Over the last few decades there has been a statistical increase for the use of criminal background check. Organizations that operates in the business of transport and logistics have developed the control of criminal records before employment as a standardized recruitment tool. This, despite of the lack of constitutional support for the use of it. This study aims to study and problematizing the use of the criminal records. Furthermore, this study aims towards a deeper understanding of how organizations reasons and how the assessment is made if an individual has been previously convicted. The empirical material is gathered through qualitative interviews with representatives from different organizations working within the bransch. The results shows that despite the lack of constitutional support, all informants base their assessment in a similar way. Theoretically, this indicates that a moral structure has been developed around this issue. Through the study's theoretical framework, the study’s findings indicate that the criminal record is perceived to contribute to producing trust, reducing risks and increasing organizations security.

The Veracity of Self-Reported Criminal Records among NDSU Students

Campus safety and security are important concerns for colleges and universities. One way security is addressed is through utilization of self-report questions about criminal backgrounds during the admissions process. The current study evaluates this admissions policy by using a systematic random sample of 1,400 students to compare self-reported criminal backgrounds with criminal records listed in four online databases. Results indicate that two individuals within the sample failed to report their criminal backgrounds which included simple assault, burglary, theft, possession of controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. While the failed reporting rate appears low, caution should be taken interpreting the results. A number of policy implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Fighting for A Second Chance: Policies & Practices that Impact College Students with Criminal Record's Experiences In Traditional Higher Education Settings

abstract: Very little information is known about the experiences of graduate students with criminal records in higher education. As such, the purpose of this dissertation seeks to understand the various factors that impact graduate students with criminal records experiences in higher education. The overarching purpose is broken down into three individual research papers. The first research paper uses a thematic analysis to assess the ways Arizona’s four-year public higher education institutions utilize their power, via written policies, to deter, ban, or prohibit college students with criminal records from actively pursuing or participating in academia. Specifically, I provide a robust overview of all the current policies practices that target college students with criminal records in traditional higher education settings. The next two papers draw its attention to how college students with criminal records navigate the academy. Specifically, I seek to understand the experience(s) of living through institutional barriers as a graduate student while possessing a criminal record using Van Manen’s Hermeneutical Phenomenology. In the last paper, I seek to understand the experience(s) of living through criminalized microaggressions as a graduate student while possessing a criminal record using Van Manen’s Hermeneutical Phenomenology.
