Shinnyoen and the transmission of Japanese new religions abroadSakashita, Jay January 1998 (has links)
This study examines the ways and the extent to which Japanese new religions that seek to attain an international presence adapt and alter their techniques of proselytism in moving from one culture to another, and the ways in which their development varies in non-Japanese cultures. In particular I focus on Shinnyoen, one of the largest new religions in Japan, which has achieved a foothold in Hawaii and other areas with large Japanese immigrant populations, but which has also begun to develop in Europe and other parts of Asia. Currently, movements such as Shinnyoen are in their infancy in Britain, although they have already begun to establish a presence and have developed to some degree beyond the Japanese population. Accordingly, the activities of such religious groups and the ways in which they seek to appeal to and attract non-Japanese followers form a highly appropriate topic for research. This study will examine Shinnyoen and its proselytizing campaign in three diverse locations - the UK, Hawaii, and Singapore - in order to glean a clear account of the dynamics involved in the proselytizing activities of Japanese new religions overseas. The ethos of Japanese new religious movements and the conditions (social, organizational, cultural) conducive for dissemination abroad, especially among local populations, are issues explored in the process. The extent to which these patterns differ at the various locations will also be examined in order to determine whether Shinnyoen attracts, and targets, the same type of people in Britain as it does in Singapore and Hawaii. What will emerge at the conclusion of this study is a clearer picture of the challenges Japanese new religions face in their efforts to expand overseas and flourish in foreign soil and the necessary provisions they must possess in their praxis and organizational structure if they are to meet these challenges.

Previous issue date: 2013-09-26 / Outras / The present research examined the socio-cultural impacton the identity of the people in the indigenous community Taurepang Sorocaima I, where live approximately 43 families, totaling 207 individuals. The community is located on the margins of BR 174, far northern Brazil near the Brazil border and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, with land access. It was noted the socio-cultural impact in the form of constant changes of daily life in that, although these transformations take place, the identity remains alive and present in the present day, represented by the symbols and signs in life of this people.
The study and nature of this research was qualitative with the methodological procedures of semi-structured interviews, using participant observation. As instrumental, used the questionnaire. The result of this investigation came the Church and the school as two major factors that impacted directly on everyday life of the people, which was concerned with maintaining the rules and norms of Adventist doctrine in society Taurepang, in the name of God. There was the extent to which the identity of the people Taurepang continues to render on sociocultural impacts of processes, in particular by means of religion and education. / A presente pesquisa analisou o impacto socioculturalna identidade do povo Taurepang na Comunidade Indígena Sorocaima I, onde vivem aproximadamente 43 famílias, totalizando 207 indivíduos. A comunidade está localizada à margem da BR 174, extremo norte do Brasil e próximo à fronteira Brasil-República Bolivariana da Venezuela, com acesso via terrestre. Constatou-se o impacto sociocultural sob a forma de constantes mudanças do cotidiano em que, embora essas transformações se realizem, a identidade semantém viva e presente nos dias atuais, representadas pelos símbolos e signos na vida deste povo.
O estudo desta pesquisa de natureza foi qualitativa,com os procedimentos metodológicos de entrevistas semiestruturadas, usando a observação participante. Como instrumental, usou-se o questionário. No resultado dessa investigação surgiram a igreja e a escola como dois grandes fatores que impactaram diretamente na vida cotidiana do povo, que se mostrou preocupado em manter as regras e as normas da doutrina adventista na sociedade Taurepang, em nome de Deus. Verificou-se até que ponto a identidade do povo Taurepang continua a se processar diante de impactos socioculturais dos processos, sobretudo por meio da religião e da escolarização.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-03 / The present study takes an approach of scientific analysis of the relation between
religion and violence in Brazil, considering as religious intolerance several behaviors
aggressive to the manifestation of faith of the Other. Tolerance and intolerance are
studied in the conception of science. The general objective investigates the
characteristics of religious intolerance through socio-cultural formation. The specific
objectives seek to measure the importance of cultural identity in the religious
conception; To approach the historical events of the Portuguese, Indian and African
religious traditions, showing their religious influences in the violent practices against
the Other, in the present time; Interpret the Brazilian religious syncretism; To focus on
the practice of religious intolerance tending to develop violence. It is observed that
religious violence has been marked in all cultures, presenting expiatory victims,
extremists of fundamentalists, among others. Intolerance, prejudice and discrimination
can be pointed out in many expressions and actions of people or groups who say they
are based on dogmas. Persecutions, demonization of rituals and other are seen as
signs of intolerance. Religious intolerance has repercussions in different social and
religious segments, being revealed in the events that promote it. Overcoming
intolerance is a sign that there is the promotion of tolerance. Religious faith is free,
protected by laws. Diversities and social, cultural and religious divergences are
examples of democracy and freedom of expression in the country. / O presente estudo faz uma abordagem de análise científica da relação entre religião
e violência no Brasil, considerando como intolerância religiosa diversos
comportamentos agressivos à manifestação de fé do Outro. A tolerância e a
intolerância são estudadas na concepção da ciência. O objetivo geral investiga as
características da intolerância religiosa pela formação sociocultural. Os objetivos
específicos buscam dimensionar a importância da identidade cultural na concepção
religiosa; abordar os acontecimentos históricos das tradições religiosas portuguesas,
indígenas e africanas, mostrando suas influências de religiosidade nas práticas
violentas contra o Outro, na atualidade; interpretar o sincretismo religioso brasileiro;
enfocar a prática de intolerância religiosa tendente a desenvolver a violência.
Constata-se que a violência religiosa tem sido marcante em todas as culturas,
apresentando vítimas expiatórias, extremismos de fundamentalistas, entre outros. A
intolerância, o preconceito e a discriminação podem ser apontados em muitas
expressões e ações de pessoas ou grupos que dizem estar embasados em dogmas.
As perseguições, a demonização de rituais e outra são vistos como sinais de
intolerância. A intolerância religiosa repercute em diferentes seguimentos sociais e
religiosos, sendo revelada nos acontecimentos que a promove. Superar a intolerância
é sinal de que há a promoção da tolerância. A fé religiosa é livre, resguardada por leis.
As diversidades e as divergências sociais, culturais e religiosas são mostras da
democracia e da liberdade de expressão no País.

practiced in the northern region of Brazil and how it is expressed through the most
diverse cultural manifestations typical of the region, examining cultural products and
analyzing how religious education is included in Formal school in Pará, with greater
emphasis on the city of Santarém. It aims to demonstrate through bibliographic
research the current framework of Religious Education in the municipality of
Santarém, through an analysis of information provided by the Municipal Education
Department and other sources that deal with the subject. The hypothesis that guides
the research concerns the understanding that Religious Education is a discipline of
great relevance for the formation of the citizen, but faces many challenges to become
a study area, especially due to the diversity and religious pluralism present in our
country , With more emphasis in the North region, where the city of Santarém is
located and where there are strong influences of the indigenous culture. As far as the
research methodology is concerned, the information explored serves as a basis for
its easy handling, thus seeking to develop methods that will facilitate the conclusion
of this academic work. For that, the bibliographic research was applied from the
records available during the work, printed documents such as books, articles, theses,
and others were used. / A presente pesquisa aborda a questão de como a cultura influencia as religiões
praticadas na região Norte do Brasil e como ela se expressa por meio das mais
diversas manifestações culturais típicas da região, examinando os produtos culturais
e analisando como se dá a inclusão do ensino religioso na escola formal do Pará,
com maior ênfase para a cidade de Santarém. Tem como objetivo demonstrar por
meio de pesquisa bibliográfica o quadro atual do Ensino Religioso no município de
Santarém, por meio de análise de informações disponibilizadas pela Secretaria
Municipal da Educação e outras fontes que tratam do assunto. A hipótese que
orienta a pesquisa diz respeito ao entendimento de que o Ensino Religioso é uma
disciplina de grande relevância para a formação do cidadão, mas enfrenta muitos
desafios para se constituir como área de estudo, especialmente devido à diversidade
e pluralismo religioso presente em nosso país, com mais ênfase na região Norte,
onde está localizada a cidade de Santarém e onde existem fortes influências da
cultura indígena. Quanto à metodologia de pesquisa, as informações exploradas
servem como base para o fácil manuseio da mesma, buscando assim desenvolver
métodos que venham facilitar a conclusão desse trabalho acadêmico. Para tanto foi
aplicada a pesquisa bibliográfica apartir dos registros disponíveis no decorrer do
trabalho, foi usado documentos impressos, como livros, artigos, teses, entre outros.

manifestation inside the conception of the world of candomblé. The importance of the
body universe, its legitimacy and alterity as a symbolic language ruled in ritual
performances of candomblé: initiation, anguish and orixá dance, retaking the
involvement of body inside of sacred areas.
The study is ruled in a cultural anthropology that settles parameters that justify function,
intention and meaning of acts and gestual behaviours. Through concepts proportioned
by social sciences as culture, symbol, rite, myth, dance, tradition and religion, help us in
the comprehension of building of human being as a social product. / O objeto da presente dissertação é o corpo como espaço e possibilidade de
manifestação religiosa dentro da cosmovisão do candomblé. A imensa importância,
legitimidade e alteridade do universo corporal é vista como linguagem simbólica
pautada nas práticas ritualísticas do candomblé, sendo a iniciação, o transe e a dança
dos orixás, os momentos específicos utilizados para nossa análise, compreendendo o
corpo como espaço de manifestação do sagrado.
O estudo está pautado na antropologia cultural estabelecendo parâmetros que
justificam função, intenção e significado de atos e comportamentos gestuais. Através de
conceitos proporcionados pelas ciências sociais como cultura, símbolo, rito, mito,
dança, tradição e religião, estes nos auxiliam na compreensão da construção do ser
humano como artefato social.

Religion as a Chinese Cultural Component: Culture in the Chinese Taoist Association and Confucius InstituteAbercrombie, John D 01 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of the cultural discourse on the indigenous religious traditions of China and their place within an officially sanctioned construction of Chinese culture. It starts by examining the concept of culture as it developed in the modern era, its place within the construction of national identities, and the marginalizing effects this has on certain members of national populations. Next it turns to the development of the cultural discourse within China from the mid-1800s to the Cultural Revolution, highlighting the social and legal transformations as they restricted and reframed the practice and articulation of religious traditions in mainland China. Following these early articulations of a cultural discourse in China and the subjugation of religious traditions to secular standards of legitimation, it examines the official presentations and governmentally sanctioned forms of the Daoist tradition in post-Mao China during a “cultural revival,” through an analysis of official publications and online presentations. Finally, it examines the way teachers and administrators package Chinese culture for a foreign audience through the Confucius Institute.
This thesis argues that, despite greater freedom to explore indigenous traditions previously written off as “superstitious” within the cultural revival of contemporary China, the official cultural discourse in China continues to operate within the parameters of a modern cultural identity that marginalizes ritualistic forms of religion, allowing these religious forms to survive in an official space only as exotic images, sanitized and secularized activities, or ethical ideals.

The world is a fractured place, faceted and fascinating in variety but broken in strife. Artist Gerhard Richter, said “Art is the highest form of hope” and the thinker Martin Heidegger said that art is a “happening of truth”. Marc Chagall hoped his art connected with people’s lives and sufferings and would become infused with prayer for redemption. How does visual art (and thinking theoretically and theologically about art) contribute toward hope and truth that bring the fragments of society into personal and communal connection? This is a practice-based (or studio-led) thesis in stained glass making at the juncture of the interdisciplinary fields of visual culture and religion. Making the visual art of stained glass windows involves collaborating, selecting, breaking, combining – processes that embody the unifying of disparate pieces. There are three projects and three chapters included in this research that work cohesively to show how visual art can facilitate a shift in us to see with compassion that guides our actions to care, and the word “EidenSight” is introduced to give vocabulary to this. Research draws primarily from reflections on collaborative studio work, visual art and visual artists, aesthetic theory (especially of Heidegger’s essay “The Origin of the Work of Art”) and thinking theologically through these sources. Stained glass has been a profession of work and a profession of faith; here the ancient art is created for contemporary places and raises questions theoretically and theologically and identifies themes that contribute to an understanding of how art affects us. Over the centuries, stained glass has contributed to architecture, art history, and theological aesthetics, as well as viewers’ personal and social experiences, from ecclesial settings to public spaces. This research contributes three commissioned site-specific stained glass installations (two in the US and one for the University of Stirling’s Art Collection) that lead the written thesis which is embedded full of images and has a correlating website: www.eidensite.weebly.com. The results are visual and verbal: requirements for the practice-based thesis include a heavily documented practical element in correlation with a shorter written component (30-80,000 words). Within the limits of these parameters, this research offers completed stained glass windows and a written thesis that includes insights from those projects, plus three chapters on: the material of glass, the space of the window, and the implications of being stained and a main conclusion that ties those elements together contributing to the overall thesis question: can art help us see with compassion that leads to care. Three institutions now have an original work of art substantiated by written theory, and the submitted thesis is substantiated by works of art viewable on different continents.
