Criteria-based content analysis : an experimental investigation with childrenJoffe, Risha D. 05 1900 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to experimentally test the Undeutsch Hypothesis, which holds that children's statements based on self-experienced events are qualitatively and quantitatively different from statements based on coaching. Specifically, this study tested the validity of Criteria-Based Content Analysis (CBCA, a system for assessing the credibility of eyewitness reports) for discriminating between credible and non credible eyewitness reports by children. As well, two other tests of the quantitative and qualitative differences between credible and noncredible eyewitness reports were included. One hundred and forty-two children (74 Grade4, 68 Grade 2) were tested in three conditions: (1) Live Event, in which children were actively involved in a staged event (the event was complex and included many features considered relevant to credibility), (2) Heavily Coached, in which children did not experience the event but were told in detail about it (including details which, if reported, would be assigned significance by CBCA),and (3) Lightly Coached, in which children did not experience the event but were provided with a brief account of it, with the expectation that they would fill in details to make their reports believable. Children were asked to recall the event in individual interviews. Transcribed interviews were evaluated using CBCA. Results of the study provided mixed support for the Undeutsch Hypothesis. For Grade 4 children, CBCA significantly discriminated between the Live Event and Lightly Coached conditions, but not between the Live Event and Heavily Coached conditions. Thus, although CBCA accurately distinguished credible from lightly coached reports by this older group of children, reports of the heavily coached children fooled CBCA evaluation. For Grade 2 children, CBCA did not discriminate between the three conditions. This result raised questions about the applicability of CBCA to the reports of younger children. Results of the other two tests of quantitative and qualitative characteristics indicated that these systems did not aid in discriminating between credible and noncredible reports. The implications of these findings for the empirical validation of CBCA and for the use of this system in making credibility decisions in the forensic context are discussed. At this point in time, the assessment of CBCA is still taking place. Until further testing is completed, CBCA should be viewed as one approach to credibility assessment that has clinical support but limited empirical validation. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

The development and implementation of finite element analysis techniques in the design of press toolingMbavhalelo, M., Oliver, G. January 2009 (has links)
Published Article / Rapid and reliable methods for component development and economic manufacturing layout are today crucial factors for the application of press tooling techniques in mass production of automotive industry components. The use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based forming simulation can provide a more detailed insight into the real behaviour of a structure. An LS-DYNA finite element model was developed to analyse the material behaviour during the piercing process of a drainage hole for a shock absorber seat. The simulation is intended to simulate tearing that occurs during the manufacturing stage. Once the current punch produces the observed tearing we can modify the punch to eliminate the problem.

The Structured Employment Interview: An Examination of Construct and Criterion ValidityLevine, Anne B. January 2006 (has links)
This study extends the literature on interview validity by attempting to create a structured employment interview with both construct- and criterion-related validity. For this study, a situational interview was developed with the specific purpose of enhancing the interview's construct validity while retaining the interview's predictive power. To enhance the construct validity, two guidelines were applied to the creation of the interview based on previous research in interview and assessment center literature limit the number of applicant characteristics to be rated to 3; and (2) ensure that the dimensions to be measured are conceptually distinct. Based on these two guidelines, three constructs were chosen for assessment of real estate sales agents extraversion, proactive personality and customer orientation. The critical incident technique was used to develop six interview items. To test the construct validity of the interview, the six items were correlated with other measures, specifically, self-report questionnaires and managers' ratings, of extraversion, proactivity and customer orientation. Correlations were weak, at best (rs ranged from -.06 to .25). To test the predictive validity of the interview, the six items were correlated with both objective and subjective measures of performance. Predictive validities were stronger, ranging from .23 to .30. These findings are consistent with previous research on employment interviews which have found that although the predictive validity of the interview is strong, the construct validity is very weak, leaving researchers to wonder what it is that the interview is actually measuring. Possible explanations for these findings are offered, and the implications of these findings are discussed.

Determining recording time of digital soundrecordings using the ENF criterion / Tidsbestämning av digitala ljudinspelningar med hjälp av ENF-kriterietAndersson, Fredrik January 2009 (has links)

Determining the recording time of digital media by using the electric network frequencyKantardjiev, Alex January 2011 (has links)
Authentication of recordings is an important task in forensic sciences. When processing audio or video material, some tasks might be related to determining whether or not the material has been edited or falsified in any way, or in other cases, to determine at what point in time a recording was made. The transition from analog to digital media has provided a solid foundation for the process of determining recording times by using the frequency variations in the electrical network, when interferences from the network are present in the investigated recording. This thesis describes a method of how to record the frequency of the electrical network in order to establish a reference database, evaluates several methods to isolate and extract the disturbances from recordings as well as suggests methods of how to search the database in order to locate the time of a recording. It is concluded, that each of the methods suggested has both advantages and disadvantages, depending on the state of the examined recording. Tests are also conducted in order to determine, whether or not, battery powered recording equipment is susceptible to recording the disturbances, or harmonics thereof, from electromagnetic fields near conducting wire or other electrical equipment. It is found that the fundamental frequency disturbance is usually difficult to detect, but also, that it is not uncommon that harmonics can be present in the recordings from the battery powered devices tested. Included in this thesis are also the results of the development of a graphical user interface for Matlab, where some of the features include the possibility to filter sound files, estimate frequency patterns and perform database searches, as well as the evaluation of a frequency analysis software. Both intended to serve as an aid for locating and extracting the disturbances of interest, as well as for finding the corresponding frequency patterns in the established database.

How top management team form and its effectiveness:the chaxu geju management behavior viewHsu, Wen-chung 12 August 2005 (has links)
We tested the hypothesis that top management team¡¦s effectiveness and Chaxu Geju have an positive effect relationship. Our analysis was base on data from 650 schools , including 120 pairs of team leaders and their team's members .To survey whether the leader's Chaxu Geju which is Guanxi , loyalty and talent has positive effect on team's effectiveness. The first result shows, Team leader will divide team members into insiders and outsiders according to Chaxu Geju . Finally, indicated leader¡¦s criterion of categorization didn¡¦t significant affect the top management team¡¦s effectiveness. The two group insiders and outsiders are the same .
