The European customs arena : Today and tomorrow

Mattsson, Albin Nils, Wilgotson, Oskar, Åsberg, Gustav Thomas January 2020 (has links)
Customs services are increasing and becoming more important as global and cross-border trade increases. New trade agreements are developing which changes the prerequisites for actors concerned by the customs market. The customs industry is in many cases old-fashioned where customs service providers are making declarations by hand. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding about development of customs services based on the parameters: technology, trade blocs, climate issues and customer requirements. This study is based on a deductive approach where a qualitative method has been used for data collection. The data collection has been done by interviewing people from various companies and organizations with significant knowledge within the customs area. With support of the interviews and theoretical learnings a presumptive future of the customs industry has been developed. The results were constructed by assembling learnings from the interviews and are visualized based on the four parameters. Quality and price are important factors that reflect all the respondents’ answers regarding the customer requirements of the industry. Reputation and the opportunity to cover a larger geographical area are also parameters that the respondents mentioned. In the upcoming years there are demands regarding more data integration and digitalization between customs service providers and companies within the industry. This digitalization might help companies to evaluate and use trade agreements. Environment is a topic that is constantly being noticed in all industries, the customs industry as well. Common to the respondents was that climate issues will generate a future of more national and local nature. We see an increased degree of protectionism according to respondent seven. Block chain is a technology that has received increased attention lately, which leading to the question of whether this is something that customs companies should consider. In the future, blockchain may be worth investing in, but at the moment there are several limitations with the technology.

Design of a University Research Network: Analysis, Selection, and Implementation Planning

Hopper, Anna P 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This report focuses on the design of a university knowledge management system (KMS), and how such a system can provide the framework for students and faculty to partake in, share, and collaborate on research activities. The collaborative environment of a university KMS, or research network, must be established in order for a university to maintain its reputation as a competitive research institution and to develop its faculty and students outside the classroom. A research network may contain a variety of features, some of which include faculty profiles, forums, communication portals, publication links, biographies, faculty keywords, interest areas and contact information. Several web-based systems provide the capabilities required for a well-functioning research network, including creating a customized system in-house. Thus, the existence of various alternatives often leads to great difficulty selecting, designing, and/or customizing a feasible system. The systems engineering process allows a university to evaluate and select the most desirable research network to suit its needs while maintaining decision objectivity. Once a system is selected, the university must integrate the research network into its existing research organization through a structured implementation plan, which includes system implementation schedule, functionality, required resources, and cost analysis. In addition, this report includes a case study performed at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). In this case study, the KMS design and systems engineering process are applied to Cal Poly, in an attempt to satisfy Cal Poly’s need for a robust research network. An implementation plan developed for Cal Poly is presented, as well.

Customer Focussed Technology Selection Using Expert Opinion. Incorporating the 'Voice of the Customer' and Expert Opinion in Technology Selection.

Richardson, David January 2018 (has links)
The application of new technologies into products allows manufacturers to differentiate their products and fulfil customer requirements. A method to assess the impact of technologies on the fulfilment of customer requirements has been investigated in this research. The main focus is the application of advanced technologies, which may be still in the concept phase, to complex systems using automotive engines as case studies. In these systems the customer will not directly interact with the technologies but the technologies are applied to deliver the range of customer requirements individually or collectively. A standard tool, Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) has been adopted to capture the customer requirements. As all the technology combinations cannot be assessed experimentally due to resource limitations, expert opinion has been employed. A questionnaire has been developed to capture the experts’ opinions of the performance of the technologies in a non-linear Likert-type scale. The combination of expert opinion, where the experts are specialists in a range of engineering disciplines, has been considered and analysis methods incorporating opinion weighting have been developed that parallel established expert opinion analysis methods used for subjective probability risk analysis. The analysis methods enabled different technology combinations to be assessed and customer requirements for different target products to be incorporated to provide a route for optimum technology selection to fulfil customer requirements. A pilot study and two case studies were used to investigate the methodology with Customer feedback used to validate the output in one of the case studies. The research has shown that the Customer Focussed Technology Selection framework and methodology developed in this thesis is a new approach to selecting technologies. The case studies have demonstrated it is an effective framework for evaluating the impact of low technology-readiness-level technologies in complex systems on the Customer. The methodology is suitable for application in technology development processes such as the Jaguar Land Rover TCDS process to support the initial technology selection. / Jaguar Land Rover
