Turessi, Fabio Donizete [UNIFESP] January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-12-06T23:45:48Z (GMT). The developing of the concept of health and scientific evidence to extrapolate the consequences of localized diseases of the oral cavity, changed or should change the mode of action of the dentist that is still limited to occasional curative interventions. The prevalence of in flammatory diseases (such as gingival ) is higher in underdeveloped or developing countries, where oral health does not include satisfactorily the population assisted . The associatio n of chronic inflammat ory periodontal structures (gingival ) with atherosclerotic vascular disease, for example, predisposes patients to increased risk of cardiovascular events responsible for most deaths in the adult population. One factor that drives spe cial attention on prevention, protection and restoration of oral health deals with dai ly care . H owever, among the main obstacles to the creation and maintenance of these habicts , two stand out: the health education and the cost proportionately high of effe ctive and efficient tools for oral hygiene. A toothbrush with lower cost s , together with educational programs specifically designed, can contribute to the improvement of primary oral health of our population .

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of the use and the consumption pattern of oral health preventive supplies by the population of two cities with similar demographic characteristics and different oral health status, as well as factors associated with their use. The study was individual, observational and analytical sectional with comparison group. The survey took place in the cities of Natal/RN and Florian?polis/SC. The sample consisted of 963 individuals, divided between both cities, from the age of 20 and up. The sampling was by quotas and the collection was through questionnaires structured with information of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, usage habits and consumption of oral health preventive supplies and possible associated factors. The interviews took place in busy locations in both cities. The data were submitted to chi-square statistical test and logistic regression type stepwise forward. For all tests it was adopted a 5% significance level. The use of toothbrush and dentifrice was made by 100% of the sample and about 70.0% use them 3 or more times daily. The use of dental floss was 66.0% for Natal/RN and 81.5% for Florian?polis/SC. And the use of mouthwash was 52.9% and 59.3% for Natal/RN and Florian?polis/SC, respectively. The predominant frequency of use in both cases was once a day. The results of Florian?polis/SC were better in the categories socioeconomic status and hygiene habits. There was an association between the use of dental floss and the fact that individuals resided in Florian?polis/SC, were female, were married, were in the age group of 40-49 years, had a higher level of education, attended private dental service, performed oral hygiene more times daily and did not report toothache in the previous six months. The variables associated with the use of mouthwash were predominantly those representing the socio-economic condition of the individual, those in better condition were the ones who most used this product. In conclusion, the socioeconomic status represented by yhe access to health services and the education level, were the main determinants of the oral hygiene habits of the sample.

This study evaluated the level of contamination of toothbrushes from 54 students of 2nd, 5nd and 9nd period of the undergraduate course in Dentistry, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Juiz de Fora, Brazil, with respect to hygiene and storage, and the effectiveness of the aqueous solution of chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% spray for decontamination of toothbrushes. The study was divided into two phases, with duration of 15 days each. In Step 1, participants were divided into two groups (G1 and G2), where each received a toothbrush and a dental cream. In step 2, the G1 has been called experimental and G2, control: in experimental received toothbrushes and dental cream, a spray bottle with basic aqueous solution, composed of distilled water and sweetener stevia added with chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12%. In the control, each participant received the same set and spray bottle containing basic solution. Received protocol guidelines for use, storage and disinfection of toothbrushes. Before starting the study and after two steps, the students answered questionnaires with data on their hygiene and storage of the toothbrushes. The toothbrushes were returned in sealed envelopes to the researcher for the microbiological test, performed at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Institute of Biological Sciences of UFJF. The toothbrushes were placed in sterile test tubes identified, containing 7mL of sterile saline 0.9% and agitated in the Vortex®, for 20s. With a calibrated loop was collected 1μL this solution and spreaded by exhaustion in the culture medium CHROMagar Orientation®. The plates were incubated at 35,5°C under aerobic conditions, for 24h. Data were subjected to statistics. The results of this study showed that an increased rate of contamination of toothbrushes of 2nd period students compared to the students of the 5th and the 9th periods. There was a marked reduction in contamination levels in step 2 and was statistically significant for 2nd and 9th periods. In the 5th period was a reduction, but without statistical significance, which can be explained by the reported occurrence of contact for their toothbrushes with other brushes in the storage location. Between groups, the reduction in contamination was statistically significant between G1 and experimental. However, a decrease was observed between G2 and the control, showing that hygiene and proper storage are sufficient to reduce the contamination of toothbrushes.
