Knowledge of student nurses of cost concepts in Health economics

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the knowledge of student nurses regarding the cost concepts in health economics, specifically the efficient allocation of resources and determining the cost of interventions, in order to prepare them to deliver cost-effective yet quality nursing care. An explorative and descriptive quantitative design was used. A structured self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Respondents were student nurses studying towards becoming professional nurses in their final year of study (comprehensive programme). The results revealed an apparent lack of knowledge among student nurses regarding cost concepts in health economics, although respondents agreed that knowledge of health economics is essential for nursing practice. The results led the researcher to draw a strong conclusion that there is a need for the inclusion of a module regarding health economics in the nursing curriculum and in continuous professional development (CPD) workshops and in-service training. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

The sum of their fears : the Committee on the Present Danger, the demise of détente, and threat inflation, 1976-1980

This dissertation seeks to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the political pressure group the Committee on the Present Danger (CPD), which formed in 1976. The group's establishment, attainment of credibility, and influence in critical national security debates during the late 1970s has not yet been given sufficient attention. The Committee on the Present Danger has often been interpreted as a disingenuous propaganda group that dishonestly compiled an alarmist message to deceive politicians and journalists of the threat posed by the Soviet Union. However, the dissertation argues that the Committee's alarmism was genuine. The fact that CPD board members themselves became so fearful of the Soviet threat is the most striking aspect of the group's first four years of operation, and is the primary focus of this study. An examination of the group's formation and activities from 1976 to 1980 permits a more sophisticated appreciation of the group's goals, the promotion of its views, and the effects of its campaign on national security debates during this period. The dissertation adopts a chronological approach that recognises the creeping alarmism of the CPD over these years: warning of the dangers of détente gave way to prophesising an imminent Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Keeping the CPD as the focus of study in this period permits one to argue that the Committee's members, as a private citizens' group without government oversight and a shared worst-case methodology for assessing national security risks, sincerely came to believe in the veracity of their analysis of imminent Soviet military expansion. Committee experts generated and publicised a number of metrics that purported to demonstrate a military imbalance between the Soviet Union and the United States. Over time, and seemingly confirmed by alleged Soviet global aggression, the Committee came to believe that their worst-case estimates reflected reality.

Use of Coherent Point Drift in computer vision applications

This thesis presents the novel use of Coherent Point Drift in improving the robustness of a number of computer vision applications. CPD approach includes two methods for registering two images - rigid and non-rigid point set approaches which are based on the transformation model used. The key characteristic of a rigid transformation is that the distance between points is preserved, which means it can be used in the presence of translation, rotation, and scaling. Non-rigid transformations - or affine transforms - provide the opportunity of registering under non-uniform scaling and skew. The idea is to move one point set coherently to align with the second point set. The CPD method finds both the non-rigid transformation and the correspondence distance between two point sets at the same time without having to use a-priori declaration of the transformation model used. The first part of this thesis is focused on speaker identification in video conferencing. A real-time, audio-coupled video based approach is presented, which focuses more on the video analysis side, rather than the audio analysis that is known to be prone to errors. CPD is effectively utilised for lip movement detection and a temporal face detection approach is used to minimise false positives if face detection algorithm fails to perform. The second part of the thesis is focused on multi-exposure and multi-focus image fusion with compensation for camera shake. Scale Invariant Feature Transforms (SIFT) are first used to detect keypoints in images being fused. Subsequently this point set is reduced to remove outliers, using RANSAC (RANdom Sample Consensus) and finally the point sets are registered using CPD with non-rigid transformations. The registered images are then fused with a Contourlet based image fusion algorithm that makes use of a novel alpha blending and filtering technique to minimise artefacts. The thesis evaluates the performance of the algorithm in comparison to a number of state-of-the-art approaches, including the key commercial products available in the market at present, showing significantly improved subjective quality in the fused images. The final part of the thesis presents a novel approach to Vehicle Make & Model Recognition in CCTV video footage. CPD is used to effectively remove skew of vehicles detected as CCTV cameras are not specifically configured for the VMMR task and may capture vehicles at different approaching angles. A LESH (Local Energy Shape Histogram) feature based approach is used for vehicle make and model recognition with the novelty that temporal processing is used to improve reliability. A number of further algorithms are used to maximise the reliability of the final outcome. Experimental results are provided to prove that the proposed system demonstrates an accuracy in excess of 95% when tested on real CCTV footage with no prior camera calibration.

The management of continuous professional development at a TVET college in Kwazulu Natal

This exploration investigates lecturers’ experiences of the role of professional development on TVET lecturers. Lecturers’ professional development is often viewed as the source to effective learning developments. Lecturer effectiveness at TVET Colleges depends on the constant professional development to avoid encounters that they face due to endless differences taking place in technology and national curriculum. The result of proper professional development of lecturers is that both students and the organisation benefit from it. Hence, lecturers are likely to be subjected to continuous professional development to be well informed with the constant adjustments taking place in the education system. This occurs as the lecturers are pressurised to participate in a variety of regular professional development programmes that are not designed to suit their specific requirements. This leads to, professional development becoming ineffective in assisting the lecturer developing their training in their specific areas of knowledge. A literature review was used to determine what other writers say about the concept of professional development. A qualitative study was employed and two research instruments were used: semi-structured interview sessions and document analysis.Information was collected through the interviews, centred on pre-planned interview questions. Purposive sampling was used and nine experienced participants were selected for this study. Lecturers’ were questioned about their experiences of professional development at a TVET College in the Kwazulu Natal district. The conversations were recorded, translated and scrutinised to discover lecturers’ opinions about professional development in their college. This investigation was guided by three important questions: How effective are staff development programmes managed for lecturers in their areas of specialisation? Secondly, How effective are the policies regarding staff development in TVET Colleges? Finally, what role does senior management play in CPD in Majuba TVET College? Findings indicate that the principals of the colleges are not managing the continuous professional development of lectures. It is left upon the lecturers themselves to manage their professional development. It is expected that this investigation and the literature review will influence the management of professional development for the advantage of lecturers and the college. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Besides the advances of the neuroimaging techniques, other techniques such as non-invasive brain modulation have also been studied such as the transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and the transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) in the involvement of cognitive functions in the area of calculation. This study aimed at investigating the impact of anodal TDCS applied over the left dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex (LDLPFC), right parietal cortex (RPC), left parietal cortex (LPC) while the subject was performing multiplication operations. Fifteen healthy volunteers, students of psychology, aged between 18 and 30 years old, have held subtests of the WAIS III and the multiplication task. The results showed that the anodal TDCS over the RPC improved the performance of men regarding the number of rightness. The influence of TDCS on volunteers who had worse performance took place not on complex tasks, but simple arithmetical ones. Besides, the influence of TDCS on volunteers who had better performance was in complex tasks, not simple ones. These results show that the effects of the TDCS on a certain function depend on the baseline values of each volunteer. The other stimulation conditions over the LDLPFC and LPC did not show any significant results. The TDCS can bring a beneficial effect in calculation tasks, depending on the intensity, polarity, time and location of stimulation, resulting in the increased or diminished cortex excitability. / Diferentes habilidades matemáticas vêm sendo investigadas ao longo dos tempos e, com o avanço das técnicas de neuroimagem, como PET (Tomografia por emissão de Pósitrons) e fMRI (ressonância magnética funcional) componentes centrais no processamento aritmético vêm sendo identificados em córtex parietal e pré-frontal. Além do avanço das técnicas de neuroimagem, outras técnicas como de modulação cerebral não-invasiva também vêm sendo estudadas, como Estimulação Magnética Transcraniana (EMT) e a Estimulação Transcraniana por Corrente Contínua (ETCC) no envolvimento das funções cognitivas com a área de cálculo. Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o impacto da ETCC anódica quando aplicada no Córtex Pré-Frontal Dorsolateral (CPFDLE), Córtex Parietal Direito (CPD), Córtex Parietal Esquerdo (CPE) no desempenho em operações de multiplicação. Quinze voluntários saudáveis, estudantes de psicologia, com faixa etária entre 18 e 30 anos, realizaram subtestes do WAIS III e a tarefa de multiplicação. Os resultados desse estudo mostraram que a ETCC anódica aplicada no CPD melhorou o desempenho dos homens em relação ao número de acertos. A influência da ETCC em participantes com pior desempenho em Aritmética se deu em tarefa simples de multiplicação, mas não complexa, ao passo que a influência da ETCC em participantes com melhor desempenho em Aritmética se deu em tarefa complexa de multiplicação, mas não em simples. Tais resultados sinalizam que os efeitos da estimulação em uma determinada função dependem dos valores de linha de base de cada participante As outras condições de estimulações, CPFDLE e CPE não resultaram em efeitos significativos. A ETCC pode produzir um efeito benéfico em tarefas de cálculo, dependendo da intensidade, polaridade, tempo e localização da estimulação, podendo resultar em aumento ou diminuição na excitabilidade do córtex.

The theoretical part through the analysis of different theoretical approaches to further education, defines and describes the issue of further education of teachers , the system - specific conditions , areas and its financing. It deals with the areas of the teacher's profession, their competences , career structure and professional standards. The empirical part of this dissertation, based on empirical research, describes the system of further education of teachers both in terms of school leadership , and from the perspective of teachers and it maps specific factors affecting the quality of the current further education of teachers.
