder wealth. A careful examination of corporate theory and governance illustrates the corporation's conflict of interest in holding shareholder interests primary while resolving employment disputes. The power differential between the corporation, as agents of its shareholder principals, and employees presents the greatest challenge in equitably resolving employment disputes. The practical aspects of internal dispute resolution in the corporate workplace focus on the potential benefits and risks to employees. In-house mediation, with certain procedural safeguards, has potential for benefits that outweigh risks to individual employees. Building on principles and structures of formal procedural fairness found in courts of law and administrative tribunals, five essential features can best guarantee fairness in IDR: voluntary participation, retention of employees' right to judicial review, prohibition against reprisal for raising the dispute, use of an external mediator, and oversight of the corporation's IDR program by a neutral, external body. / Law, Peter A. Adapting stage drama for radio: techniques of preparing stage scripts for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio production

Since 1944, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, through its radio network, has been the prime disseminator of drama to Canadians. CBC radio reaches virtually every inhabited region of the country, including remote areas where little or no professional stage drama is presented. Canadian playwrights have often adapted their stage plays for GBC radio production in order to reach the largest potential audience. This study examines the techniques which have been used by seven playwrights to adapt their stage plays for CBC radio. The plays examined are: The Abdication by Norman Newton; The Action Tonight by Tom Grainger; Captives of the Faceless Drummer, by George Ryga; Do You Remember One September Afternoon?, by David Watmough; The Great Hunger, by Leonard Peterson; Women in the Attic, by Leonard Peterson; Quiet Day in Belfast and its radio version "Murder in the Betting Shop," by Andrew Angus Dalrymple; and Yesterday the Children Were Dancing, by Gratien Gélinas, translated and adapted by Mavor Moore. The stage scripts and their radio versions were examined to ascertain the changes that had occurred in the adaptation process. The playwrights and several CBC producers were interviewed. Comparison between the stage and radio versions revealed differences in the order of speeches, and additions or deletions of verbal and non-verbal elements. Dialogue was cut or condensed to shorten the script for radio. Occasionally the order of events was rearranged for the adaptation to insure clarity after elements had been cut. Some visual elements of the stage play received verbal equivalents in the radio script, while others were translated through radio production techniques, such as sound effects. In addition, radio production techniques which had no stage equivalent were added in the adaptation process to help create a mood or emphasize a character. These alterations appear to have been made for two reasons: to compensate for the lack of the visual element on radio, and to shorten the script to conform to the CBC network's time restrictions. The author of this study concludes that the adaptation techniques used in the scripts under consideration are relatively rudimentary. For the most part, the playwrights did only what was necessary to make the stage play understandable to the radio listener and did not fully exploit the potential of the radio medium. The radio listener can be stimulated to imagine an unbounded stage and need not be restricted by an aural translation of a physical stage setting. Corporate obligations towards the realization of the right to development

LL.M. (Human Rights Law) / The idea of “development” being a legitimate universal human entitlement is not a new phenomenon. The emergence of this concept can be traced back to a number of universal norms which emerged from the United Nations (UN) legal framework since its creation in 1945.These norms include principles such as: greater democracy and representation in international relations; the economic complementarities of independent States; individuals as beneficiaries of social, economic and political development; respect for human rights; and the interrelationship between human rights and development.1 These principles provided the background against which the first UN working group on the Right to Development started elaborating a legal framework aiming at providing a binding solution to the conflict between industrialized States and developing States concerning the distribution of the world’s resources in 1970. At that time, the atmosphere at the UN Commission on Human Rights was highly charged with ideological positioning. Socialist countries pressed for peace and disarmament; developing States for development and an end to apartheid; Western industrialized States for establishing damage control machinery to scrutinize violations of civil and political rights.2 In 1977, the Commission on Human Rights submitted to the U.N Secretary General its first proposal which considered the suggestion of the UN Working group on the Right to Development. The proposal suggested that the “universal entitlement to development” was a prerogative of States on behalf of their populations.3 This proposal was rejected in 1979 by the conservative North American, European members of the U.N, and other committee members.
