Open Courseware initiatives for e-learners in India

Majumder, Apurba Jyoti, Sarma, Gautam Kumar January 2010 (has links)
Paper presented in IDEA 2008 & later published in Book form "ODL system in transition" / Open Courseware is nothing but the repository of the study and learning materials in digital form in the web which is open for every user i.e. Open Access. These repositories envisage to store, index, preserve, distribute and share the digital learning resources with any time access offering interoperability. On the other hand, e-learning covers a myriad set of applications, and processes such as computer based learning, web-based learning, virtual classrooms, etc. What is most significant about the method is that it ensures faster learning at comparatively reduced cost and gives access to more learning resources. In India, a number of institutions are digitizing their course materials and a good number of open courseware have been established e.g. eGyankosh-a National Digital Repository, CEC Learning Object Repository, Indo- German eGurukul on Digital Libraries, NPTEL, NCERT Online Textbooks, UNESCOSALIS e-Learning Portal, etc. This paper presents a scenario of the Open Courseware initiatives in India that can be helpful and necessary to the e-learners.

Online Evaluation in WWW-Based Courseware: The Quizit System

Tinoco, Lucio Cunha 20 January 1996 (has links)
The QUIZIT system has been developed to support adaptive and standard testing, along with automatic grading, record keeping, and test administration using the WWW as a delivery vehicle. We have applied QUIZIT in connection with our NSF-supported Education Infrastructure project on Interactive Learning with a Digital Library in Computer Science to help with evaluation in a master's level course as well as a large freshmen level service course. Preliminary testing in these courses has shown us that QUIZIT is a promising supplement to other forms of evaluation in self-paced education. We also conjecture QUIZIT might be a valuable tool in distance learning environment. / Master of Science

Vale, Kate Livingston January 2004 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / This study is an historical analysis of Brown University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty engagement with network-based courseware development between 1983 and 2003. Specifically, the research focused on how and why faculty engaging in work with Intermedia and Project Athena undertook their projects, what pedagogical models they employed, and what factors contributed to the success and longevity of their courseware. Data collection models included interviews with faculty, project coordinators and technical staff, review of the courseware applications, and examination of internal and external documentation about each project. The findings indicated that faculty tended to utilize the same pedagogical methods in software as they already did in regular teaching, turning to the computer primarily for areas that were difficult to teach or learn; that continued faculty commitment to expanding and updating the software was necessary for sustainability; that faculty perceived their projects as having been successful in increasing student learning and communication despite the fact that formal evaluation was rarely undertaken; and that faculty in the Humanities were more likely to use the network to foster communication and collaboration, while Science and Engineering faculty used the network as a means of disseminating modelling and simulation applications. / 2031-01-02

An empirical study of multisection virtual 3D healthcare learning environments : investigation into the effect of multisection incorporation on the usability of online 3D virtual healthcare learning environments and the production of empirically derived guidelines for designing the learning environments

Nik Ahmad, Nik Siti Hanifah January 2012 (has links)
The thesis investigated the use of combination of sections using learning steps in the development of courseware presentation in the 3D Virtual Worlds platform. The technical objective of the study is to present the design of multisection strategy in developing healthcare course in 3D Virtual World online environment. The main aim of this study is to know the effects of multisection [objective, tutorial (with or without video), quiz and test] sections incorporation in an online 3D Virtual World towards the usability. The empirical research described in this thesis comprised three experimental phases. In the first phase, an initial experiment was carried out with 21 users to explore the usability and learning performance of courseware created using 3D the Virtual World platform of Second Life. The second experiment phase involved an experiment conducted with 30 users to investigate their perception, satisfaction and performance of the role of each main section involved in Virtual World courseware. In the third phase, a total of 30 users experimentally examined a unique approach to the use of video segment added in the Tutorial section of the OTQT framework. The overall obtained results demonstrated the usefulness of the tested multisection to enhance the development of healthcare course in an online learning of 3D Virtual World program. These results in three experiments provided a set of unique and empirically derived guidelines for the design and the use of three multisection frameworks to generate more usable courseware in the 3D Virtual Worlds of an online learning interface. For example, when designing avatars as animated virtual lecturers in e-learning interfaces, specific facial expression and body gestures should be incorporated due to its positive influence in enhancing learners' attitude towards the learning process.

Marriage Enrichment: the Use of Computers to Teach Communication Skills

Ramsay, Annetta 05 1900 (has links)
In this study, a computerized marriage enrichment program that gave couples instruction on communication skills and problem-solving was developed and tested. Couples completed the marriage enrichment courseware together on a computer. Forty couples from a metropolitan area in North Texas volunteered to complete the marriage enrichment courseware. Ten couples were randomly assigned to each of the following four groups: an experimental group that received the pretest followed by treatment and a post-test, a control-wait group that completed pre- and post-tests, an experimental group that received treatment followed by a post-test, and a post-test only control-wait: group. Three hypotheses were generated predicting that experimental subjects would significantly increase their marital communication skills following the treatment and that wives in the pre-test and experimental groups would achieve higher marital communication scores than would husbands. The dependent variable was the score on the Marital Communication Inventory (Bienvenu, 1970). Analyses of variance did not reveal any differences between husbands, wives, and couples at the pre- or post-tests. A three way analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect for treatment (p < .04), but no interaction effects were found. In related findings, a t-test on the post-test minus pre-test difference for wife's scores was significant beyond the .005 level of confidence. Pearson product-moment correlations between the amount of time spent on the marriage enrichment courseware and posttest scores suggested that couples who spent more time completing the program were more likely to achieve higher scores. A regression analysis confirmed the significance of time spent on increased post-test scores (p < .0085). Based on these findings, it seems appropriate to conclude that computerized marriage enrichment courseware is a promising approach for couples who spend at least two hours completing the material.

A proposta nos módulos do Projeto Logos II e a prática docente do professor-cursista em Rondônia /

Gouveia, Cristiane Talita Gromann de. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In the 1970s, the Logos II Project was implemented in some states of Brazil, aiming to train unqualified teachers who were working in the classroom in the first four grades of the first et school. In an situation, this program enabled at the second level and teaching, it mas developed with distance learning in modular system. In Rondônia, studies indicate that the Project was developed from 1976 to 1994, but despite its importance for education, since it was one of the first in the state and represented a possible way of disseminate educational proposals, there is no research about specifically training of the students of Logos II. The purpose of this research is to elaborate a historical interpretation based on the Logos II didactic material, establishing relations with the testimonies of the Rondonians teachers who approach the school daily life of the period in which they studied the project (1976 to 1994). As sources, we considered the modules, legislation, enrollment forms, school records, diplomas and other documents of the trainees referring to Logos II, in addition, we also analyzed the interviews that were carried out with teachers-students in the cities of Ariquemes , Pimenta Bueno and Vilhena, samples of places where the project worked. As a theoretical-methodological contribution, the Ginzburg (1989, 2002; 2008) paradigm, the concept of a document as quoted by Le Goff (2003), the critique of Bloch's paper (2001), the triangulation of data of Mathison (1988), Peter... A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Reuse of Open Learning Resources

FRESCHI, Sergio January 2008 (has links)
Master of Engineering (Research) / Educational standards are having a significant impact on e-Learning. They allow for better exchange of information among different organizations and institutions. They simplify reusing and repurposing learning materials. They give teachers the possibility of personalizing them according to the student’s background and learning speed. Thanks to these standards, off-the-shelf content can be adapted to a particular student cohort’s context and learning needs. The same course content can be presented in different languages. Overall, all the parties involved in the learning-teaching process (students, teachers and institutions) can benefit from these standards and so online education can be improved. To materialize the benefits of standards, learning resources should be structured according to these standards. Unfortunately, there is the problem that a large number of existing e-Learning materials lack the intrinsic logical structure required, and further, when they have the structure, they are not encoded as required. These problems make it virtually impossible to share these materials. This thesis addresses the following research question: How to make the best use of existing open learning resources available on the Internet by taking advantage of educational standards and specifications and thus improving content reusability? In order to answer this question, I combine different technologies, techniques and standards that make the sharing of publicly available learning resources possible in innovative ways. I developed and implemented a three-stage tool to tackle the above problem. By applying information extraction techniques and open e-Learning standards to legacy learning resources the tool has proven to improve content reusability. In so doing, it contributes to the understanding of how these technologies can be used in real scenarios and shows how online education can benefit from them. In particular, three main components were created which enable the conversion process from unstructured educational content into a standard compliant form in a systematic and automatic way. An increasing number of repositories with educational resources are available, including Wikiversity and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenCourseware. Wikivesity is an open repository containing over 6,000 learning resources in several disciplines and for all age groups [1]. I used the OpenCourseWare repository to evaluate the effectiveness of my software components and ideas. The results show that it is possible to create standard compliant learning objects from the publicly available web pages, improving their searchability, interoperability and reusability.
