O interesse por esta questão nasce de histórias incômodas ouvidas em minha infância e ganha novos matizes a partir de uma pesquisa realizada no final da graduação em Geografia no ano de 2004. O presente trabalho é construído em coerência com os pressupostos da investigação qualitativa e tem como objetivo conhecer as representações de campo e cidade das 12 crianças participantes, através de seus desenhos e falas, ansiando perceber as concepções que lhes estão subjacentes. As descobertas da pesquisa são pensadas à luz de referências teóricas como Milton Santos, Paulo Freire, Rafael Straforini e Helena Coppetti Callai, na defesa de que a Geografia tem uma função social de auxílio na leitura do lugar-mundo. Se campo e cidade não são espaços independentes, argumento que eles precisam ser pensados no espaço escolar por conta das relações complexas guardadas entre eles. / Understanding rural area and urban area, with singular realities and categories but not dissociable, is the focus in this research with the representation of these concepts by children, between 8 years old and 12 years old, from. Juiz de Fora - MG with considerable urban experience. The interest in this issue comes from childhood stories and gained a new direction with a study realized in the final semester of Geography in 2004. The present work is built according to qualitative investigation and aims to know the rural area and urban area representations of the 12 children participants through drawings and speeches, wishing to notice the conceptions that are subjacent. This investigation is based on Milton Santos, Paulo Freire, Rafael Straforini e Helena Coppetti Callai theories to argument that geography has a social role assistance in place/world reading. If rural area and urban area are not independent places, I argue that they need to be thought in the education field because of the complex relation between them.
