The use of intelligence led policing in crime prevention by the South African Police ServiceMashiloane, Ntja Patrick 06 November 2014 (has links)
The advent of democracy in South Africa brought hope for freedom and prosperity for millions of South Africans. The country also experienced an increase in violent crime during those early years of democracy. In order to deal with the threat of crime the government had to develop policing strategies which would eradicate crime and fear of crime. As a young democracy South Africa had to look for policing models which has successfully decreased the high crime rate in developed countries. Fortunately the western democracies like the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia had some of these answers. Firstly it was community policing, then sector policing, and finally intelligence led policing. This research focuses on the intelligence led policing model by discussing its building blocks in chronological order as follows. Firstly is the historical background of intelligence; Secondly, is information collection; Thirdly is crime analysis; and Fourthly is the Intelligence-cycle, with specific focus on the implementation process in England in the United Kingdom; New Jersey in the United States of America, South Australia State in Australia; and in the Republic of South Africa. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the implementation of intelligence led policing by the South African Police Service / Police Practice / D. Litt. et Phil. (Police Science)

Misdaadvoorkoming by besigheidskomplekse : 'n gevallestudie by die Centurionsentrum / Crime prevention at business complexes : a case study at Centurion CentreCoetzer, Carina 11 1900 (has links)
Centurionsentrum is as studiegeval verkies omdat daar
moontlike toekomstige navorsing is gemaak.

Newman's defensible space theory was used in the analysis. Centurion Centre was chosen as a study
case because it has an open plan design. This has the effect that some parts of the centre cannot be
closed at night. Centurion Centre was described in terms of the defensible space mechanisms. A
crime prevention model was drawn up for Centurion Centre and recommendations were made
regarding the security of future designs for business complexes. This field of study and approach to
crime prevention is, however, very new in South Africa and suggestions for more research have been
made.

Beveiliging in die plaaslike owerheidsektorVan Vuuren, J. W. J., 1952- 11 1900 (has links)
The devolution of political power to local authority level obliges local authorities to play a greater role in determining the future of cities and towns. Within the framework of national security, local authorities as employers and owners of property have a responsibility towards the safeguarding of people, the upholding and continuation of services and the protection of council property. As legal autonomous bodies, local authorities manage their security departments in their own peculiar way which is not necessarily the most cost effective and efficient. The expansion of private and public security services necessitates orderly development and coordination of services with reference to prescribed acceptable standards. This research is an attitudinal study of the nature, scope, place, image, status, functions and training of white local authority security officers in an attempt to establish a point of departure in order to facilitate the sound managing of local authority security. / Police Practice / M.A. (Polisiekunde)

The consequences of the community and police relationships on crime prevention in Tzaneen area of Limpopo Province.Mokhomole, Tumiso Desmond. January 2015 (has links)
M. Tech. Policing / The White Paper on Safety and Security (1998: 7-8) states that in the new democratic order, South Africans demand and deserve accountable, effective and service oriented policing. This means that policing in a democracy requires professional law enforcement which does not infringe upon human rights. It further requires a concerted effort by government, in partnership with civil society, to prevent crime before it occurs. The new South African Police Services under the new dispensation introduced in 1994 covers new policing programmes such as Community Policing Forum, Sector Policing and Neighborhood Watch, for the purpose of bringing the policing department to the proximity of the society. The main objectives of the research are to investigate the reasons for the failure of the police and the community to maintain cordial relationships on crime prevention in Tzaneen area, reasons for lower success rate in terms of apprehending and arresting of criminals, lack of monitoring by police commissioners of Tzaneen to ensure the quality of relationship, and to recommend ways of ensuring or improving good relationship between the police and the community in fighting or preventing crime in Tzaneen area, Limpopo province.

Community policing as a crime prevention strategy for the Cape Town City PoliceVisser, A. J. (Abraham Johannes) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to establish if community policing is being
implemented by the Cape Town City Police and if so, to what extent. The study
further aims to establish whether the full implementation of community policing
could be expected to have a positive impact on the reduction of crime in Cape
Town.
To this end, the reader is presented with a brief overview of local government in
South Africa, an in-depth discussion of the transformation process which resulted
in the current municipal structures, and an introduction to the non-traditional local
government function of crime prevention. Local government's increasing
involvement in crime prevention and the resulting establishment of municipal
police services are discussed and it is argued that crime prevention strategies of
municipal police services should build on existing local government efforts and
should therefore focus on removing the root causes of crime.
Further to the above, a detailed discussion of community policing is embarked
upon. This section provides a theoretical account of what community policing
entails, as well as a theoretical framework against which the researcher's
empirical study with regard to the implementation of community policing by the
Cape Town City Police, can be planned, executed and the results thereof be
evaluated. It deals with the relevant historical perspectives, presents a workable definition for community policing that will direct the further conduct of the
research and provides detailed discussions on each of the elements of
community policing. Implementation of this policing method with specific
reference to South Africa, the requirements of a community police officer, as well
as the relationship between fear, disorder and crime are also dealt with here.
The results of the researcher's empirical study are furthermore presented and it
is concluded that certain steps have indeed been taken by the Cape Town City
Police towards the institutionalisation of community policing and that the full
implementation of community policing by this service can be expected to have a
significant impact on the prevention of crime in Cape Town.
In closing, the reader is presented with practical recommendations which will
ensure the effective implementation of community policing by the Cape Town
City Police.
misdaad in Kaapstad sal hê.
in Kaapstad sal hê.
verseker.

Crime prevention and the criminal justice systems of Nigeria and South Africa : a comparative perspective.Olutola, Adewale Adisa. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (DTech. degree in Policing)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011. / A qualitative research design, using the research technique of interviews with indirect observation, was adopted for this study. A total of twenty (20) crime prevention practitioners in the criminal justice structures of Nigeria and South Africa were interviewed for the purpose of data gathering. The interview questions were standardised but open-ended. The main findings are the following: At present, none of the criminal justice institutions in Nigeria and South Africa can prevent crime. Long term crime prevention is presently not possible in Nigeria and South Africa as the root causes of crime in the two countries lie outside the control of the criminal justice systems. The root causes of crime in the two countries were identified as being, among others, dysfunctional family settings, a history of violence, accessibility and availability of criminological commodities, real need and poverty, inequality among the population groups, greed on the part of those that have, and poor leadership. The main recommendation is as follows: The governments of Nigeria and South Africa need to focus their attention on the root causes of crime and not only on the criminal justice institutions.
