This work tried to assembled the informations and the methodologies for the modeling of the corrugated paperboard by the finite element method with the objective of realize the modeling in the program ANSYS and identify the advantages and restrictions of this method. Get a package modeling with opening destined for horticultural products. Of extant information in literature were identify three shapes of structures representing by the finite element method, they were: The corrugated paperboard with structural crumb modeling (ME); The homogenize orthotropic plaque in layers with crumb as sandwich shape modeling (Ms) and The homogenize orthotropic plaque in unique idealized layer modeling (MI). The results showed that the structures modeled in ME shape had the practice rehearsal corresponding values when were added in the crumbs a sticker layer. For the fmite element method in shape of sandwich layer (Ms), the approximation of the obtained values in the experimental rehearsal was possible to get a real good adjust, since the assign values for the chiseling and twisting modules had a reduce that approach then with the real values. Following this same procedure, for the chiseling and twisting modules, were adjusts the homogenize orthotropic plaque in unique idealized layer modeling (MI)' / Doutorado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica

Modelling of failure mechanisms for corrugated board.

Haidar, Mohamed January 2015 (has links)
The present work describes the construction of a semi-analytical model for prediction of buckling loads in simply supported corrugated paperboard panels. The model accounts for transverse shear, due to the weakness of the core in such plates compared to the facings. This was done utilizing energy relations and rst order transverse shear. The panel was homogenised using laminate theory. A detailed model using FEM was derived in order to validate the predictive capabilities of the analytical model. Experimental testing was performed to estimate the accuracy of both theoretical models, and assess the limitation of the analytical model. All modes of analysis showed good agreement for cubic boxes. Further investigation into expanding the scope of the analytical model was carried out and commented on.

Beneficial Reuse of Corrugated Paperboard in Civil Engineering Applications

Stone, Gregory M 01 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Abstract Beneficial Reuse of Corrugated Paperboard in Civil Engineering Applications Gregory Michael Stone An investigation was conducted to explore the potential for reuse of corrugated paperboard. Corrugated paperboard represents a large fraction of the municipal solid waste generated and discarded in the United States. Alternative applications for reuse can provide a significant benefit by reducing the volume of waste being disposed and by reducing the use of raw materials. Four civil engineering applications were examined for potential beneficial reuse of corrugated paperboard: slurry trench construction, vertical drilling, directional drilling, and controlled low strength materials (CLSM). For the purpose of this project, corrugated paperboard was pulped and added to bentonite slurry or CLSM mixtures. Bentonite slurry mixtures were tested for viscosity, density, filtrate loss, and permeability. The behavior of the bentonite slurries was greatly influenced by interaction and interlocking of corrugate fibers; in general resulting in increased viscosity, filtrate loss, and permeability and decreased density. CLSM mixtures were tested for flow consistency, unit weight, air content, and compressive strength. CLSM mixtures prepared with corrugated paperboard showed an increased water demand due to high absorption of the corrugate. The higher water content was a significant factor contributing to decreased unit weight and compressive strength. CLSM mixtures containing corrugated paperboard also exhibited increased air contents, possibly due to entrapment of air within the corrugate pulp. Corrugated paperboard was used to successfully replace up to 27% of bentonite for slurry trench applications, 60% of bentonite for vertical drilling applications, and 59% of bentonite for directional drilling applications while maintaining acceptable engineering properties. For CLSM mixtures up to 1% of fine aggregate was replaced with corrugated paperboard while maintaining satisfactory engineering properties. Incorporation of corrugated paper board into bentonite slurry, CLSM, and drilling fluid applications provides a viable option for beneficial reuse.

Optimal inventory control in cardboard box producing factories : a case study

Black, Catherine Dianne 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScIngwet)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a case study in optimal inventory control, applied to Clickabox factory, a South African cardboard box producer from whom cardboard boxes may be ordered at short notice via the internet. The problem of developing a decision–support system for optimal stockholding at the factory, in order to minimize cardboard off–cut wastage subject to required service levels, is addressed in this thesis. Previously a simple replenishment policy, based largely on experience, was implemented at the factory. The inventory model developed for and applied to Clickabox in this thesis takes account of a raw materials substitution cascade, as well as the stochasticity of demand, and other factors such as cost, service level and spatial requirements for the storage of stock. This combination of stochastic demand and product substitution has not, to the author’s knowledge, previously been dealt with in the literature. There are two primary deliverables of this study. The first is a suggestion as to the suitable stock composition (cardboard types from which boxes may be manufactured) to be kept in inventory at the factory. The second deliverable is a computerised decision–support system, based on the inventory model developed, to aid in future inventory replenishment decisions at Clickabox. Some of the results of this thesis have, at the time of writing, already been implemented with success at the factory. These include the suggestions given to the management of Clickabox as to the suitable stock types to be held in inventory, which have been implemented in stages since March 2003. The suggested stock composition has proven to be superior to the previous stock types held, in terms of a reduction in off–cut wastage and increased availability of suitable boards.
