Från ett socialt problem till kult : En studie av raggarkulturen förr och nu

Andersson, Kerstin, Danfort, Annelie January 2009 (has links)

Youth culture and social problems associated with youth groups have existed for decades. We have chosen an explorative case study design to highlight young people's revolt against parents and society and how society has dealt with social problems of youth and how those were perceived. “Raggare” were considered a major social problem in society. The material in the study comes from eight qualitative interviews and literature of previous research of the current youth culture. The material also comes from a document study, which shows the social problems in connection with the youth cultures celebration of the midsummer festival in Öland. We have analyzed and clarified the image of “Raggare” past and present and found mechanisms that changed the “Raggare” culture from being a major social problem to the accepted as a pastime today. Our theoretical framework builds on previous research of the current youth culture, subcultures, deviant, symbols and symbolic interaktionism. We assume that theorist Zygmunt Baumans discussion of "we" and "them", Stanley Cohens term "moral panic" and Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective reflect our study in an informative approach.

Cemetery as a Place of Cultural Communication

Li, Charlotte 20 March 2012 (has links)
Cemeteries serve as repositories of history and memories of the local community, as well as afford the living population an opportunity to connect and learn about a culture’s past. Accordingly, the cemetery as a place and the rituals associated with death and remembrance that it holds, not only communicate and express the ideals of a collective identity, but also undergo modifications with time and geography. Through the study of burial rituals and funerary traditions of the multicultural community in the City of Richmond in British Columbia, this thesis seeks unifying qualities within the diversity of practices that will offer strategies for the design of ritual spaces that not only communicate the cultural identity within each community, but also serve as a place in which new ritual practices are born and integrated for the greater community of Richmond.

Managing within the challenges & tensions facing the 21st Century UK NHS managers : NHS managers' perceptions of their public image & the implications for their self and work identity

Merali, Faruk January 2014 (has links)
The UK NHS which is the largest organisation in Europe provides high quality healthcare free at the point of delivery to all its citizens. NHS managers play an instrumental role within it as they are expected to implement the various government led reforms designed to make the NHS an increasingly efficient, effective and accountable organisation. This study is concerned with examining the NHS managerial culture in the context of the various challenges and tensions facing the 21st century NHS managers. The study explores the NHS managers' core values with a view to investigating the relative strength of the managers' commitment towards altruistic based values befitting the NHS ethos. Furthermore given that it is widely recognised that the NHS managers believe the public hold a generally negative view of them, this study also develops an understanding of the implications of the NHS managers' negative perceived public image for their self and work identity. The importance of how managers perceive their self and work identity and how they believe they are perceived by others has implications for their work performance, organisational commitment and satisfaction. Through a qualitative based research design the study draws upon semi-structured interviews with twenty healthcare managers working in the public and private sectors within London and explores their views, perceptions and experiences in relation to the above issues. The interviewees consisted of healthcare managers working in an Acute Care NHS Trust and for comparative reasons also included managers who worked in a large private sector hospital. The comparative interviews were useful in determining the extent to which the key issues central to this study were unique to the NHS managerial culture or whether they were equally pertinent to the wider healthcare managerial sector. The main theoretical framework underpinning this study is derived from and is relevant to Organisation Culture, New Institutional Theory, Self and Work Identity Theory and Corporate Social Responsibility. These relatively disparate fields of study are drawn upon in an integrated manner to explore and discuss the findings as they prove useful in developing a more holistic and deeper understanding of the key issues central to this study. The study findings demonstrate that the majority of NHS managers had actively sought the opportunity to work in a caring based profession such as the NHS because it was underpinned by altruistic based values thereby demonstrating a high level of commitment to these values. Unlike the private healthcare managers, all the NHS managers interviewed reported that they believed the public viewed them negatively and for many of the NHS managers this caused tensions in relation to their self and work identity. Half of the NHS managers, regardless of whether they came from clinical or non-clinical backgrounds, reported emotions of demoralisation, frustration, irritation and anger as a result of this negative perceived public image. These findings provide unique and hitherto unexplored insights into the challenges and tensions facing NHS managers. Possible mitigating strategies and potential policy implications are explored in this thesis.

Konstrukce identity v emocionální kultuře / Constuction of Identity in the Emotional Culture

Prýmková, Karolína January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis Construstion of Identity in the Emotional Culture deals with possible changes in the construction of identity of man after the fall of the millenium. The thesis stems from Eva Illouz's description of society which states that our present society is unprecedently emotional and rational at the same time. The goal of this thesis is to advocate the intitial statement, that in this organization of society the main source for construction of identity is no longer the consumption of material goods as it put notable social theorists since the second half of the twentienth century. I do not state that this remarkable era is fully over now, but I would like to point out, that consumption of material goods is loosing its strength in the process of identity construction due to the overall increasing living standards and mainly due to the fragmentarization of lifestyles. Considering the unprecedently high level of penetration of our society with emotion I consider them to be the new source of identity creation.

The immigration wave from the late nineteenth century became significantly Latin from the second half of the twentieth century, when thousands of Spanish-speaking immigrants arrived here looking for new and fresh opportunities, coming from multiple dictatorships that ravaged the continent, particularly in the Southern Cone. The Chilean immigrants were among the first to reach this metropolis, bringing a diverse and copious Chilean cultural background. Regarding to other immigrants who settled here with posterity, it was obviously clear the arrival of the marks, the evidence of its presence in this multiple cultured São Paulo. Religiosity as manifestations of culture, memory and identity is one of the last migratory habits that one group leaves, given, to be ingrained customs and practices inherent in its conformation. The manifestations of these religious practices suffer reinterpretation, linguistic and performing adjustments, however, devotion remains constant and is denoted and cyclically in the environment where it operates. This dissertation aims at studying the continuity and silences of these Chilean immigrants to São Paulo between 1973 and 2013 as much as their cultural and gastronomic expressions summarized in "Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen" compendium of devotion and identity aspects in its redefinition / São Paulo, cidade e estado, passaram por um intenso e profuso processo imigratório resultado do qual, se produz uma diversidade cultural plena de riqueza e variedade.

Transformation And `europeanization`of Greek Political Culture: The Case Of Political Parties Between 1974-2000

Alkan, Hulya 01 April 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyses the &lsquo / dualistic&rsquo / structure of Greek political culture formed by traditionalist and modernist wings in a historical context by concentrating on post-1974 era. The dissolution of the dictatorship in 1974 constituted a turning point both for Greek politics and Greek political culture. In this point, political parties played the key role in the process of transition and consolidation of democracy and reshaping Greek political culture. Accession into the EC was another historical step for Greek politics and political culture. Deepening of integration with the EC (EU) and Europeanization process has profoundly affected socio-political, economic structure and institutional modernization of Greece. Europeanization of Greece reformulated the hegemony struggle between traditionalist and modernist wings in favor of the latter. Especially, coming to power of Simitis with a pro-European understanding and &lsquo / modernization&rsquo / discourse reinforced the hegemony of modernist wing over the traditionalist one.
