Among the mosquitoes Culex quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 (Diptera, Culicidae) shows high synanthropy and consequently high public health relevance, like vector of various pathogens such as Oropouche virus, nematodes such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Dirofilaria immitis, and the nuisance they cause to man in urban areas. The female of C. quinquefasciatus oviposit in breeding high in organic material such as sewage, drains, ditches open, with few natural enemies, as a result the high population of these individuals in urban areas. In order to evaluate the influence of the density of larvae of C. quinquefasciatus, experiments were performed with a fixed availability diet (100mg/L-1) and proportional diet to the number of larvae (1.9mg/larvae/L). The results show that the larval period of C. quinquefasciatus varies from 16.81 to 27.36 days to a density of 200 and 1250 larvae, respectively on restricted diet treatment. In the treatment with proportional diet showed no change in the larval period. Larval density with restricted diet and proportional diet did not affect the pupal period. The period of adult emergence was inversely proportional to larval density, ranging from 17 to 32 days, from the larvae hatching in restricted diet and 6-7 days on proportionate diet. On treatment with restricted diet larval viability varied inversely with density, to proportional diet did not show influence in the larval viability, while the pupal viability was not affected by density. The density of larvae, with or without food restriction did not affect the size of the adults, presenting only size difference between the sexes, with females larger than males, regardless of treatment. The sex ratio was influenced by the density of larvae when available restricted diet, varying inversely proportional. The result of food competition in the larva stage reduces the sex ratio without compromising the size of the adults, which may suggest that the next generation the reproductive performance will be maintained, but with population decrease due to reducing the number of females.

Effects of Age and Thermal Acclimation on the Selected Temperature and Thermal Resistance of Culcid and Simuliid Larvae (Diptera)

Thomas, Anthony 05 1900 (has links)
Black-fly larvae, and mosquito larvae and pupae, are shown to select certain temperature ranges when given a choice in a linear gradient. Larval age has little effect on the temperature selected, but pupae are tolerant of higher temperatures than larvae. The significance of this observation is discussed. The temperature selected is affected by the previous thermal history of the insect, although acclimation to the ambient temperature may be rapid. The final selected temperature of fourth-instar Aedes aegypti larvae was determined. Rearing temperature has a profound effect on the thermal resistance of Aedes aegypti exposed to high temperatures. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)
