Dr. Bethany Novotny, an assistant professor in ETSU’s Department of Counseling and Human Services, discusses grit, mindset and self-efficacy and their application for individuals in helping roles.

Understanding the purpose and functional dynamics of those suffering with a clinical diagnosis is one of the first steps in conceptualizing effective interventions in psychotherapy. This bloc focuses on case conceptualization from diagnosis to treatment, using Adlerian principles to help re-direct clients toward the useful side of life. Working with anxiety, depression, trauma, and schizophrenia and delusional disorders is emphasised.

Using data collected from counselor educators, the presenters will explore the current status of teaching suicide assessment in CACREP accredited master’s programs, as well as counselor educators’ comfort level with adequately preparing students to assess suicide risk. Recommendations for increasing competence and strategies for teaching will be provided.

Master's students have the potential to contribute to the counseling literature in significant ways, reducing the current scientist-practitioner gap in the mental health professions. Participants in this roundtable will have the opportunity to learn and discuss strategies for creating programs that engage master's level counseling trainees in research and are supportive of the development of scientist-practitioners in counseling.

Technology currently permeates both the personal and professional lives of many counseling professionals. Therefore, counselor educators are charged with the responsibility of ensuring appropriate infusion of technology in the training of counseling students. During this presentation, three methods for incorporating technology in the classroom will be discussed and demonstrated and current literature about their efficacy will be reviewed. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a smart phone, tablet, or laptop to the presentation to ensure full participation.
