Bewusmaking as fokus in opleidingsriglyne vir vrywillige beradersVorback, Alta Maria 30 June 2005 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / Across the world children are affected by factors such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, divorce and loss. More organisations are getting involved in the training of voluntary counsellors. Although these counsellors have the necessary theoretical knowledge they still experience problems in working effectively with these children. Possible reasons for this are these counsellors' own unfinished issues and loss. Within this study the focus is on creating awareness for counsellors within training situations from a Gestalt approach.
As part of the fulfilment of the literature study an empirical study has been done. A qualitative study with a small portion of quantitative research has been done with the implementation of a training programme for voluntary counsellors. Various mediums were used to create heightened self-awareness with regard to various topics. Training guidelines are than given for creating awareness within training situations for voluntary counsellors.
'n Literatuurstudie is gedoen waartydens
aspekte bekom is:
vyf dae geskied.
Social work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

The role of supervision in the management of counsellor burnoutGachutha, Catherine Wanjiru 30 November 2006 (has links)
The study investigated the extent of burnout condition
among counsellors in Kenya. The sources of burnout were
explored and personality style was positively correlated
with burnout development. Impact of burnout on
counsellor wellness and productivity was also established.
It examined whether counsellor supervision was an
appropriate strategy in the management of counsellor
burnout.
The study utilized a pluralistic design that combined both
qualitative and quantitative methods (Howard, 1983). The
qualitative design permitted collection of rich data from
study subjects' experiential and perceptual fields. This
ensured study findings would be relevant and applicable to
specific counsellor situations.
The study population comprised 20 counsellors and 9
Kenya Counselling Association (KCA) accredited counsellor
supervisors. The counsellor sample was drawn from 2
Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) centres, 2 rehabilitation centres and 2 educational institutions. This
diverse population was a helpful representation in terms of
generalizability of the study.
Three data collection instruments utilized were:
Questionnaires, focus group discussions and in-depth
interviews. The study's validity and reliability were ensured
through the two sample populations (counsellor and
counsellor supervisors), test re-test and pre-test
procedures for questionnaires and in-depth interviews.
Tallying identified items checked content validity.
The study findings showed that burnout seriously affected
practitioner effectiveness and led to malpractice and client
harm. The study predictably established that supervision is
an appropriate strategy in the management of counsellor
burnout. The metaphor of motor vehicle maintenance was
utilized in the development of the Holistic Burnout
Supervision Model (HBSM) that focussed on wellness
maintenance of the counsellor in a lifecycle. HBSM
identified two levels in wellness maintenance: Preventative
(servicing) and curative (repair).
The study recommended that counselor - training
institutions should incorporate in their curriculum
burnout and supervision modules. This would create
awareness about burnout and appropriate prevention
strategies at counsellor formation stages. People care
agencies should also institutionalize the burnout
supervision facility in order to ensure counsellor resiliency
and vitality. / Psychology / D. Phil (Psychology)

The experiences and needs of HIV/AIDS counsellors at Settlers Hospital, GrahamstownNulty, Maria January 2004 (has links)
Cognisant of the fact that counselling has become an essential aspect of dealing with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, the researcher aimed to explore the stressors experienced by HIV/AIDS counsellors. It was envisioned that the results obtained would both help to improve the counselling services provided at Settlers Hospital, and assist other organisations to do so. The research focused on how the participants dealt with the dual roles of non-directive listening and the more prescriptive advice-giving, the stressors they experienced and the support structures they had, or needed, to assist them in being more effective HIV/AIDS counsellors. The sample consisted of four HIV/AIDS counsellors working at Settlers Hospital, Grahamstown. The co-ordinator of HIV/AIDS at the hospital was interviewed for collateral information. A qualitative, multiple case study was undertaken. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data which were recorded and transcribed and then constructed into coherently organised personal narratives of each participant’s experiences. A composite description of all the results was arrived at through the use of a reading guide which reduced the data into a thematic content analysis. The analysed data served to present an understanding of the counsellors’ experiences and to enable recommendations to be made which could assist them in pursuing their work more effectively. The findings of this study indicate that HIV/AIDS counselling is an emotionally stressful occupation. Contributory factors include the twofold role of promoting prevention and serving as empathic listeners. Other stressors derive from issues of confidentiality and stigma concerning HIV/AIDS, counsellors’ identification with clients’ experiences and the demographics of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Situational stressors which arise from working as both nurses and counsellors in a public health institution were also identified. Recommendations are made to alleviate the counsellors’ stress in the form of facilitated emotional support groups, professional supervision, managerial support to improve the working environment, and ongoing in-service training.

Towards a Franciscan model of clinical pastoral supervisionBrice, John Henry 30 November 2003 (has links)
Towards a Franciscan model of Clinical pastoral supervision is a study of interaction between two movements: Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Franciscan Spirituality. Francis and Clare were the primary founders of the Franciscan movement and Franciscan spirituality arose from their reflections on their unique response of following Christ. From the early Franciscan sources, essential elements are retrieved. Compassion is illustrated as a key quality of this model through textual analysis of four stories of Francis and his early followers. Clinical Pastoral Education is a result of the contributions of three founders: Keller, Cabot and Boisen. Clinical pastoral supervision (CPS) is a distinguishing concept of CPE. Various models of CPS are categorised according to three paradigms of western society: classical, modern and postmodern. The study concludes by framing a Franciscan model of clinical pastoral supervision. Contemplation and compassion are the two Franciscan characteristics which give this model a unique Franciscan dimension. / New Testament / M.Th.
