Considering formal rules are the same, then why such results are so distinguished? This research supports the fact that these results are a direct consequence of the quality of institutions defined as longstanding social rules established and built in social interactions. For institutions one understands; organizational structures, formal and non-formal rules, social trust, thinking behaviors and its evolution as well as routines. Using Pronaf Rural Credit as a background this study measures and compares results obtained in the rural areas of Serid?, Sert?o do Apodi, Mato Grande, Ass?-Mossor?, Trairi, Potengi and Alto Oeste. The dimensions of measurement considered were: economics, social and guarantee of transparency. The study considers a sample of 402 Group B farming families. It also elaborates a socio-economic profile of these families in the considered areas and underlines the main causes for defaulted loans, difficulties to improve family income and results of access to Pronaf B credit line, as well as it proposes solutions to surpass obstacles to improve the efficiency of this credit line / A partir de ampla revis?o da literatura institucionalista, o trabalho procura responder as perguntas de pesquisa: Por que o cr?dito rural Pronaf grupo B apresenta bons resultados junto aos agricultores familiares em alguns territ?rios rurais do Rio Grande do Norte e em outros n?o? As regras formais s?o iguais, ent?o por que os resultados s?o diferentes? A pesquisa sustenta que esses resultados derivam da qualidade das institui??es, definidas como sistemas duradouros de regras sociais estabelecidas e embutidas que estruturam as intera??es sociais. Estruturas organizacionais, regras formais e informais, confian?a social, h?bitos de pensamento e sua evolu??o, rotinas s?o todas institui??o. Tendo como pano de fundo o cr?dito rural Pronaf, a disserta??o avalia e compara os resultados do Pronaf B nos territ?rios rurais Serid?, Sert?o do Apodi, Mato Grande, Ass?-Mossor?, Trair?, Potengi e Alto Oeste, atrav?s de indicadores referentes ?s dimens?es - econ?mica, garantia de transpar?ncia e social -, elaboradas a partir de uma amostra de 402 agricultores familiares do grupo B. Por sua vez, tra?a o perfil socioecon?mico desses agricultores no conjunto desses territ?rios rurais. Al?m disso, o estudo aponta as principais causas da inadimpl?ncia, dificuldades para melhorar a renda e resultados do acesso ao cr?dito.
