Environmental Management in the Transport and Logistics Sector: Findings from a Qualitative Study

There is an increasing importance of sustainability in the development of companies' business strategies. Due to its impact on the environment, this is particularly essential for companies of the transport and logistics sector. The paper explores several factors that influence the environmental behaviour of transport and logistics companies in Austria. It discusses the importance of the economic impact on environmental management decision in detail and analyses the sector's specific characteristics in terms of environmental behaviour. A case-based approach involving multiple field studies with face-to-face expert interviews and secondary data analysis was used to evaluate environmental performance and specific practices. Due to various factors like a lack of end-user contact and high levels of competition, the transport and logistics sector does not show much environmentally friendly behaviour. We can confirm that the economic factor is crucial for companies' decisions on the implementation of environmental practices. Using selected cases, we will demonstrate how environmental measures contribute to overall business performance. Furthermore, suggestions are given as to how the government can further support transport and logistics companies in this regard. Because there is little evidence of tangible environmental practices in the sector of transport and logistics and their impact on the business performance, this study is both exploratory and explanatory in its nature. The processes of productive restructuring, the industrial deconcentration of São Paulo and the improvement of the transports and communications infrastructures in the country favored the formation of economic development axes. Along the axes there are significant industrial, commercial and service activities, particularly in midsize cities. So one can understand that there exists, due to the relationship between these processes, the deepening of spatial and territorial inequalities, which are, somewhat, fomented by the government, since with economic globalization and neoliberal ideas the state is subordinated to the interests of productive agents working or intending to work in the territory. As a result of these economic and political relations the state always seeks to adapt the territory and the norms systems for the fully functioning of productive activities against the interests of the economically underprivileged population. Att avlasta eller belasta? : En kvalitativ studie om användningen av utdrag ur belastningsregistret inom transport och logistik

Over the last few decades there has been a statistical increase for the use of criminal background check. Organizations that operates in the business of transport and logistics have developed the control of criminal records before employment as a standardized recruitment tool. This, despite of the lack of constitutional support for the use of it. This study aims to study and problematizing the use of the criminal records. Furthermore, this study aims towards a deeper understanding of how organizations reasons and how the assessment is made if an individual has been previously convicted. The empirical material is gathered through qualitative interviews with representatives from different organizations working within the bransch. The results shows that despite the lack of constitutional support, all informants base their assessment in a similar way. Theoretically, this indicates that a moral structure has been developed around this issue. Through the study's theoretical framework, the study’s findings indicate that the criminal record is perceived to contribute to producing trust, reducing risks and increasing organizations security.

In the theoretical part are explained the basic logistic terms. In the analysis of current situation in the company is described a current progress of a contract, an analysis of processes in the company and costs. In the last part of the thesis are final proposals which should help to the better progress of a contract, to save time, costs and to increase satisfaction of a customers and also leadership of the company.

В третьей главе подробно описан проект создания терминально-складского комплекса. Описаны характеристики планируемой застройки, этапы реализации проекта и проведен анализ финансовых результатов проекта. В заключении сформулированы основные выводы и обобщены результаты исследования. / Structure of master's thesis includes introduction, three chapters, conclusion, list of used sources and applications. In the introduction the choice of the research topic, its topicality, formulates the goal and objectives, defined the subject and object of research, its theoretical and methodological foundations, sources of information, formulated the scientific novelty. In the first Chapter the approaches of scientists to definition of the concept of development, highlighted the types of development and peculiarities of its functioning. The second Chapter analyzes the market of warehouse real estate. The classification of warehouses. As well as the basic problems of transport and logistics infrastructure of the region. The third Chapter describes in detail the project of creation of terminal and warehouse complex. Describes the characteristics of the proposed development, the stages of the project and the analysis of the financial results of the project. In conclusion the main conclusions and summarizes the results of the stud.

Cette thèse vise à explorer la mise en route des politiques de développement de formation professionnelle dans les entreprises de transport et de la logistique en République de Djibouti. Nous posons l'hypothèse générale que l'appropriation des Tics par l'entreprise est un vecteur important de développement économique pour l'entreprise. Ainsi trois hypothèses opérationnelles ont été étudiées et vérifiées : 1) Le niveau de compétence en tic et le degré d’utilisation est très important. Pour que l’entreprise soit performante économiquement, il faut qu’elle développe les compétences en tic de son personnel et de ses cadres ; 2) Le plan de formation professionnelle est un outil clé dans la gestion prévisionnelle des compétences et des emplois. Pour développer les compétences en tic il faut que l’entreprise prévoie un plan de formation. Une entreprise qui met en place un plan de formation professionnelle a conscience de l’importance de compétence en tic et dispose d'un potentiel de développement économique ; 3) les tics sont des outils de développement personnels et professionnels. Deux questionnaires destinés d'un côté aux employés de l'autre aux dirigeants ont été conçu pour investiguer le terrain et vérifier les hypothèses émises ci-dessus. La méthode privilégiée est à la fois quantitative et à la fois qualitative. / This thesis aims at exploring the implementation of the development policies of vocational training in the transport companies and of logistics in Djibouti. We ask the general assumption that the appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies by the company is an important vector of economic development for the company. And three operational assumptions were reviewed and verified: 1) ICT skill level and degree of use is very important. For the company be economically efficient. It has to tick develops the skills of its staff and its management; 2) The training plan is a key tool in the management planning of skills and jobs. To develop the skills tic must now provide a training plan. A company that sets up a training plan recognizes the importance of competence tic and has a potential for economic development; 3) ICT are personal and professional development tools. Two questionnaires from one side to the employees of the other leaders were designed to investigate the field and verify the assumptions made above. The preferred method is both quantitative and qualitative.

Bakgrund: Budget är en av de centrala delarna inom ekonomistyrning och är vanligt förekommande i många företag. Trots det finns missnöje med budgeten kring att den är tidskrävande och det är svårt att förutspå framtiden. Inte minst i en så pass snabbt föränderlig och oförutsägbar bransch som transport- och logistikföretag tillhör. Från missnöjet uppkom konceptet med budgetlös styrning, som bygger på prognoser och andra tillvägagångssätt för kontroller. Trots missnöjet använder sig företag fortfarande ofta av ett traditionellt budgetsystem, vilket väcker frågetecken kring varför det är så.    Syfte: Uppsatsens syfte baseras på undersökningar om hur budgetarbetet inom transport- och logistikföretag har påverkats av nya omständigheter i omvärlden. Det kommer utredas om det traditionella budgetsystemet numera präglas av icke budgetsystem inom ramarna för budgetlös styrning. Resultaten av denna uppsats ska sedan kunna vara en grund för andra företag att dra lärdom av och bidra med ytterligare ett synsätt för utvecklingen av budget.   Metod: För att genomföra studien har vi valt att använda oss av ett kvalitativt synsätt med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Fem personer med någon form av ekonomiansvar från fem företag med olika storlek och geografisk utbredning har intervjuats med frågor om deras ekonomistyrning, med fokus på budgeten.      Slutsats: Den slutsats som går att dra från studien är att många företag använder sig av budget. Flera av dem har implementerat kompletteringar som går att kopplas till det budgetlösa styrsättet, men har inte övergett budgeten helt. Det finns ett generellt missnöje med budgetprocessen hos respondenterna, men konceptet budgetlös styrning är förbisett, eftersom få vet vad det skulle innebära i praktiken. / Background: Budget is one of the central aspects in financial management and is used in many organizations. Although, there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the process concerning the amount of time it takes and it is difficult to predict the future. Not at least in an industry so rapidly changing and unpredictable as transport and logistics. Based on this dissatisfaction, the concept of beyond budgeting arised. Beyond budgeting focuses more on forecasts and other forms of control. Despite this dissatisfaction, organizations and companies still use the traditional budgeting systems, and the question is why that is.    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether budgeting processes in companies in the transport and logistics industry have been affected by new circumstances in the world. It will be investigated if the traditional budgeting systems has been characterized with the beyond budgeting ideas. The results of this study will later on be a base for other companies to learn from and contribute with a new approach for the development of budget.    Method: To complete this study we have chosen the use of a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews. Five people with some kind of financial responsibility from five companies of different sizes and geographical distribution have been interviewed with questions about their financial management, with focus on the budget.    Conclusion: The conclusion drawn from this study is that many companies use budgets. Some of them have implemented improvements which can be connected to beyond budgeting, but the budget has not been completely abandoned. There is a general dissatisfaction regarding the budget process among the respondents, but the concept beyond budgeting is overlooked, since few of them do not know how it would be involved in practice.

Less well-known is Richard O'Connor, largely because of his own disregard for publicity. They were two very different types of personality. Both, however, demonstrated command skills and operational strategic insights which enabled them to compensate for the British Army's shortcomings in armour in 1940. They were able to use what they had - simple motorization - and adapt it away from stereotyped concepts of logistical employment, which they replaced with beneficial operational strategic utilization; Montgomery during the Flanders Campaign (1940) and O'Connor in his Libyan Campaign (1940-41). The two cases indicate that advantage in warfare does not merely rely on numbers or on superior or inferior armaments.
