Faith, obedience, and justification: Current evangelical departures from sola fideWaldron, Samuel Eldon 12 May 2005 (has links)
The thesis of this study is that influential evangelicals have adopted views regarding the relation of faith, obedience, and justification (or, in other words, justification sola fide ) that are in conflict with the historic, Reformation doctrine of justification sola fide . Having departed from the historic, Reformation doctrine, their professions of holding justification sola fide are misleading and meaningless for the purpose of certifying their evangelical identity.
To establish the unity of the Protestant tradition with regard to the meaning of sola fide , the views of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the major Protestant creeds and confessions are examined.
The thesis that unity existed among Protestants with regard to sola fide requires the examination of the development of the doctrine in Luther found in chapter 2. It shows that Luther's views gradually developed in his spiritual experience and that the major features of his mature understanding of sola fide are consistent with Calvin's systematic development of sola fide .
In chapter 3 the views of John Calvin are examined. Three key perspectives on the meaning of sola fide through which the Reformation tradition can be examined and the views of current evangelicals tested are isolated: the passive definition of justifying faith, the distinction between justifying faith and obedience, and the dichotomy between the law and the gospel.
Chapter 4 examines the Reformation tradition. An accurate assessment of the meaning of sola fide for that tradition may be best achieved by the examination of its a major creeds and confessions. The three key perspectives on the meaning of justification by faith alone previously isolated are found consistently embedded in the 16 th and 17 th century creeds of Protestantism.
Having seen the unified meaning of justification sola fide in Calvin, Luther, and the Protestant tradition, chapters 5, 6, and 7 examine the views of three influential evangelical theologians in light of this crucial tradition. The views of Daniel Fuller, Norman Shepherd, and Don Garlington are weighed in the balance of the historic Reformation doctrine of justification by faith alone and found to depart from the historic doctrine. Chapter 8 seeks to make clear a number of important conclusions from the study as a whole. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Sosio-politieke interpretasie van die Dordtse leerreëls / A socio-political interpretation of the Canons of DordtCilliers, Andries Pretorius 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is an attempt at a contextual interpre
tation of the Canons of Dordt, by means of an analysis of various models of historical
reconstruction. The role of Protestant scholasticism is discussed, as well as the traditional
Reformed interpretation of the historical context of the Synod of Dordt, and the liberal and
Marxist interpretations. It is argued that the Reformed idea of theocracy provides the best model
for understanding the context of the Canons. A philosophical, sociological and historical
analysis of this idea, as it is expressed in the Belgic Confession, Article 36, renders the
conclusion that it is the self-legitimation of the church that is very problematical in this
regard. This self-legitimation is intensified in the Canons. In the historical context this
meant that the Canons provided the church and the government with a legitimation of
authoritarian rule. This legitimation served to unite various political and
economical interests in opposition to peace with Spain. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Sistematiese Teologie)

Kerklidmaatskap : 'n kerkregtelike studieSpies, Johannes Hendrik January 1996 (has links)
Thesis (DTh)-- Stellenbosch University, 1996. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Questions and problems concerning church membership are plenty and surface regularly in church
. meetings. The way in which the church operates reflects a particular concept of the church. The·
ideal is that way the church functi~ns according to the church law must express the essence of the
church. Therefore it is important to ask questions on church membership in the light of the
scriptures and the confession. This study shows that there is tension between the concept of the
church which comes forwardin the Scriptures and the confession on the one hand and that which
is reflected in the practical handling of membership issues on the other hand.
An investigation into certain historic backgrounds, the conventions of a variety of churches on the
issue of membership as well as the views of church members from· the Presbytery of the Dutch
Reformed Church in Pietermaritzburg was necessary to acquire insight into the present situation.
These investigations have shown that there are several customs and views on membership issues
that do not have a sound theological basis. On what membership means and how it must be
handled in practice there is also a wide variety of opinions.
From the Old and New Testaments it becomes evident that a complete definition of the church is
not possible. The Bible speaks in different ways about thechurch. God's presence and initiative
in the church as his people of the covenant is that which makes the faith community the church.
Faith, the relation with Jahwe in the Old Testament and with Jesus Christ iri the New Testament,
is that which distinguishes the members of the faith community from those who do not belong to
it.
The handling of membership developed in such a way that membership issues constitutes the
delimitation of churches amongst each other. That hampers the visible unity of the church. In the
last chapter an attempt was made to formulate guidelines for the handling of membership in such
a way that the unity of the church is emphasized while the confessional base of the church is
protected at the same time. In this process a distinction is made between the delimitation of the
church against the world on the one hand and the delimitation of churches amongst each other on
the other hand. An attempt is made to unite the soteriological and the canonical meaning of the
baptism in the membership practice. Baptism, as the sacrament of incorporation .into the church
of Jesus Christ is fundamental in the acknowledgment of membership and membership privileges
in the congregation.

is nie.

Filosofiese analise van aspekte van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk se Geloofsleer / A philosophical analysis of aspects of the articles of faith of the Dutch Reformed ChurchCrouse, Johan Theodor 01 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans with abstracts in Afrikaans, English and Zulu.
Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M.A. (Philosophy)
