Inicia-se com a história dos periódicos, aprofunda-se nas características dos partidos, círculos e de alguns personagens, para finalmente permitir uma compreensão da reforma eleitoral de 1881 e da crise política de 1884. Esse trabalho enriqueceu os conhecimentos sobre o movimento republicano, contestou a inexistência de abolicionismo em Minas Gerais e demonstrou a importância dos mecanismos institucionais, com destaque para as eleições, nas lutas políticas. / This is a detailed study of social history and politics of the Empire, between 1876 and 1884, using sources such as the newspapers published during this period in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais. Starts with the history of periodic, deepens on the characteristics of parties, circles and some characters, to finally allow an understanding of electoral reform in 1881 and the political crisis of 1884. This work enriched the knowledge of the republican movement, denied the absence of abolitionism in Minas Gerais and demonstrated the importance of institutional mechanisms, such as elections, in political struggles.
