Despite the fact that there has been an enormous amount of jades excavated from the Western Han tombs of Chu Princes, Xuzhou in Jiangsu province, little scholarly literature has been focused on these artefacts. Based on archaeological findings, this thesis selects some significant jade objects as the focus of attention, including jade pendants, jade vessels, jade weapons, jade suites and other burial jades. As the role and value of jade is varied in the hierarchy of material within different cultural and historical context, the changes in its functions and meanings, to some extent reflects the changes in politics, economy, and society. Through tracing their origins, the identity of the owners and examining the changes in material and society, this study attempts to reveal the cultural and social value embedded in these objects, and in doing so to reconstruct the changes in material concepts and aesthetic ideologies in the Han periods. / On the basis of the achievements have hitherto in Han jade study, the present study is expected to shed light on our understanding of tomb culture and its relation to the society from a broader and more comprehensive perspective. Paleoethnobotany of Kilgii Gwaay: a 10,700 year old Ancestral Haida Archaeological Wet SiteCohen, Jenny Micheal 03 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a case study using paleoethnobotanical analysis of Kilgii Gwaay, a 10,700-year-old wet site in southern Haida Gwaii to explore the use of plants by ancestral Haida. The research investigated questions of early Holocene wood artifact technologies and other plant use before the large-scale arrival of western redcedar (Thuja plicata), a cultural keystone species for Haida in more recent times. The project relied on small-scale excavations and sampling from two main areas of the site: a hearth complex and an activity area at the edge of a paleopond. The archaeobotanical assemblage from these two areas yielded 23 plant taxa representing 14 families in the form of wood, charcoal, seeds, and additional plant macrofossils. A salmonberry and elderberry processing area suggests a seasonal summer occupation. Hemlock wedges and split spruce wood and roots show evidence for wood-splitting technology. The assemblage demonstrates potential for site interpretation based on archaeobotanical remains for the Northwest Coast of North America and highlights the importance of these otherwise relatively unknown plant resources from this early time period. / Graduate / cohenjenny2@gmail.com

The clergy and print in eighteenth-century England, c. 1714-1750Latham, Jamie Marc January 2018 (has links)
In much of the historiography surrounding print culture and the book trade, the worldliness of print remains a point of common emphasis. Indeed, many influential studies either assume or actively present the history of print as part of a broader ‘secularization thesis’. Recently, however, historians have challenged these narratives, recognizing the central role of religious print as a driver of growth within the book trade and discussion within the nascent ‘public sphere’. Yet the scholarship into ‘religion and the book’ remains fragmentary, focused on individual genres or persons, with no unified monograph or standard reference work yet to emerge. This dissertation addresses some of the barriers to synopsis by investigating the long-term print output of the largest social and professional group engaged in evangelizing Christianity to the public: the clergy of the Church of England. By focusing on the clergy, this dissertation evades the usual narrow focus on genre. In the past, book-historical and bibliographic studies have relied heavily on a priori classification schemes to study the market for print. While sufficient in the context of relatively well-defined genre categories, such as printed sermons, the validity of these classification schemes breaks down at the wider level, for example, under the conceptual burden of defining the highly fluid and wide-ranging category of ‘religious works’. This dissertation begins to remedy such problems by modelling the print output of a large population of authors who had the strongest stake in evangelizing Christianity to the public through print. It utilizes the latest techniques in the field of digital humanities and bibliometrics to create a representative sample of the print output of the Anglican clergy over the ‘long’ eighteenth-century (here 1660-1800). Based on statistical trends, the thesis identifies a crucial period in the history of clerical print culture, the first four decades of the Hanoverian regime. The period is explored in detail through three subsequent case studies. By combining both traditional and digital methods, therefore, the dissertation explores clerical publishing as a phenomenon subject to evolution and change at both the macro and micro level. The first chapter provides an overarching statistical study of clerical publishing between 1660 and 1800. By combining data from two bibliographical datasets, The English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC), and the prosopographical resource, The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCED), I extract and analyse a dataset of clerical works consisting of almost 35,000 bibliographic records. The remaining chapters approach the thesis topic through primary research-based case studies using both print and manuscript sources. The case studies were selected from the period identified in the preceding statistical analysis as a crucial transitional moment in the history of clerical publishing culture, c.1714 to 1750. These case studies form chapters 2, 3, and 4, each of which explore a different aspect of a network of authors who worked under the direction of the bishop of London, Edmund Gibson (1723-1748), during the era of Whig hegemony under Sir Robert Walpole. Finally, an appendix outlines the methodology used in chapter 1 to extract the sample of clerical printed works from the ESTC. Overall, the thesis demonstrates the profound influence of the clergy on the development of English print in the hand-press period. It thus forms both a historiographic intervention against the secularization thesis still implicit in discussions of print culture and the book trade, as well as providing a cautionary critique of the revisionism which has shaped recent investigations into the Church of England.

sobre doação de livros às escolas públicas, documento manuscrito que compõe o acervo do
Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia, e contém os títulos dos manuais didáticos doados às
escolas públicas da Bahia, entre os anos de 1837 e 1868. A coleção de Correspondências
sobre doação de livros às escolas públicas do Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia é bastante
rica e diversa. A pesquisa além de possibilitar o acesso aos títulos dos manuais que
circulavam nas escolas naquele momento histórico e que, consequentemente, concorriam para
a aprendizagem e difusão da escrita, contribui para o enriquecimento dos estudos voltados
para a compreensão da consolidação e desenvolvimento da instrução pública baiana nesse
período. Objetiva-se, portanto, desvelar aspectos importantes do cenário da instrução pública
baiana oitocentista, a partir da construção de uma narrativa que apresente a política de doação
de livros às escolas públicas de acordo com as informações reveladas na Coleção de
correspondências sobre doação. Para isso, são observados os princípios e procedimentos do
paradigma indiciário, que é um método heurístico focado nos detalhes, nas pistas que são
deixadas, nesse caso, no documento que á principal fonte de investigação. O referencial
teórico é pautado na relação entre a História Cultural em diálogo com a História da Educação
e a História da Cultura Escrita. Pode-se caracterizar a presente pesquisa como histórica, já que
investiga uma mudança ocorrida na sociedade, ainda que visando à investigação de assuntos
educacionais. / ABSTRACT This study is based on the collection of data from the Correspondências recebidas sobre
doação de livros às escolas públicas, handwritten document which belongs to Arquivo
Público do Estado da Bahia, containing the titles of didactic handbooks donated to the public
schools of Bahia, between 1837 and 1868. The collection of correspondences about donation
of books to the public schools of Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia is very rich and varied.
The research besides granting access to the titles of the manuals that circulated in schools at
that historical period and that, consequently, concurred for the learning and spread of writing,
contributes to the strengthening of the studies towards the comprehension of the consolidation
and development of Bahia public instruction at that time. Therefore, the objective is to unveil
important aspects of the scenario of Bahia public instruction of the nineteenth century, based
on the construction of a narrative that shows the policy of book donation to the public schools
according to the information gathered from the Collection of correspondences about
donation. For this purpose, the principles and proceedings of the indiciary paradigm, heuristic
method focusing the details, clues left, in this case, on the document which is the main source
of the investigation are observed. The theoretical references are based on the relation between
Cultural History in dialog with History of Education and History of Written Culture. It’s
possible to characterize this research as historical, for it investigates a change in society, even
if it aims to investigate education affairs.

La thèse porte sur la mise au jour d'une séquence culturelle continue dans le nord-ouest du Gabon, sur le territoire de la Province de l'Estuaire.<p>Cette séquence démarre avec les traces des derniers chasseurs-collecteurs datées avant 4.000 bp, se poursuit avec la présence des premiers villages avant 2.600 bp, se développe avec l'arrivée des premières populations métallurgistes vers 1.900 bp et se termine un peu après l'arrivée des premiers européens sur la côte Atlantique entre 1471-1475.<p>Ces quelques quatre millénaire d'histoire sont construits autour d'un protocole d’analyse détaillée des poteries, principaux traceurs des ensembles culturels et de leurs échanges.<p>A chaque grande époque culturelle (Néolithique puis Age du Fer), les données de l'estuaire du Gabon sont comparées et enrichies par toutes les autres informations archéologiques compilées au Gabon.<p>Dans le cadre d'une synthèse régionale, toute la documentation relative à la néolithisation en Afrique Centrale du Cameroun à l'Angola est réétudiée en utilisant la même grille d'analyse, et une nouvelle modélisation de l'expansion du système de production villageois est proposée.<p>Enfin, tous les éléments qui portent sur les premières traces de réduction du fer sont repris, critiqués, et une chronologie plus sûre de l'expansion de cette métallurgie est proposée.<p> / Doctorat en philosophie et lettres, Orientation histoire de l'art et archéologie / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Ma thèse se concentre sur la question de la transformation de la pratique du banquet classique face, d’une part, à la nouvelle situation sociopolitique découlant de l’installation des royaumes dits successeurs et de la dissolution des structures politiques classiques ;et d’autre part, face à l’intensification de ce que l’on appelle communément la « christianisation » du monde romain. Mes recherches concernent le monde romain occidental (Gaule, Italie et Espagne) à partir du moment où le discours ascétique oriental se diffuse massivement en occident dans la seconde moitié du IVe siècle, mettant fin à ce que Robert Markus appelle le « christianisme antique ». La question principale de ma thèse concerne le discours chrétien et ascétique qui porte sur les questions alimentaires et les réponses données par les groupes sociaux dont l’usage du banquet classique est suffisamment documenté. En l’occurrence les aristocrates (en ce compris les évêques), les communautés cénobitiques et le mouvement anachorétique. La seconde question abordée dans mes recherches est celle posée par la présence « barbare » et l’image du mangeur barbare en ces siècles de transition socioculturelle. Le terminus ante quem de mes recherches se situe à la fin du VIe siècle, en un monde romain désormais indubitablement transformé.<p><p><p> <p>La mia tesi si incentra sulla questione della trasformazione della pratica classica del banchetto nel confronto, da una parte con la nuova situazione sociale e politica dovuta all’insediamento dei regni post-romani, e, dall’altra, con l’intensificazione della cosiddetta “cristianizzazione” del mondo romano. La tesi riguarda lo spazio romano occidentale (cioè Gallia, Italia, Spagna) a partire dal momento in cui si diffonde la grande moda dell’ascetismo orientale dalla seconda metà del IV secolo. La questione principale della tesi, che occupa i capitoli tre e quattro, riguarda il discorso cristiano e ascetico sull’alimentazione e poi le risposte date dai gruppi sociali il cui uso del banchetto è documentato a sufficienza, in fatti specie gli aristocratici, il mondo monastico, e gli eremiti. I due primi capitoli riguardano, rispettivamente, la pratica del banchetto classico nella tarda antichità e la questione della presenza “barbara” e dell’immagine del mangiatore barbaro in quei secoli. La conclusione della tesi si colloca alla fine del VI secolo, in un momento in cui il mondo romano è indubbiamente trasformato.<p><p><p>My doctoral thesis concentrates on the question of the transformation of the classical banquet through the encounter with, on the one hand, the new sociopolitical situation due to the migration and installation of the new successor kingdoms ;and on the other hand, with the intensification of the Christianization of the Roman world. My research focuses on the Western Roman world (Gaul, Italy and Spain) from the moment in which the eastern ascetic discourse spreads widely in the West in the second half of the 4th century, causing what Robert Markus calls “The end of Ancient Christianity”. The main question of my thesis regards the Christian and ascetic discourse on food practices and the answers given by the social groups who’s uses of the banquet is documented enough. In this case, the aristocrats (within which the bishops), the monastic communities and the hermits. The second question taken into consideration in my thesis is the one presented by the “barbarian” presence and the literary image of the barbarian eater in these centuries of socio cultural transformation.
